HTML Utopia -- Designing Without Tables

HTML Utopia -- Designing Without Tables

HTML Utopia -- Designing Without Tables 06/27/2002 02:08 AM

A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a site that really inspired me. It was beautifully designed and presented. It was not until I looked at the code behind it that my heart truly skipped a beat. The site was A List Apart, the brain child of Jeffrey Zeldman. Zeldman is also involved in WaSP - The WEB STANDARDS PROJECT that launched the browser upgrade campaign. The campaign encourages Users to upgrade to browsers that meet WC3 recommendations and lobbies the browser developers to build browsers that comply more thoroughly. I decided to have a crack at rebuilding a SitePoint page without using any tables (currently there are 18 tables being used, 17 of which are unnecessary). -- Julian Carroll

Building Accessible HTML Tables for the
Disabled

Building Accessible HTML Tables for the
Disabled
10/01/2002 12:25 PM
Blind and other severely vision impaired users rely on assistive technologies to render web content. All text can be fed through a screen reader or refreshable braille display to be presented to the user. However, despite containing text, the table above could make a real mess of things without a few extra behind the scenes accessibility enhancements. To an assistive browser our table could well look like this:
Time Planned Task Preferred Task What I actually did
10 - 12 Catch up on replying to my emails. Have a lie in. Surfed
aimlessly.
12-1 Have Lunch. Have Lunch. Had Breakfast.
1-5 Finish that project. Go to video store. Caught up on my emails.

Ok, we can still kind of make a little sense of it. That is because we can see it. A blind user can't easily scan back up and check what the third piece of information relates to. Was it what I actually did, or what I would have preferred to do? This is why we need to create relationships within the code of our table. Thankfully, from HTML4.0 a bucketful of accessibility enhancements were introduced to enable the conscientious developer to do this. -- Tim Roberts

Designing Webliographies In an Effective and Simple Manner: A Step by Step Process
http://www.webol ogy.itgo.com/2004/v1n1/a2.html

Abstract:
This paper explains web-based information retrieval as one of the main research interests of information professionals during the last decade, and introduces machine-oriented and human-oriented approaches in the designing process of Internet search tools and concerns with the second approach as a basis for the discussion. Then it defines the concept of webliography as a special type human-edited search tools. It is in fact an enumerative list of hypertext links and a gateway to the scientific sources of information on the Net, whether annotated or not. The existence and development of webliographies on the Net are justified based on a brief literature review. 14 phases of webliography production process are also enumerated step by step and a conclusion is provided finally. This has been added to Reference Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This has also been added to the toold section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Designing Trees and Hierarchies in SQL

Designing Trees and Hierarchies in SQL 06/05/2002 07:50 AM
If you've followed Joe Celko's columns or bought his books, he recommends the nested set model for representing trees in SQL (he's posted it on SQL Team a few times). It's very well detailed in the following articles, Part I, II, III, IV, and also in his book, SQL For Smarties, and I recommend checking it out. It's very efficient and makes it extremely easy to pull out trees/subtrees from the table.

However (you knew this was coming!) one of the issues I have with nested sets is the complexity required to do relatively simple tasks, like adding, deleting, or moving nodes in the tree. Even finding an employee's immediate supervisor or subordinates requires 3 self-joins AND a subquery! - robvolk

"btn" Focusses on MS SQL Server, but the principles can be applied to most databases.

toms_slim_yepp.jpg imageTom's Hardware has an at-first off putting comparison review of the Creative MuVo Slim and Samsung's Yepp YP-T5 where they attempt to contrast the two oddly-shaped flash memory players, but mostly just end up with two separate reviews. Of the two, I definitely prefer the MuVo Slim. It may be twice as heavy and oddly shaped, but you have to admit there is a certain appeal to having 256MB of music stored in a form-factor that shares both the size and shape of a cassette tape. The fact that it uses USB 2.0 just takes it over the top.

Samsung Adds DivX Support via Firmware
Update
07/28/2004 01:20 PM

img_DivX01.jpg imageNow I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but do any of the current movie download services offer their wares in DivX format? Because if not, where exactly does Samsung, when detailing its plans to upgrade some of its DVD player firmware to support DivX, intend its customers to get the files that "can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time?" Surely not the internet. That would be tantamount to murdering film carpenters' entire families.

That aside, DivX firmware updates for Samsung players from the company itself is plus plus. Now if they'd throw in a little XviD flavor we could stream the movies we've already (legally, for honest) ripped. Update: Oh, hey, look at the image that I put up myself. I'm mostly functional! (Thanks, Antii!)

Also, Happy Birthday, Modbuster!
