Trash Talk Getting Life and Purpose

Trash Talk Getting Life and Purpose 04/09/2004 04:00 PM

Well, the web's a funny place, isn't it? Just the other day, I posted my random idea about a trash talk virus for Mac OS X. You know, virus is probably the wrong word. It's more of an ad-hoc network entertainment application. But that's not the point. Anyway, within a matter of a day or so it got some interesting traction. First off, Ross suggested that it be used to help track down the folks who screw up wireless networks...

Mac OS X Virus Idea: Mac Trash Talk

Mac OS X Virus Idea: Mac Trash Talk 04/09/2004 04:00 PM
I've had this idea for a while and have only told one person so far. That means it's probably time to solicit feedback (or groans) from a larger audience on it. The intent is not to build a virus, but merely to think about what an amusing virus on the Mac might do--one that takes special advantage of the Mac OS X platform. It started out, like many ideas do, as the result of some idle brain time. For no...

Yow, DME cranked up the numbers at Planet Sun, so I got kind of buried when I went by there this morning; he’s got some interesting stats. Let’s open with a nasty political joke (the best kind). New today, a couple of Javaphone geeks speak up: Jeff Solof on the ultracoolness of Voice Connect and Hinkmond Wong on wireless snitching. For a side trip into philosophy, M. Mortazavi talks up Dreyfus’ On the Internet and makes it sound like a must-read. Finally, I hate it when life online veers into nastiness about personalities and politics and that kind of stuff, but hey, engineers are competitive, and I have no problem with a little my-tech-is-better-than-yours; so in this corner we have Eric Schrock seriously dissing Linux troubleshooting capabilities. I’m sure there’ll be someone in the other corner before too long.

It's the 10-second rule: if you can't file something in 10 seconds, you won't do it. Todo.txt involves cut-and-paste, the simplest interface we can imagine.

It's also the simplest way to find intercomation. EMACS, Moz and Panther have incremental search: when you type a "t" it goes to the first mention of "t", add "to" and you jump to the first instance of "to", etc.

This is being added to Longhorn (Unix geeks, we've had this since Jan 1 1900, and it will go away in 2038).

Power-users don't trust complicated apps. Every time power-geeks has had a crash, s/he moves away from it. You can't trust software unless you've written it -- and then you're just more forgiiving.

Text files are portable (except for CRLF issues) between mac and win and *nix.

Did Google Get Loud On Purpose? 08/13/2004 06:07 PM
Well, it's a ridiculously slow news day, so it's really no surprise that something like this might boil up. Following yesterday's efforts to give techies and investment types an extra reason to buy a copy of Playboy, IPO pundit Tom Taulli is (half jokingly... I think) rolling out the rumor that Google purposely pushed Playboy to get the interview out in order to have the SEC delay their IPO until slightly more favorable conditions existed. That would seem especially sneaky, and it's unlikely it's actually what happened. Though, if it is what they tried to do, it appears the plan didn't work. The SEC has made Google explain away the difference between their filings and the Playboy article, but otherwise has let the IPO move forward.

Nova Spivack raps it out.....

Communities of Purpose: The Third Type of Community

I've been thinking about different types of communities recently. Two forms of community that are often discussed are "communities of interest" where the members share a common set of interests (e.g. a community of people interested in Japanese culture), and "communities of practice" where the members share a common set of skills (e.g. a community of marketing professionals). To these I would add a third type called a "community of purpose," where the focus is on a shared goal (e.g. a political activist community or a community collaborating on a common project). Most existing community tools today are either focused on building communities of interest or communities of practice. But I am more interested in creating tools that help people create more productive communities of purpose. To do this we need to merge the functionality of groupware and knowledge management with emerging community tools for social networking, blogging, and wikis.

More Adults Trying To Capitalize On
Video Games For Higher Purpose
04/15/2005 06:44 PM
The media has latched on to this theme and is clinging to it like a bug-eyed Grand Theft Auto addict: using video games to educate the younger generation. Yesterday, it was about teaching kids how to combat world hunger and avoid the perils of the internet. Today, it's about li teracy and cultural sensitivity. First, a teacher in the U.K. has thought of creative use of an existing game -- the Myst series. He takes his young students through a round of Myst play, encouraging them to pretend they're actually inside the scenes and then write down their observations. The second example involves a new game sponsored by the U.S. Army that walks soldiers through everyday situations in Iraq, schooling them on the appropriate ways to interact with locals. Both stories demonstrate the educational potential of hip-looking games. Adults are increasingly catching on to the medium's power to keep the attention of younger people. It also raises a corollary lesson: If the game is going to work in the classroom, it should be innovative and interesting, rather than contrived and pandering.

Taking out the trash

Taking out the trash 04/09/2004 04:10 PM
So, I went to the talk on unified garbage collection theory Monday. I'd like to say it was breathtakingly innovative, filled with impressive insights, but honestly it was pretty mundane. There wasn't anything new, though it wasn't a waste of time. The executive summary, for those who're interested, is that Refcounting and Tracing, as means of garbage collection, are really the same thing. Or, rather, opposites of one another--refcounting finds the dead stuff and tracing finds the live stuff. Which is better for you depends on the application and your requirements. Slides for this talk are on the web. Even...

BoingBoing reader ben peek says:
Talking garbage bins, how's that not futuristic coolness? but how long until they get irritating? (and will they update the poptune bins monthly?) from the article:

"In a uniquely German mix of hi-tech gadgetry and environmental awareness, Berlin authorities are installing talking trash cans in some of the German capital's most popular squares. Pop your litter into one of the bins and it's liable to say thank you. Or welcome you to Berlin in English, French or Japanese. Or even sing.

After a successful trial period, 20 of the bins have been installed in the Zoologischer Garten area of western Berlin's biggest shopping district and at the bustling business and entertainment hub of Potsdamer Platz."
