industry focus on code, freedom, and evangelism, the InnoTech

open source for business' sake. Sure there was talk about the
advantages of Linux and open source technology, the ability to impact
operating system-level functionality, and fighting unwarranted fears
of a different model, but the heart of the conference was the beat of
business -- cutting costs, driving value, and saving time and grief.

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PMBack in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to
differe
ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were
focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted
to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this
was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed
of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed
- and many people want it more for the always on connection than the
speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study
shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US,
many
more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower
price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is
good enough for what most people want to do with their connections
now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get
that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can
currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people
would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is
cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many
subscribers as well.

Web sites of too many Fortune 100 companies in the United States don't
take customers seriously, an upcoming report by research and
consulting firm The Customer Respect Group concludes. The 2004 Online
Customer Respect Study shows that while companies like Microsoft (No.
1) and Hewlett-Packard (No. 2) performed very well across the board,
most had inadequate privacy, operational or security measures in place
to reassure customers. The study evaluates the top 100 U.S. companies
in six categories -- simplicity, responsiveness, transparency,
principles, attitude and privacy -- and elicits end-user feedback on
their experiences of visits to the Web sites. Grading is done on a 0
(worst) to 10 (best) scale. Roger Fairchild, president of the
Bellevue, Wash.-based consulting firm, said he finds it amazing that
after three years of publishing report results, companies still don't
take their online sites seriously.

Tree-cutting and tag-spinning
Tree-cutting and tag-spinning
02/05/2005 10:19 PMI have been mulling over a big old post about tagging and
folksonomies, but book work has taken priority this week, and by now
most of what I wanted to say has been said by others (
here are
some go
od links).
So this is all I think I'll throw in to the discussion -- and
append to my previously
posted skepticism that people beyond early adopters will pursue
tagging with any avidity: "Tagging" is a great word. "Categories" are
onerous; they sound like work. "Tags" sound like play -- like a game
we played when we were tots. (Hey, it's ludic!)"Categories" also
implies, to many users, a mental model in which each item must live in
one category to the exclusion of others. "Tags" encourages overlap,
duplication, experimentation.
I like the way David Weinberger puts it he
re, as he compares older-fashioned information hierarchies with
folksonomic tagging: "The old way creates a tree. The new rakes leaves
together.... The old way -- trees -- make sense in controlled
environments where ambiguity is dangerous and where thoroughness
counts. Trees make less sense in the uncontrolled, connected world
that cherishes ambiguity." And the world of software is so allergic to
ambiguity that we should cherish any new development that opens a
space within the digital realm for multiple meanings.
If the software that begins to harness the tagging phenomenon can
stay true to the spirit the word evokes, I think it has a chance of
overcoming human intertia and resistance to doing more than the bare
minimum of metadata labor. Which places a premium (as Ross Mayfield points out) on ease of use. If people are going
to tag things at all, you need to make it really easy for them
to do it fast. Del.icio.us -- once
you set up its toolbar shortcut -- is pretty good, though I think it
would be great if it showed you how other people tagged a link
before you did your own tagging. Technorati's experiment with
tagging for blog postings obviously has a very long way to go, but
it's moving in the right direction.
Will the whole thing get debased by commercialism and swamped by spam? Sure. Then we'll return
to the drawing board.

FireTide Talks about Pilot Locations
FireTide Talks about Pilot Locations
12/02/2003 02:33 PMFireTide starts talking about its pilot rollout of a mesh wired
replacement, its shipping date, and the cost: In a briefing yesterday,
FireTide said that it had successfully rolled out over a dozen pilot
locations using its HotPoint mesh routing system, including an
airport, a museum, and a park. FireTide's 802.11b system, which costs
$799 (suggested retail price) per node, uses mesh networking
algorithms to automatically create an optimum route wirelessly between
nodes without customer intervention. Each node has two Ethernet ports,
which can support wireless access points from any vendor, or any other
Ethernet-enabled equipment. The company is based in Los Gatos, Calif.,
and Honolulu, and has worked with firms close to home. The Hotel Los
Gatos already had Wi-Fi in its rooms, but not in public areas or
meeting rooms. Company vice president Barbara Cardillo said that they
were able to have the hotel's public areas up and running in an
afternoon with six HotPoints. The Los Gatos Opera House wanted to
extend itself to businesses for meetings, but they lacked interior
connectivity. A few HotPoints later, linked to a business DSL in an
office in the building, and the Opera House is now open for commerce.
At the Kahalui Airport, where the FAA and USDA perform extensive
testing to avoid planes carrying invasive species in and out of
Hawaii, Cardillo said the airport faced a particular set of issues:
lots of low buildings separated by tarmacs with no connectivity among
them. The airport said it would cost $150,000 to connect the buildings
with wire, and would shut down various runways during construction. An
integrator came in and installed 11 HotPoints for about $20,000 to
fully enable the airport's baggage claim, baggage handling, and
offices; hardware cost about 25 percent of the total. FireTide is also
working with a company that brings PET scans--a next-generation
version of the MRI--in semi-trucks to hospitals around the country.
The company found that getting data from the scanner into the hospital
required annoying efforts each time because the same parking space
wasn't always available, and the only option they'd pursued was
stringing Ethernet cable. Now, with a few HotPoints, the semi is
linked right into the hospital network. Because HotPoint is just an
Ethernet replacement, the hospital and firm can overlay whatever
security they need on the link layer. FireTide also announced its
partnership and reseller program. The company will not sell...

Market Failure
Market Failure
09/19/2004 11:31 PMRight now we are encountering an irritating failure of
the free market. We had some ductwork done a
couple of months ago, and have a chunk of missing drywall in our
living room. There are some other bits and pieces of drywalling that
need doing here and there around the house, too. No problem, call up
an expert, right? Wrong. At this moment in Vancouver, no drywaller
can be bothered to take on a job that’s only one or two days’
work; they’re all coasting along doing ten-thousand-dollar-and-up
mansion renovations. Drywalling is tricky, irritating, messy work best
left to professionals... but it looks like we’re going to be taking
it on. At any Vancouver social gathering, the general unavailability
of tradespeople is a reliable conversation-starter. Hey kids, consider
staying away from that expensive and arduous college education and
taking up a trade; for damn sure your job won’t get outsourced to
another continent.
