WiFi Spammer Caught

WiFi Spammer Caught 09/07/2004 03:08 AM
While we keep hearing scary, scary stories about how open WiFi access points would allow spammers and virus writers to send out their evil payloads with no chance of getting caught, it looks like reality has struck again. Back in June we noted that an open WiFi extortionist was caught using typical detective methods (and a good helping of stupid criminal behavior), and now Security Focus has the story of a plea deal for a WiFi spammer in California, who drove around Venice, California with a WiFi-enabled laptop sending out porn spam via open WiFi connections. What the article doesn't say is how the guy got caught. After all these stories about how it would be absolutely impossible to catch WiFi spammers, it seems we have pretty good proof that's not true. It's just that investigators have to use other, traditional detective means to track them down.

Are those titles for obtaining traffic from Web search engines, or for keywording their AdWords Support search? Given the wording of the titles and the robots exclusion, I would tend to assume the latter.

Spammer, Anti-Spammer Involved In
Lawsuit Will Hold Public Debate

Spammer, Anti-Spammer Involved In
Lawsuit Will Hold Public Debate
05/20/2004 11:41 PM
Julian Haight, the founder of anti-spam service SpamCop, and Scott Richter, the founder of spamming service OptInRealBig, are currently in the middle of a fairly nasty legal battle over whether or not SpamCop can block OptIn's spam. Still, the two have agreed to appear together in public and debate the topic. Both of their lawyers say that the debate will avoid the issue of the lawsuit, but as the article points out, that seems unlikely. The thing is, in listening to what both sides have said over the years, you already know what they're going to say in this debate - and they're talking at cross purposes. The spammers focus on their right to make money, while everyone else talks about their right to be left alone. The problem with the spammers' position is that they don't have the right to make money. They have the right to try to make money, but if it involves pissing everyone off, and everyone decides to create and use filters to make email bearable again - then that's their right too.

We've caught The Gay too!

We've caught The Gay too! 03/06/2004 01:51 AM

Portland has started issuing same-sex marriages today and I would have gone down there this morning to take some photos but it's raining cats and dogs outside. Although I'm happy to see some towns push the issue, I fear it'll give the recent backers of an Oregon state ammendment to ban gay marriages the extra push they need to get it on the ballot. That said, Oregon has yet to pass anything overtly anti-homosexual, so I doubt it passes. It's funny to hear the Oregon republican say this move is "an insult to the voters and to the people" when Oregon is one of only 10 states *without* any law banning same-sex marriage on the books. If it was really an insult, you'd think maybe a measure would have passed in the past two decades, no?

Would You Get Caught? Go Phish! 04/12/2005 06:10 AM
A week ago, MailFrontier launched an online phishing IQ test to see just how many users would get caught out by e-mails they received. The results of the first week make scary reading. So far, nearly 12,000 people have tried the test - and 92% of them got at least one wrong answer.

In a similar US version, taken by more than 300,000 people, the average score was under 70%, The average UK user got seven out of ten - just 7% got them all right. In America, 96% got at least one answer wrong.

A MailFrontier spokesman said: "The 10 test emails are all real-life examples caught by our users. This means that, had they appeared in people's email systems in real life, a significant number would not be able to tell a real email from a fraudulent one."

Twenty years on then, it looks as though the PC has finally grown up: the Mac was simply born mature. By Matt Loney (ZDNet UK via MyAppleMenu)

Twenty years ago this week, during the year of Big Brother, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak introduced the Apple Macintosh. Although the seminal advert sticks in everyone's minds, it's easy to forget just how revolutionary that little beige, boxy, Mac was. At the time, Windows version 1 was still a year away, and overlapping windows and icons on the PC would not appear for another three years, in the form of Windows 2--later to be renamed Windows 286. And of course all those early versions of Windows ran on top of the DOS command-line operating system.

The Phillies Spammer

The Phillies Spammer 01/04/2005 08:49 AM

Trial begins for Phillies fan accused of e-mail hacking: Being a crazy sports fan is one thing. Spoofing the email address of area sportwriters and spamming everyone, apparently, is not.

But yesterday, Carlson sat alone in a federal courtroom in Philadelphia, the accused boo-bird who hijacked the e-mail addresses of area sportswriters and sent out tens of thousands of anti-Phillies cyber-rants in their names.

"Like a lot of people, he was not happy about the fact that the Phillies were not winning," Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael L. Levy said in his opening statement to the jury. "But Mr. Carlson... decided to do something more. He launched an electronic attack against the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Newspapers Inc."

They're charging him with identify theft under federal law. He sent 100,000 emails, one of which resulted in 60,000 bounces to a local sports columnist.
