Disney's x-rated fare

Disney's x-rated fare 12/22/2004 01:57 AM
The original plates for the famous parody work (that was never sued over) Disneyland Memorial Orgy, is on sale at eBay. Here's the whole story on the piece, which ran in 1967 in a small underground newspaper and was created by Paul Krassner. I bet a copyright/trademark lawyer with a sense of humor buys this to mount over his desk soon.

An R-Rated Trademark Dispute?

An R-Rated Trademark Dispute? 04/19/2005 04:16 AM
The MPAA really does get a little crazy when it comes to over-reacting on intellectual property issues. Their latest move is to send out cease-and-desist letters to sites that host fan fiction -- not because those made up stories use characters, places and themes from real movies -- but because they use the (trademarked) MPAA movie rating system. That's right, if you happen to label your story as rated G, PG, PG-13, R or NC-17, you'd better watch out, the MPAA might come after you. Of course, they seem to ignore the fact that this system has become common around the world, is hardly taking anything away from the MPAA's own system (if anything, it enhances it), and also is useful in keeping age-inappropriate stories off the screens of those who shouldn't see them.

Object relational mappings are
over-rated...

Object relational mappings are
over-rated...
01/01/2004 06:18 PM

... At least according to Tim Bray:

Lots of architects have learned, painfully, that you usually can't magick relational rows away behind object/class abstractions. The right way to think about a database is as a set of normalized tables that are designed to be addressed with SQL strings.

This brings in to focus something I've been thinking about for quite a while. I always try to abstract away the details of the data storage layer behind some kind of interface, so that none of my front end code ever has to make a direct database call, instead calling methods on my application objects with names like "get_user_by_id" or "get_blog_entries_for_date". The idea is that I could, if I wanted to, completely switch out the underlying data source. I should also be able to write new front-end functionality that calls the existing application layer methods without having to change anything in the data access code.

There are a couple of problems here. Firstly, I've already got a data abstraction layer in the form of SQL. Although there are many discrepancies between implementations, basic SQL statements such as selects and joins should work on pretty much any database. Additionally, in my three years of building web applications I can't think of a single time I've needed to change the data layer for an existing application.

Modern database features such as stored procedures and constraints allow you to move huge chunks of application logic that relates to data coherency in to the database itself. In fact, PostgreSQL even allows you to write stored procedures in third party languages such as Python or Perl. With carefully written stored procedures, much of the important application logic could live in the database along with the data itself - a concept comparable to object oriented programming where the data and the methods that can be run on the data are encapsulated together.

I certainly haven't made up my mind one way or the other, and at the end of the day the best approach is the one that gets a project completed in a reasonable time frame and that results in easily maintainable code. Plenty of food for thought, in any case.

Subservient Chicken's X-Rated Bits
Exposed by Code
04/09/2004 04:04 PM
Following up on the launch of Burger King's "instameme" promo -- background in this earlier BoingBoing post -- geek supersleuth NEMESIS reveals the Subservient Chicken's naughty little nuggets:
"By backwards engineering the API within the HTTP headers, you can un-censor the censored ones:
Link 1 (scratch, crotch, balls, nutsack, destroy tokyo, stomp, godzilla, jonny rotten, punk rock, fsu, fuck shit up)
Link 2 (rub, chest, breast, breasts, boobs, jugs, tatas, hooters, jugs, nips, burning man, mardis gras, girls gone wild, playboy, penthouse, barely legal, leg show)
Link 3 (give bird, give the bird, bird, middle finger, flipping, fuck you, fuck off, flip , flip me off, flip them off)

Link 5 (touch yourself, naughty spot , naughtyspot, private, privates, sore, nuts , testicles, balls, groin, crotch)
Link 6 (show breast, breasts, tits , titties, slut, whore, tramp , seduce, hooker, prostitute, tatas, jugs, nice rack, your rack, tatas, show yer tits, show yer breasts, show your breasts, show yer tis)
Link 7 (masturbate, masterbate, play with yourself, jerk off , take off mask, take off costume, take off your, streak , flash , strip , naked, nude, take it off , get naked, take it all off, nekkid, get nekkid, whip em out, show your tits, show yer tits, tits , take off your clothes, take off yer clothes, clothes, off like a prom dress, prom dress, do me , blow me, take pants off, take off your pants, mask)
But to paraphrase another fast food empire: Where's the bukkake? Link to copy of file with index of all Subservient Chicken Behavior commands, many of which would merit FCC fines, if they were -- I don't know, read aloud on the Howard Stern Show or something. (Thanks also to Josh Santangelo!)
