Mac OS X Virus Idea: Mac Trash Talk

Mac OS X Virus Idea: Mac Trash Talk

Mac OS X Virus Idea: Mac Trash Talk 04/09/2004 04:00 PM

I've had this idea for a while and have only told one person so far. That means it's probably time to solicit feedback (or groans) from a larger audience on it. The intent is not to build a virus, but merely to think about what an amusing virus on the Mac might do--one that takes special advantage of the Mac OS X platform. It started out, like many ideas do, as the result of some idle brain time. For no...

Trash Talk Getting Life and Purpose 04/09/2004 04:00 PM
Well, the web's a funny place, isn't it? Just the other day, I posted my random idea about a trash talk virus for Mac OS X. You know, virus is probably the wrong word. It's more of an ad-hoc network entertainment application. But that's not the point. Anyway, within a matter of a day or so it got some interesting traction. First off, Ross suggested that it be used to help track down the folks who screw up wireless networks...

Yow, DME cranked up the numbers at Planet Sun, so I got kind of buried when I went by there this morning; he’s got some interesting stats. Let’s open with a nasty political joke (the best kind). New today, a couple of Javaphone geeks speak up: Jeff Solof on the ultracoolness of Voice Connect and Hinkmond Wong on wireless snitching. For a side trip into philosophy, M. Mortazavi talks up Dreyfus’ On the Internet and makes it sound like a must-read. Finally, I hate it when life online veers into nastiness about personalities and politics and that kind of stuff, but hey, engineers are competitive, and I have no problem with a little my-tech-is-better-than-yours; so in this corner we have Eric Schrock seriously dissing Linux troubleshooting capabilities. I’m sure there’ll be someone in the other corner before too long.

The Incivility of Political Discourse in American Politics has reached unprecedented heights according to the August PQ Index (Political-sensitivity Quotient) released by The Global Language Monitor (www.LanguageMonitor.com). The PQ Index is a proprietary algorithm that tracks politically sensitive words and phrases in the media and on the Internet. Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Girlie Men,' Vice President Cheney's use of vulgarity, President Bush and Senator Kerry both being characterized as 'Liars!', Mrs. Kerry's rude directive to a reporter, and RFK, Jr's 'Fascist America' proposition highlight Top 10 for August. Taking out the trash 04/09/2004 04:10 PM
So, I went to the talk on unified garbage collection theory Monday. I'd like to say it was breathtakingly innovative, filled with impressive insights, but honestly it was pretty mundane. There wasn't anything new, though it wasn't a waste of time. The executive summary, for those who're interested, is that Refcounting and Tracing, as means of garbage collection, are really the same thing. Or, rather, opposites of one another--refcounting finds the dead stuff and tracing finds the live stuff. Which is better for you depends on the application and your requirements. Slides for this talk are on the web. Even...

BoingBoing reader ben peek says:
Talking garbage bins, how's that not futuristic coolness? but how long until they get irritating? (and will they update the poptune bins monthly?) from the article:

"In a uniquely German mix of hi-tech gadgetry and environmental awareness, Berlin authorities are installing talking trash cans in some of the German capital's most popular squares. Pop your litter into one of the bins and it's liable to say thank you. Or welcome you to Berlin in English, French or Japanese. Or even sing.

After a successful trial period, 20 of the bins have been installed in the Zoologischer Garten area of western Berlin's biggest shopping district and at the bustling business and entertainment hub of Potsdamer Platz."

Microsoft Creates Anti-Virus Bounty To
Help Track Down Virus Writers
11/05/2003 10:59 AM
What do you if you're in an unchartered area with no reasonable law enforcement, and criminals are running rampant? You convince everyone to become the "enforcement" arm and find someone rich enough to pay them to help fight crime. Microsoft can't be bothered to fix a few of the holes in their programs that make it incredibly easy to pass on viruses, so instead, they're setting aside $5 million for anti-virus bounty hunters who can track down anyone responsible for worms, trojan horses or viruses. The rewards will be given out in $250,000 wads of cash from Bill Gates wallet increments. So, now, who's going to round up an anti-virus posse?

Records from the trash: rescued audio

Records from the trash: rescued audio 08/23/2004 06:36 AM
Cory Doctorow: Great LiveJournal post about one person's garbage-picked record-album habits:
And if something is not my cup of tea, I try to pass it on. For example, I'm not a huge fan of hip-hop, though I certainly like some of it. Whenever I show up at my local with a pile of records I've scavenged, Andre, one of the barmen, will probably say, sounding genuinely offended, "How come you never get any for me?" A few months ago, I spotted a gigantic stack of mostly hip-hop 12-inches awaiting the Sanitation Dept. I grabbed a gigantic pile, as many as I could carry, and made my way back to the bar, where I'd just seen him. "Hey, Andre, I got a present for you…" I said, and dropped the discs on the bar. "I'll be right back--there's more." It was worth it just to see the startled look on his face. (Out of the whole bunch of maybe 250 I kept about 8 or 10.)

And then there are 78s, which most people don't have the machinery to play. I've become interested in old 78rpm records ever since my father gave me his collection of jazz records--as well as a turntable to play them on--not long before his death. While there were some LPs in the bunch--and some of those were amazing ones--the majority of the collection consisted of jazz 78s, mostly from the 1940s, but some dating back as early as 1929, which means I'm the third generation to own them, since my father was only 15 that year and obviously acquired those records secondhand.

She picked them up and asked my friend "What are these??" to which my friend had to explain what floppy disks are. After her explanation, her younger sister replied with "Oh, but I thought you could only store stuff on CDs, e-mail, and on your Palm Pilot." I guess many young children these days have started to recognize PDAs as a normal way to keep information, and don't recognize things such as floppy disks!" [Daily Palm]

Missing Top Secret Disks Actually Just A

08/11/2004 05:09 AM
Remember those well publicized "missing" top secret hard drives from Los Alamos? The same missing drives that had the FBI threatening to arrest a novelty store owner? Turns out they might not have been missing after all. In fact, the entire mess is being chalked up to a computer glitch in their inventory system that declared a "false positive" suggesting the drivers were missing when they weren't. You would think, given the seriousness of such a situation that any inventory system would have some sort of immediate manual method for checking on the actual drives the second the system sounds the "uh oh, something's missing" alarm. Apparently not. Of course, this brings up the second question. If the drives have really been safely at home this whole time, why didn't anyone bother to check there in the first place?
