Thermodynamics and Evolution

Thermodynamics and Evolution 12/19/2004 03:06 PM

Susan Crawford quotes an essay by John W. Patterson called "Thermodynamics and Evolution", part of a volume of scientific responses to creationism. She ties it neatly to Internet governance at the end.

Susan Crawford
Here is Patterson's conclusion:

"In reality, ... the 'uphill' processes associated with life not only are compatible with entropy and the second law, but actually depend on them for the energy fluxes off of which they feed. Numerous other kinds of backward processes in simpler, nonliving systems also proceed in this way, and do so in complete accord with the second law."

This all ties to internet governance. A sufficiently open net will tend towards order, not chaos -- and will do so on its own, with no external pilot.

Just reading the conclusion, you might think she's making a techno-utopian quantum leap, but the idea of open systems allowing evolution and order and seeming to defy entropy is any interesting one. Order can emerge in a system with increasing chaos around it if the system is open. I don't think being merely open guarantees that it will tend towards order. On the other hand, closed systems will tend to become disordered and the best way to maintain order in such a system is to move very slowly...

The Evolution of software 06/20/2004 05:17 AM

I've been in the software business for over 24 years and creating music, art and video with technology over 10 years before that.

So I gotta tell yah how much it warms my heart to see images of software packaged like this.

I found these images on Russell Beattie's blog. This is one of those rare moments that I'm not copying and pasting the whole dam post (Russell's posts especially get long.)

I'm just jazzed over the prospect of buying software in cute little SD cartirdges like this!

The Evolution of Manufacturing is a collection of New York Times articles, providing a historical perspective on manufacturing operations in the U.S. The collection consists of 12 articles published between 1909 and 2000. It includes an article by Henry Ford himself, and an article by Thomas Edison based on his interview of Henry Ford. Interestingly, the collection is an advertisement for Peoplesoft.

macosx.jpg As long as we're in M ac Mode, check out this visual history of Apple's desktop interfaces, starting with early Lisa
prototypes created on the Apple ][ in 1979. Along the way, the loaded up the interface with newfangled gizmos like the "mouse", and "scroll-bars".

What's most interesting is that there are a couple of concepts in the early Lisa sketches that didn't see the light of day until OS X.

Perl is often a workhorse behind the scenes, content to do its job quietly and without fuss. When the University of New York at Buffalo needed to offer electronic payment services to students, the Department of Computing Services reached for Perl. Jim Brandt describes how Perl (and a little Inline::Java) helped them build just enough code to allow students to pay their bills online.

More Verizon/Motorola V710 Details 07/29/2004 11:30 AM

v710_perihpasd.jpg imageSo we knew Motorola's new V710 was going to be hitting Verizon Wireless sometime in August, but internal documents reveal the exact date will be the 11th (and by internal documents I mean a PDF on their site, so peruse away.) Pricing looks about standard for a phone in this range: $420 at full retail; as low as $320 subsidized with a two-year contract.

The most interesting information, though, are the three listed Bluetooth Accessories, a headset ($80), a car kit ($200 ouch!), and an external speaker ($100). While their function is pretty much self-explanatory, what they don't address is that niggling rumor that the V710 somehow uses a non-standard Bluetooth implementation (which would mean other, less-expensive third-party peripherals wouldn't work). I guess we'll have to wait until someone gets their hands on one to confirm. (Thanks, Barry!)

As previously threatened, I've switched to Verizon and picked up a Motorola V710 yesterday. They just arrived on Wednesday, so I'm one of the first few folks to get one (at least from my local Verizon Wireless store). To recap, my reasons for switching are twofold: I wanted to get onto Verizon for the superior coverage. I wanted a Bluetooth phone. The V710 is Verizon's one and only Bluetooth phone. So far, all I can say is that it's...

v700_ebay.jpg imageVerizon has announced the highly-anticipated Motorola V710 -- a 1.23-megapixel and Bluetooth clamshell phone -- is now shipping and should be available nationwide by August. I know it doesn't make sense that Verizon has gotten a hot phone before other carriers, let alone get a hot phone and sell it for around $250 (after rebates and contracts, natch), but these are the strange days we live in.

Word on the street, though, is that the Bluetooth connectivity is crippled and can only be used with a few wireless earpieces and Verizon Wireless's proprietary syncing software. Now that sounds more like the Verizon we know. (Thanks, Aaron!)

Of course, this is only in the Northeast, where Verizon actually provides service, but if you've been itching to get your hands on it, RatShack is probably your best chance for now.

I'd like to add some more information on the Ximian Evolution on Mac OS X idea. If you are connecting to a Microsoft Exchange™ server you will only be able to talk POP or IMAP to the server. There is Ximian Connector™ for Microsoft Exchange™, which will let you utilize the most useful features of Exchange (office calendaring, resource scheduling, etc...). Alas it is only for the supported (read: linux) distributions. Ximian supports Yellow Dog, but I can't find any information about PPC support for Connector.

So, for those of you tied to Outlook, you should first find out if Outlook is tied to Exchange. If it is, Evolution on Mac OS X isn't the solution for you. In fact, I don't think Evolution on Mac OS X is the solution to anything right now as there are a number of very capable e-mail clients available. But if you need to talk to Exchange you will need to wait until Microsoft Entourage supports Exchange. Of course, the rumors are that only Exchange 2000 will be supported and not 5.5. Personally I doubt that. True it would be a very Microsoft thing to do, ensuring more people going down the upgrade path. But in reality the number of mac users in an organization probably wouldn't be able to squeak enough to get the grease that would be an upgrade to Exchange 2000. Plus, Outlook 2001 for Mac already talks to Exchange 5.5.

It's all just speculation and rumors at this point though, especially since Exchange 2003 is getting ready to be rolled out. Boy, I can't really express how happy I am not to be an Exchange admin right now. Discuss

LG-VX8100 w/ Bluetooth on Verizon 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

LG-VX8100.jpg imageDocuments filed with the FCC on Tuesday reveal a new LG Bluetooth clamshell-style camera phone coming to Verizon's network. Feature details on the VX-8100 are somewhat scarce, but it's definitely tri-mode, dual-band CDMA and presumably the successor to LG's (still not out) VX-8000. It's probably safe to assume a greater-than-1-megapixel camera given the 8000's 1-megapixeler (It's safe to assume that's not a word). It's pretty much impossible to speculate about a release date or street price, but if I had to guess I'd put it in the third or fourth quarter of 2005. We'll see. (Thanks, Bobby!)
