09/03/2004 08:15 AMDay nine of aKademy saw the start of the Users and Administrator's
Conference, and the celebration of the international Software Freedom
Day. With the end of the developers' section of the summit, the
hacking rooms began to thin out, but the loss in numbers was
accommodated by (for the most part local) crowds of users filing in to
hear from developers and other users and administrators. And for those
following the SUSE-Novell developments, a keynote from a Novell
employee was not to be missed.

Report: some Napster users share
passwords to save money
04/09/2005 03:30 AMXeni Jardin:
An article in the Register today reports that it is possible for more
than one person to share a username/password simultaneously on
Napster's digital music service, so they don't have to pay for
separate accounts.
Over the past couple of days MusicAlly has run several tests, during
which we were able to download and stream simultaneously from four
separate computers across two separate Internet connections for good
stretches of time. Our findings so far suggest this situation is the
same whether we use a trial account, a paid-for credit card account or
the £14.95 Napster To Go service. By comparison, several other
Internet subscription services, including Real's Rhapsody, log the
first user out automatically if a second user logs in using the same
username and password.
Arguably the fact that one of the subsequent users could order one of
Napster's paid-for permanent downloads, thus adding a charge to the
original user's card, provides a small disincentive against sharing
usernames and passwords. But Napster requires users to insert their
credit card security number before making a major purchase, such as
the upgrade from the £9.95 service to Napster To Go. What's more, the
credit card numbers themselves are not exposed on the accounts page,
so there's no danger of having your card details ripped off by someone
with whom you're sharing the music service.

Users Download Digital Music and Video
03/26/2005 12:51 PMThe Pew Internet & American Life Project reported this week that 36
million Americans, 27 percent of internet users, report having
downloaded music or video files. Half of this group have skirted the
traditional peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and commercial online
distribution services (i.e. Napster, iTunes). This is a significant
number of digital media users whose sharing of digital media is
untraceable by the recording industry and copyright holders.

Brazilians outnumber Yanquis on Orkut
2-1
07/18/2004 08:45 AMOrkut, Google's social networking tool, is only open to people who've
been invited to join the service. This means that once a
well-connected Burning Man attendee shows up in Orkut,
lots
of burners follow.
Which is how it is that suddenly, Portuguese speakers (presumably
mostly Brazilian, given Brazil's kick-ass connectivity and widespread
adoption of moblogging, blogging and other viral, social tools)
outnumber Yankees on the service nearly two-to-one. There's now a
vicious fight raging between USAns and Portuguese-speakers, as the
former group is displaced, for nearly the first time, by another
linguistic group.
(I'm reminded of a story that a product manager for Hotmail once told
me -- "Our growth curve was pretty steady, then one day someone sent
an email to someone in India with 'Get a free email account at
hotmail.com' in the footer and the next day we singed up half a
million users").
Tammy Soldaat, a Canadian, got a sample of Brazilian wrath recently
when she posted a message asking whether her community site on body
piercing should be exclusive to people who speak English.
Brazilian Orkut users quickly labeled her a "nazi" and "xenophobe."
"After that I understood why everyone is complaining about these
people, why they're being called the 'plague of Orkut,"' she said in a
site called "Crazy Brazilian Invasion."

12/13/2003 08:14 AM
Google's Jason Shellen proposes
a change in the functionality of the white-on-orange XML icon. He
says most users find it confusing, but I wonder about that. How many
people click on things they aren't interested in? I don't. Too busy. I
might, if I knew nothing about XML, click once, after seeing them pop
up in lots of familiar places, seeing something I don't get, click on
the Back button and remember not to go there again.
I agree that most Web users today won't understand what they
see when they click. However, I don't think they'll understand
something that looks different from, but contains the same information
as the page they just came from. Why is this here twice? the
uninformed user might ask. To which Shellen says, it's explained on
the page itself. But I don't read, responds the user, I just skim.
But it would be good to verify some of the assumptions by
actually asking some users what they think. And we know that the
white-on-orange buttons are good for something, and they will
be less useful if they aren't used consistently.

New Users Re-opened
07/13/2004 01:35 PMWell, tmenezes stern demands in the queue cowed me.* And the general
opinion, amongst both users and staff here, was that sponsorship was a
stupid idea. In principle, I don't agree (though it did need some
changes from the original concept), but I'm willing to go along with
the tide. Hopefully I will get a chnace to try out sponsorship
somewhere else in the future. So new user accounts are open again,
without any changes. We've had a bit of a cooling off period, I've
kicked out a pretty hefty number of idiots (who I expect to have to
kick out again and again, but what the hell). There's a few more
people with the powers and mandate to keep an eye on new users and nip
the annoying ones in the bud. There are also a couple features coming
to help the rest of you let us know who is being a jerk. Meanwhile,
those of you who've emailed me asking when you could get an account,
the time is now. Enjoy. * No, not really. Actually they would have
been open before he posted that, but I had to get Voxel to fix a
problem with our mail server.

So who else is part of the 1M club?
And BTW I'm not talking about dating sites. I'm talking about
sites who have over 1M end-users inter-connected together through
degrees of relationship.
