Open-Source Mesh Group Releases

Open-Source Mesh Group Releases
Software, Discusses Social Goals
04/28/2004 01:03 PM
Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network releases first-generation mesh/cloud software, seeks input and development: I spoke with Sascha Meinrath, one of the folks leading the CUWiN project, about the scope of the project, their goals for outside participation, and his recent trip to Amsterdam to meet with a group designing documentation on wireless networks for developing nations. The CUWiN project wants to allow self-forming, noncentralized, mesh-based Wi-Fi networks using standard, old PCs with no configuration. Slightly more advanced units could be ruggedized boxes using Compact Flash, but the basic unit would be a 486 or later PC with a bootable CD-ROM or bootable floppy that bootstraps a CD-ROM. Once booted, a unit finds other similar units without any other configuration or control and forms a mesh. "We've been developing software now since about 2000, and our idea is to build software that is super user friendly, super easy for someone who doesn't understand the nuances of the technology or community wireless networking to set up their own system," said Meinrath. It's an attempt to enable community networking to spread beyond the folks who are self-starters. To test their current software, they put together a bunch of old Pentium 133-based system with off-the-shelf Wi-Fi gear, burned CD-ROMs, booted the boxes and watched the mesh network form within five minutes. However, the current generation of software "won't scale well: there's no route prioritization, and there's this problem of the hidden node problem," he said. (In a hub-and-spoke network, hidden nodes can see the hub not other spokes and can disrupt other network traffic by improperly sending at times when other nodes are transmitting resulting in interference and back-off behavior that reduces network performance. Mesh avoids some hub and spoke problems, but can effectively move the hidden node problem to any mesh point that has some connected nodes that can hear each other and some that cannot.) CUWiN is design a system to prioritize routes among mesh nodes based on MIT Roofnet, and are looking into the Hazy Sighted Link State (HSLS) routing issue. HSLS uses packet economics: more dropped packets in a given route de-emphasizes it shunting more traffic to more successful routes. (Read more about this in CUWiN's FAQ.) The software release by CUWiN of a CD-ROM image containing bootable node software along with the developer's resource (distributed under a BSD license with plans to move to a GPL license) is part of...

Chuck Joiner's latest User Group Report leads off the news at The Macintosh User Group (MUG) Center Web site this week. This edition of the Report focuses on professional leadership trainer Jen Shelby, who talks about motivation in the context of user groups. Joiner also uses The MUG Center to note that presentations on the new iPods and wireless networking are available to Apple-recognized user group ambassadors through Apple Sales Training Online. In addition, the ambassadors can also contact Apple Sales Web to get the latest edition of Mailbox, a DVD that includes videos from WWDC 2004 and other materials that groups will find useful. Finally, Joiner points out Melbourne PHP User Group's guide to writing book reviews, which he says applies to various types of user groups. Visit the MUG Center to learn more.

An Open Letter to Apple

An Open Letter to Apple 07/09/2004 04:49 PM

17inchimac.jpgAlex Salkever of Business Week has written an open letter to Apple's Steve Jobs in a recent column that provides some interesting perspectives on where Apple should go next in terms of its computer business. Most of his points are awfully hard to argue with.

You've been to Target (TGT), right? You probably seen the terrific product designs such as well-known architect Michael Graves' line of stylish housewares -- offered a budget prices. Heck, Blue Light Specials at Kmart (KMRT ) haven't been the same since Martha Stewart's line of kitchen gear, sheets, and towels hit the aisles several years ago. Dumpster-diving debutantes can't get enough of them. Even sportswear designer Mossimo makes great threads for fiscal lightweights.

We're in the era of cheap chic, Steve. And I have no doubt that Apple can play that game with the best of them. Give us a really cheap, really cool PC, and watch them fly off the shelves.

He also makes the case for selling iMacs without integrated monitors, and I hope that's in the works for the next series of iMacs. I've decided to purchase a Mac later this year, and while the iMac displays are gorgeous, I tend to look at them as a barrier to switching when I have to pay to replace a perfectly good CRT that's already sitting on my desk. I also cringe at the thought of what happens when the display gets along in years. Right now, you have to chuck the whole iMac and get another.

There's a pretty big hole in Apple's product line right now with the removal of the single-processor G5 from production. I'm a developer, and interested in a serious computer, so the iMac/eMac form factors don't appeal to me much, due to the home user target and the integrated monitors. On the other hand, the $2,000 starting price for a G5 is asking a bit much from a machine that, from my position as a PC user, is an unproven value. The way the refurbished single-processor G5's are flying out of Apple's refurbished section, I don't think I'm the only person that's in that boat.

I'm curious to hear from the Mac folks on how they see Apple's position.
