Bloglines Feedback

Bloglines Feedback

Bloglines Feedback 04/09/2004 04:00 PM

As I mentioned a while ago, I'm now using Bloglines as my news/blogs/rss/etc aggregator. It took a bit of time to adjust to using the service, but overall I'm pretty happy with it so far. It has caused me to change the way I read in a few ways, but nothing earth shattering. And I've found a few minor annoyances along the way too. Changes First off, I had to adjust the way I update the blogroll on the right...

If you are not using a news aggregator, you might want to give Bloglines, a server-based news aggregator, a try.  While at it, subscribe to my blog.  You won't see my face next to the posts any more, but maybe you'll like that.  ;-)

Bloglines and Firefox fix

Bloglines and Firefox fix 07/20/2004 04:07 PM

I was trying to use Firefox to read feeds in Bloglines but when I clicked on a feed, nothing would happen. There were no JavaScript errors, no indication that something was wrong, but clicking on a feed simply didn’t work.

According to Bloglines, the problem lies with the Tabbrowser Extensions for Firefox. To fix the problem all you need to do is add a line to your prefs.js. The easiest way to do this is type about:config in the address bar. That will show your preferences. Then right click and chose to add a new boolean value. For the preference name, enter docshell.frameloadcheck.disabled and then enter "true" for the value. Problem solved.

Bloglines for Connected PDAs!

Bloglines for Connected PDAs! 01/19/2004 12:51 PM

"We are pleased to announce the beta version of Bloglines optimized for connected PDAs. Simply go to www.bloglines.com using your Palm or Windows CE powered PDA, and you will automatically be transferred to the optimized version of Bloglines. You can also access the PDA version directly by going to http://www.bloglines.com/mobile . The optimized version of Bloglines contains fewer graphics and simpler pages for fast loading and easier navigation on PDAs. Now it's easy to stay up to date with your Bloglines subscriptions while away from your computer." [Aggregators Yahoo! Group]

Testing it now! Have my prayers been answered???

Update: yes and no. Bloglines on my Treo 600 is fab-u-lous! I started out by testing five feeds, and it looked goooood. Next I loaded my current list of subscriptions from Radio and displayed all 244 of them in the desktop version. Just as I was going to view them on my handheld, though, the BlogLines server went down. I'll try it again later and post another update, although this does point out one of the problems with relying on a hosted aggregator that is out of your control.  :-

Of course I'll be paring that list down quite a bit to show only the more important ones on my T600, but so far I'm quite happy with my original test of five feeds. The screens are as efficient as those in Hand/RSS in terms of usage of screen real estate.

I'll have to play with this some more, but label me verily impressed! Two problems stop me from completely switching to Bloglines, though. The first is that I don't see a way to do a chronological view of feeds on my handheld, and the second is that there is no way for me to post to my blog from within BL, a feature that is critical to my ability to maintain my site. If those two features were added, I would switch aggregators in a heartbeat!

IE's Failings Point Way to RSS

"Opinion: When Microsoft abandoned Internet Explorer development to concentrate on fixing the browser's security vulnerabilities, it opened the door to the emerging RSS revolution. ....

Pluck's Trojan horse strategy underlines the profoundly disruptive nature of the RSS transformation. The synchronization genie, once out of the bottle, will act as an accelerant for RSS client market share as a percentage of overall browser usage. At some point, perhaps as early as Inauguration Day, IE—and the Web—will be subsumed by the RSS platform. " [eWeek, via Scripting News]

One of the major catalysts of the RSS revolution was the introduction of Bloglines. Free and web-based, it's far and away the best choice for newbies, and it's easy to center a class or tutorial around it. What innovations will we see in the next six months that will be the next great leap? And will your library be able to participate in the revolution?

I am happy to report that my home library will be. More when I can show it!

Feedster/Bloglines citation bookmarklets

Feedster/Bloglines citation bookmarklets 07/19/2004 08:12 AM
Feedster's Scott Rafer wrote to point out that there is a URL syntax for assembling the conversation around a blog post:
http://www.feedster.com/links.php?url=

http%3A%2F%2Fweblog.infoworld.com%2Fudell%2F2004%2F07%2F16.html%23a104
1
You need to escape the target URL, which isn't easy to do while copying and pasting it, but is easy for a bookmarklet to do. So, drag this link -- Feedster Citations -- to your toolbar, and you can have one-click access to the conversations around any blog post you're currently viewing. ...

Retailing Feedback from Channel Pro 12/04/2003 01:18 AM

Scott Karren, the Channel Pro weblogger, writes his ideas of what the industry loses when retailers don't do their job. Great ideas and an interesting weblog. Subscribed! I love this blog for a few reasons. One, it establishes the Channel Pro as an authority in channel development. Two, he practices conversational marketing techniques. He links to people (he linked to me) and then adds some value onto that. How did I find this site? In my referer logs. First rule of getting traffic on your blog? Link to people!
