I'm getting a bit of an influx of people coming to plasticbag.org right now because they've just watched the (really rather good) Boom Town episode of Doctor Who and for the first time they've heard the words "Bad Wolf" uttered out loud. And quite reasonably, they now all want to know what the hell is going on... For some reason this little post of mine is high on search results for Bad Wolf. So to try and be helpful, I've added some resources for people looking for a next step. If you know anything that people should know about (or if you have any theories of your own), then you should go and post some comments so that everyone gets to see them.

While I'm on the subject - What an episode! It was well-directed, had lots of intrigue and lots of plot arc advancement. A real character piece which - not for the first time - contained a good bit of flirting and dubious sexual intrigue. Very classy. Very cool. Just a little bit slutty.

New Servers are Up and All is Good

Just a quick note to let you know that the new servers are up and all seems to be good. We haven't added that hardware into the current mix yet -- we'll do it over the weekend / next week. Thanks to Apokalyptik andfor giving me such confidence in their abilities to handle the move that I passed out last night before it was even done. Not a bad tribute to a great SysAdmin.

Just to clarify, I wasn't slacking off or anything, I was adding another new feature to Feedster before the boxes went offline. Still testing it.

Laptops and Servers 02/01/2005 09:44 PM
It just dawned on me that in a desk-side box, heat is not a major problem because it’s got a room to cool it off, usually without too many other computers in it. Laptops, however, are like back-room “mainframe” servers in that heat is a big deal. In the one case you’re worried about your users’ gonads and in the other your HVAC budget, but the problem is the same. Right now, the heat budget is a big concern for the guys at Sun who design our biggest servers. It’s no secret that our throughput computing initiative is partly about this: lower clock speeds, more cores, thread-level parallelism. Am I predicting that laptops with SPARC processors will be leaping off the shelves next quarter? I wouldn’t go that far. But I am smelling converging design spaces.

Home Servers - here we come

Home Servers - here we come 01/22/2004 02:31 AM
The Home Server.

The Home Server

Martin Geddes of Telecopalypse (gotta love that name) saw yesterday's item about home servers and was move to comment.

The key word he adds to the discussion is database. Home PCs will become personal database servers.

This makes sense from an Always-On perspective. After all, what are medical, personal inventory, and security applications doing other than building databases, often huge databases?

But this brings up a key impediment (today) to Always-On, which is the price of software.

As hardware is mass-produced its price declines with Moore's Law. That's not true with software. In fact, complexity (or the ability to handle complexity) increases the price of software.

Look at the price of a Windows server license, for instance, next to the price of a Windows client license. Or look at the price of an Oracle license against that of any client program.

Martin notes in his piece that he's putting his databases onto a Linux PC, and that's a key point.

I've been noodling over the question of whether Windows or Linux will drive Always-On applications for some months. (Windows does have some advantages.) It's the question of price that is determinative. It's not so much that Linux is free as that the cost of Linux solutions move toward free, without the corporate overhead of Windows applications.

What are software companies delivering, after all, once you get the software? They are delivering support. Linux separates the cost of support from the cost of the software, so the initial cost can drive toward zero (especially in volume). That's a key Clue.

An ISP, or telco (is there any difference), or some other company, can earn itself monthly maintenance fees from the Always-On software in your home server, which they can maintain remotely.

I think that's the model for the future. And you won't get it through Windows.

Dana Blankenhorn

[Corante: Moore's Lore]

Marc's comment.....

If I was a betting man - that Linux home server will be running java with struts and Itabis or Turbine, with some coolio basicPortal frameworks - all wrapped inside a social software and personal publishing embrella. All open source.

All designed for talking XML and serving up one's digital lifestyle.

OK - so I was off by 10 years. Maybe building the MediaBar back in 95-96 was too early. maybe spending all my money on research was EXACTLY the right thing to do.

I guess we get to find out now.

PeopleAggregator is back on it's feet and it's sister - WebOutliner - now has accounts. Various pieces of the puzzle - from the Laszlo rich media front-ends, to JahShaka high-end editing tools, to pre-built jukeboxes and photo albums Portal software or knowledge management utilities - are all falling into place. Open standards - like ATOM and FOAF - are taking off. This train is leaving the station.

new advertising tools?.

new advertising tools?

There is news that SeaChange International's "Ad Placement System" (no link on purpose) will allow cable companies to serve more relevant TV advertising based on location and time of day (for video-on-demand content.) There is a part of me that would welcome more relevant ads in general, but the privacy issues are more prominent. How much data does my cable company share with advertisers currently? How much more will they be giving away in the future?

"We are addressing this issue in on-demand television... -- allowing advertising to become customized on a household by household basis to maximize relevance and impact. We want to enable the best possible experience for both the viewer and the advertiser."

Additionally, using "zip code plus four" precision, cable operators can theoretically craft ads that cater to regions and even neighborhoods, SeaChange said. The company offered the example of serving ads for a compact car to "downtown demos," while wealthier "uptown" neighborhoods see an ad for luxury car.

Somehow, I don't think that SeaChange has the best possible experience of the viewer ahead of the advertiser.

Contribute hammering FTP servers? 11/17/2003 06:40 PM

We're having a problem at work with Macromedia Contribute. We host sites for a number of local companies, and one of them wants to use Contribute to update its site. The problem is that whenever Contribute tries to connect to our FTP server, it opens up 30 simultaneous connections, effectively running a denial of service that prevents other clients from logging in during peak times. I've searched the 'net and haven't found any references to this problem; does anyone know anything about the issue? We're running ProFTPD 1.2.9 and the client is using Macromedia Contribute 2.

Asking Mail Servers About Spam?

Asking Mail Servers About Spam? 11/25/2002 10:11 AM
Asking Mail Servers About Spam? I see that Dave's looking for this: A feature for a mail server? What if every mail server supported a new feature. An XML-RPC interface with one entry point. It takes one parameter, a user name and returns a struct containing a boolean. The boolean is true if there is such a user on that machine. It's a struct so more info can be returned later. My email program could send a message to the server each piece of mail came from. Hey you got someone with this name, and do they send out spam? If the answer is no, filter it to the bit bucket.Maybe I'm missing something or it's too early in the morning, but couldn't we ask the servers if they know about this person sending me the spam. I have a feeling that most of the spam I get comes from made-up people. [ Go ] This actually exists already in the SMTP / POP3 spec although it isn't XML-RPC'd of course. One approach to do this is to simulate an SMTP session to the server and then use the RCPT TO smtp command to see if the mail server will accept email for this user. Please note that this idea isn't mine, I got it from Mastering PHP 4.1 which is a pretty kicking book (and where I pretty much stole this sentence from). [ Code ] I don't think that implementing this is all that hard and an XML-RPC interface could be wrapped around it easily enough. It is a damn intriguing idea and one that would be easy enough to implement in a webmail client. One problem with it though is that a lot of email address names aren't true accounts but contain metadata for bounce processing i.e. 23232 @ company.com is generally handled by a bounce routine so any replies to it trigger unsubscribe or something else. Note: This isn't really a problem since if there isn't an account then it's probably spam but it would blow up a lot of list serve like processes. Also there isn't anything to stop spammers from setting up their own mail servers. What it would address is header forging which is a huge problem.

Bobby Fuller< /a> was a Texas based rock and roll singer best known for the immortal rebel anthem "I Fought The Law,". Considered by many to be the heir to Buddy Holly as the king of Texas Rock, he built on Holly's style with songs like the aforementioned "...Law," "Jenny Lee," "Love's Made A Fool Of You," and the 2 1/2 minute masterpiece "Let Her Dance." And then it ended, at age 22, in very weird circumstances. The Google Dance

The Google Dance 06/12/2002 06:22 AM
What is the Google Dance? LinkTree says: Once in a month Google calculates the pagerank of each page and changes the serp (search enigne result pages) for all keywords. The Google Dance is called the time between the start and the end of an update. In that time you get different results on www.google.com, www2.google.com and www3.google.com. Normally the Google Dance took about 4 days. The best time to put new pages online is during the Google-Dance. If you let too much time lapse between the completion of the update, and the publication of new content, you may reduce the amount of new content that will be included in the next update. Woz at WebmasterWorld offers this alternate explanation: They put some pages in, They take some pages out, They calculate the PageRank, Then they shake it all about, They wait until the full moon Then they mix the servers up, Thats what its all about. If you're really interested, WebmasterWorld keeps a chart of Google Update History.

Cory Doctorow: American health insurers are working with obesity researchers to encourage children to play Dance Dance Revolution on home consoles with dance-mats as a way of reversing childhood obesity and the concomitant health costs later in life.
Jones is one of 85 children in an at-home study trying the popular Dance Dance Revolution video game to boost their activity. The study is being done by West Virginia's public employees insurance group in hopes it will lead to better health and lower costs.

Jones lost about 10 pounds by changing his diet. Now, after two weeks playing the game, he has lost another 10.

The game takes place on a 5 meter cushioned playfield suitable for martial arts and acrobatics training. Using custom computer vision technology, you are taken inside an artificial reality where the normal laws of physics no longer apply. Your movements are exaggerated so that you can easily dodge your opponent's bullets by jumping five meters in the air and landing behind his back. Using the dual projected screens, one at each end of the playfield, you can also continue by counter-attacking your stupefied enemy from the behind.

There have been discussions over the past few years about the problem of childhood obesity and how video games that force kids to be active may be at least part of the solution. While going outside and doing something is probably better, if they must be staring at a screen, they might as well be active about it. It appears that one insurance company has decided to test this out and is running a study by giving Dance, Dance Revolution to kids in an effort to make them lose some weight. While others have noted the aerobic nature of the game (and the game apparently has a calorie burning counter as an option), this appears to be the first insurance company promoting the game. weightloss aid
05/24/2004 06:59 PM
This CNN piece follows the tales of formerly supersized boy and girl geeks who shed *lots* of unwanted weight playing the wacky Japanese electronic game "Dance Dance Revolution." In DDR, players stomp around on a grid of brightly lit squares while hyperfast techno music blares at them from a video display unit. There's also a home version, which sells for under US$50.
As she cooled herself in front of a fan at a video arcade, two teenage boys danced on a machine nearby. Their sneakers pounded out a staccato rhythm at a pace so fast that "Lord of the Dance"'s Michael Flatley would be envious.

Not everyone sees dramatic results. Seventeen-year-old Justin Meeks says his body is more toned, but his weight hasn't changed. He's pleased to point out, though, that his dancing skills have helped him get girls. "Two. I'm guilty of that," Justin said with a grin as he watched friends play DDR.

Dance, familiar. Dance... 12/11/2003 02:34 PM

An interesting line about the selves manufactured by spies (that seems to me to have currency for all people who have cause to narrativise their lives in one way or another) from John Le Carré's rather blandly-titled (but also rather good) new novel Absolute Friends:

But who is Mundy Three, when Mundys One and Two have gone to bed? Who is this third person who is neither one of the other two, who lies awake while they sleep, and listens for the chimes of country bells he doesn't hear? He is the silent spectator. he is the one member of the audience who doesn't applaud the performances of his two familiars. He is made up of all the odd bits of his life that are left over after he has given the rest away.
