Cory Doctorow: Stefan sez, "With Antwerp named as World Book City in 2004, residents and visitors were being invited to create a biography of the city by SMS. On the 19th September, a selection of the submitted impressions have been compiled into a booklet combined with the focus on the different text points and giving an alternative view on Antwerp and its districts. The booklet (in Dutch) is available for download in PDF, plain text and a special version for iPods. By the end of October a complete English translation will be available under the same license: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0"> Link (Thanks, Stefan!)

Microsoft Integrate Belgian eID into MSN

Microsoft Integrate Belgian eID into MSN
Messenger
02/01/2005 09:39 PM
Popular messenger resource <a href="http://www.mess.be">Mess.be</a> is reporting that Microsoft will soon announce plans to incorporate the Belgian <a href="http://www.neowin.net/images/news/logos/eid.jpg">eI D system</a> with MSN Messenger. An eID, or electronic ID, gives users a trustworthy way of identifying themselves online and can be used for a variety of means. The eID contains a electronic chip like modern credit cards, and is gradually replacing the existing ID card system in Belgium.

"The eID is gradually replacing traditional identity cards and by December 31st of 2009, all citizens over 12 who reside on the Belgian territory should own the chip-equipped card. Just like the classical ID, the eID contains your photo, surname and first names, sex, nationality, place and date of birth, signature, national number as well as the validity period of the card. But all this information (including the photo) will also be electronically stored."

It's not known exactly how the system will integrate with MSN Messenger; card readers, although the most obvious solution, seem somewhat impractical for home users. The news was announced today by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates who is on a trip to Belgium; Gates is slowly making his way to the European government where he will be meeting with EU representatives to talk about the ongoing case against Microsoft. The eID system in Belgium would appear to offer the kind of solution that Microsoft tried to introduce (but failed) with Passport; it offers a variety of features based around the central idea of a single "sign-on" mechanism.

Gate's hinted at the possibility of other countries adopting a similar system, yet it is not known specifically which. In the UK, where the government has plans to introduce a similar ID card system, the issue is strongly fought against by privacy advocates and is viewed in a poor light by the public.

Today marks the official launch of Click The Vote. We are a grassroots non-profit dedicated to educating and organizing new technology users to promote legalized file-sharing, defend open source computing and demand democratic spectrum allocation for emergent technologies like Ultra-Wideband and software radio. We invite everyone to join up because over the coming election year we are going to have fun asking tough questions, flash mobbing candidates, sending targeted CD-Rs, utilizing P2P tools for grassroots efforts and demanding answers to important questions that affect the lives and futures of everyday users of new technology. The USA primaries are only months away and the general election is less than a year off. Time to get busy!

Hey, buddy! Have a hat!

Hey, buddy! Have a hat! 03/22/2005 04:42 PM
In a rare burst of common sense, I passed the Parrot design lead hat on. Chip Salzenburg, past perl pumpkin, has agreed to take on the hat, which I'm quite happy about. Chip's a sharp guy, and I have no worries that between Chip and Leo that Parrot's in good hands. I expect the news'll not take too many people by surprise, as it was past due. I've been essentially missing the past few months, with Real Life (pesky thing that -- I think I disapprove) getting in the way....

Research Buddy!

Research Buddy - Saves References To WebPages in Bibliographical Reference Form
http://researchbuddy.mozdev.or g/

Research Buddy saves references to webpages in a bibliographical reference form. The extension is designed to be used in the following way: 1) The user finds a quote on a webpage and wants to reference the quote in his/her paper, 2) The user selects the text of this quote, and, in the right-click menu, selects "Research Buddy" (this step is optional: the page can be referenced without selected text), 3) The plugin opens the main Research Buddy dialog, which allows the user to select which research topic the page should be filed under, and 4) The user clicks on "Add to selected topic", and the reference is saved to the topic. Depending on the preferences, the page (and it's images) may be saved to the user's disk. Users can also add new topics, delete old topics, rename topics, and view the bibliography for a topic. The Research Buddy preferences allow the user to configure the behavior of the plugin. Preferences are stored in a file, so they persist between web sessions: a) Bibliography format string (defaults to a generic reference string, b) Root directory to store pages in (set to the mozilla profile directory by default), c) Save the html of the referenced page (this is useful for ensuring access to the content regardless of the availability of the website. on by default, d) Save the images on the referenced page (useful for pages where content is at least partially contained in images. off by default to save disk space), e) Many bibliography strings will require an "Author" field. Due to the difficulty of accurately finding the author of a given webpage, they decided that this task be left up to the user, and f) The citations are stored in xml format, and an html file is only generated when the user clicks on "View Topic". This has been added to the tool section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog and added to Student Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.
