The architecture of participation
The architecture of participation
08/17/2004 10:59 AM
Discussions about open source and innovation tend to cluster around
two opposing memes. One says that open source can't innovate; the
other that only open source can innovate. Both are wrong. Sometimes
large, well-funded R&D programs can achieve breakthroughs that
lone geniuses can't. And sometimes the reverse is true. Either way,
the real innovation of the open source movement is the architecture of
participation. It can help turn a good idea -- wherever it came from
-- into a best-quality implementation. Software companies that don't
choose the open source model have to find other ways to recruit and
reward participants. [Full story at
InfoWorld.com] [See also: other
open-source-related items]
The term 'open source' presumes that the essence of software is source
code, and that participation means hacking it. And that's true. But
the emergence of the services model creates modes of participation
that don't require access to source. Back in 2000, Rael Dornfest
introduced the term
open services in order to make that distinction.

Compound Eyes and Optic Flow
Compound Eyes and Optic Flow
01/16/2004 11:01 AMA new Wired
article talks about the increasing interest among researchers in
optic flow as a solution for UAV vision. Optic
flow is the method by which insects with compound eyes, such as
Dragonflies, perceive the world. It allows creatures with tiny brains
and low resolution eyes to gather enough information quickly to
perform
highly accurate navigation even in complex environments. It's worth
noting that optic flow has been a topic
of interest among neural net and software researchers for decades.

Zend in the clowns?
Zend in the clowns?
07/15/2004 07:13 AMPHP has gone from strength to strength over recent years. Reputable
sources have demonstrated both its phenomenal growth rate, and
indicated that it is the most-used Apache module by quite some way,
flooring even the twin titans of mod_perl and OpenSSL in the
popularity stakes (a fact which some people seem quite keen to gloat
about) [1]. Tiobe Software's "Programming Community Index" (a
nominal measure of the popularity of programming languages and
skillsets) ranks PHP as having climbed so far as to be tussling with
Visual Basic over fourth position, only being clearly bettered by the
heavyweights of C, C++ and Java. Along with Perl, Apache, GCC and the
Linux kernel, it is one of the undisputed heavyweight success stories
of Free / Open Source Software. On Tuesday, PHP v.5.0 was finally
unleashed upon the world. What is starkly evident is that, whilst the
developers have spilled blood to facilitate backwards compatibility,
enormous changes have been made, both to the language syntax and its
capability. These changes have implications beyond the world of PHP
itself: They are representative of a certain trend in programming
languages and the advance of technology in general. So do these
changes Promote Hyper-productive Programming, or are they just
Purloining Heinous Piss ? [2]
Zend PHP 5 Goodies
Zend PHP 5 Goodies
04/09/2004 04:08 PMZend have quietly released a veritable treasure trove of PHP 5 tutorials via
their PHP5 InfoCenter:
The Tidy functions look
particularly useful, especially if you are interested in maintaining
clean markup within your PHP applications.
One thing that I would like to see addressed with the full release
of PHP 5 is the
increasing fragmentation of the PHP manual. The single online
manual now covers every version of PHP from 3 upwards, making it increasingly
difficult to use effectively if you are targetting older versions of
PHP. The Python
site maintains archived versions of previous documentation
snapshots, making it easy to refer to the documentation of the
version of the language you are using. With the major changes between
versions 4 and 5 of PHP a similar approach could be highly
beneficial.
