T-Mobile GPRS on OS X
T-Mobile GPRS on OS X
12/04/2003 10:48 PMI got T-Mobile to enable GPRS ("T-Mobile Internet") on my phone the
other day. It works alright with the t68i and the PowerBook. I used
Ross Barkman's "modem scripts". With the right script with the magic
"use GPRS" commands I just had to choose the correct "CID" and enter
"internet2.voicestream.com" as the phone number. I also setup a "Data
account" on the phone; I'm not sure I actually needed to do that. A
few odd things: The T68i (or OS...

Email/GPRS Problems with the T-Mobile HP
h6315
09/14/2004 09:13 AM
So it's not all roses for T-Mobile and HP's new
iPaq h6315 Pocket PC phone. According to users on various forums who
purchased the recently-released device, using the built-in GPRS
connection to send email over 4k in size can cause a disconnection
(and subsequent failure). Others are reporting issues connecting to
other internet services over GPRS connection (and even Wi-Fi, although
I think that's just a random issue). T-Mobile has acknowledged the
issue (not publically, but to users reporting in the forums), and word
has it there is a problem in the h6315 GPRS TCP/IP stack.
That should be fixable via software patch, which hopefully will hit
the web soon.

Dell Offers Unlimited GPRS with New Card
and T-Mobile
11/10/2003 10:53 PMDell's new card for tri-mode GPRS is $99, but it allows unlimited GPRS
use on T-Mobile's network for $30 per month: The card works on Dell
Latitude and Inspiron notebooks, and you can subscribe to either
AT&T Wireless or T-Mobile for service. However, AT&T's plan
starts at $30 per month for 10 Mb, while T-Mobile's offering is $30
per month for unlimited usage or $50 per month for unlimited GPRS and
hotspot use on T-Mobile's network. Here's an important note, however:
the unlimited GPRS for no additional fee does require activation and a
one-year commitment, but it also only includes T-Mobile's GPRS
network. How extensive that network is, I'm not sure, but the question
is whether or not you're informed when you're roaming and using GPRS:
can you just not connect or are you charged some enormous rate without
knowing about?...

Let Them Eat Mobile Phones
Let Them Eat Mobile Phones
09/22/2004 09:15 PMReuters is reporting that African leaders want
to buy a bunch of
mobile phones because "there are more telephones in Manhattan than
in all Africa." Apparently, if you just add mobile phones to a bunch
of poor countries, all else will be solved. I've taken a deeper look
at this story over at TheFeature, where I compare the situation to
the famous
"cargo cults" of the South Pacific in World War II, where a
confusion over the big picture (and cause and effect) led groups of
people to think they could solve all their problems by mimicking the
basic actions of others, but not getting to the root causes of the
situation. I do think that technology can be a huge help to
developing nations, but ad hoc solutions to "just add technology X"
are never going to help unless the real issues are addressed first.

Exhaustive Review of Sony Ericsson GC82

04/16/2004 01:12 PMBrian Jepson reviews the Sony Ericsson EDGE card to the nth degree,
including configuration advice and photos: This in-depth, multi-page
review at Jiwire (our content partner) tells the results of Brian's
real-world testing of EDGE service over AT&T Wireless's network in
several cities, provides an explanation of how EDGE works (and why
performance might vary), and is fully illustrated with screen captures
and photos. Brian also provides the information you need to use the
card with Mac OS X and Linux, which aren't directly supported by Sony
Ericsson. A small download, a few code changes, recompile, and voila!
You've got high-speed cell data on unsupported computers. While $80 a
month may seem high for a consumer-level price, for business people
who need ubiquitous data access, EDGE is really the fastest best
option when it works. By January 2005, Verizon Wireless will have its
1xEvDO in potentially dozens of cities, while AT&T Wireless should
have debuted UMTS in four or five towns....

RIAA Turns Attentions to Internet2
RIAA Turns Attentions to Internet2
04/13/2005 04:36 AMStudents using the new superfast Internet2 connections at many US
colleges to share music and films are being targeted by the RIAA in
its latest blitz on piracy. More than 1.5 million files were being
shared on the network, according to the association - terabytes of
data said to be equivalent to an entire video-rental store.
The network is still mainly intended for research, but students
connected up realised the benefits of being able to download songs in
20 seconds and films in five minutes. However, the RIAA was less
impresed at this use for it and will today file lawsuits against 405
students at 18 collegs across the US.
Cary Sherman, RIAA President, said: "We cannot let this
high-speed network become a zone of lawlessness where the normal rules
don’t apply. By taking this initial action, we are putting students
and administrators everywhere on notice that there are consequences
for unlawful uses of this special network."
Much of the sharing goes through a DirectConnect-style program, i2hub.
A service spokesman said yesterday: "The i2hub organization does
not condone activities and actions that breach the rights of copyright
owners. Our companies are focused on bringing together students and
connecting them in ways never before achieved."

04/12/2005 02:01 PMLate last year, the RIAA made a big deal about how they wanted to
join the
Internet2 group as a member. It was obvious from the beginning
that the only reason they wanted to do so was to track to people file
sharing on the network. They did make some noises about using the
faster Internet2 technology to test out better digital distribution
techniques, but the real interest was in finding a few more people to
sue. In that, they've been successful. The latest round of lawsuits
