3155, 2215i

nokia_6155.jpgNokia is launching three new CDMA handsets in the US, out of which only the 6155 looks at all interesting. The 262k-color clamshell has a 1-megapixel camera, and features the new 'Enhanced Voice Commands,' which lets you do voice dialing and basic commands without pre-training the phone with Voice Tags. Don't expect the 6155 out here until late this year.

The Nokia 3155 and the 2215i, as they say in Norway, smell like the asses of 500 horses. InfoSync has details on the low-end models, as well as more information on the 6155.

Toshiba wasn't the only one making fuel cell announcements last week, it seems. Nokia was demonstrating fuel cell prototypes of the Communicator phones (9290s, probably) that even had accompanying Bluetooth headsets powered by methanol, as well. Something in the article got me thinking, though. At one point, they mention selling methanol in 12ml portions "about the size of a perfume bottle." I wonder if you could actually add scents to the methanol and use them as perfumes? Would the fuel cells be able to operate with the smelly gunk added to the fuel? Does methanol cause a searing, burning pain when spritzed on bare skin? Would that be a problem? (Thanks, Teemu!)

There's another downside to Nokia's new 7700 cellphone which is coming out next year in Europe (besides the sidetalking, that is). Since it comes with a built-in digital TV tuner, the 7700 will almost certainly be subject to the television licensing fees that many European countries collect to fund public broadcasting. Read...

We wrote yesterday that our initial reaction to Nokia's new 7700 cellphone was that it looked a lot like the N-Gage. We didn't realize how right we were. Our pal Rich Brome of PhoneScoop got confirmation from Nokia that just as with the N-Gage, to make a phone call with the 7700 you have to hold the thing up to your head at an awkard sideways angle (unless you want to use a headset). This bit of misguided industrial design has quickly turned out to be one of the most widely derided features of the N-Gage, even inspiring parody sites like SideTalkin.com. Nokia, what were you thinking? Read...

Thanko iCombi Bluetooth iPod Set 04/07/2005 12:44 PM

thanko_ipod.jpg image
Thanko's new "iCombi Wireless Stereo Headset" is a package deal with headphones and Bluetooth adapter for most modern flavors of iPod (except Shuffle). Compatible with 2nd, 3rd, 4th, photo and mini iterations of "everyone's favorite audio player," the iCombi headphones feature pause, skip and a couple other buttons. The lithium ion battery inside the headphones will last you for about 11 hours, but not that it really matters as you can just recharge them by USB anyway. Thanko didn't mention whether or not the headphones were compatible with the Headset Bluetooth profile (for your phone), but they don't have a mic so I guess not. The range is 10 meters (about 32 feet), and price 15,800 yen.

Nokia Bluetooth Picture Headset HS-13w 09/10/2004 09:26 AM

nokia_hs-13w_narrow.jpg imageIn all the fuss over the new Nokia fashion phones yesterday, I missed this Nokia Bluetooth Picture Headset (the HS-13w); fortunately, our pal Josh Rubin's keen eye scoped it out. The cool thing about the HS-13w is that it's meant to be worn as a locket, where you can use the built-in color display to look up and dial contacts. That way you can keep Nokia's funky 7280 (or any other Bluetooth-handset compatible Nokia) in your pocket. Pretty slick.

First Nokia Series 60 Worm Discovered,
Infects Via Bluetooth

First Nokia Series 60 Worm Discovered,
Infects Via Bluetooth
06/15/2004 11:54 AM

bluetooth.jpgIt's only a proof of concept for now, but Symantec's Security Response site is listing the first worm for Nokia Series 60 phones, called EPOC.Cabir. The worm transmits itself over open Bluetooth connections to other phones, copying itself over where it continues to search for other Bluetooth-enabled devices -- after copying itself to another, hidden directory from where it executes, meaning even deleting the trojan .SIS file and rebooting won't stop the worm from replicating.

Since EPOC.Cabir is proof of concept alone for now, there is no payload (like deleting all your contacts or something), besides the diminished battery life of a phone always actively searching and copying over Bluetooth. Don't get too worried, for now, but make sure you have disabled Bluetooth when not in use and never accept Bluetooth connections from unknown sources or open/execute files from unknown sources -- you know, all the basic network safety tips you should know from when we all collectively saved the internet from Outlook viruses.

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

photo_dell_gps.jpg imageTIME Magazine reviews Dell's GPS Navigation System for Pocket PC (Dell or otherwise) and comes away pretty happy, finding it "exceptionally good at certain things," like rerouting directions when you miss a turn (an exceptionally handy feature for absent minded drivers such as myself). One downside is the all-or-nothing setup of the map data, though. You can either every city and its area along your whole trip if you have the data, or just the start and finish - there's no option for just the major highways.

See, Stowaway sent me one of their new folding Bluetooth Keyboards for review, but thanks to the indolent slime slurping shit-for-brains that helm our local FedEx hub, I got to bumble around Queens ("Like Brooklyn, But Norther") trying to track down a counterfactually extant package while Hardy got to fiddle around with his special new dandypants wireless keyboard. Hates him. Hurts him. Then the recreant shit swizzle had the nerve to only sort of like it, calling it "only marginally better" than the infrared version.
