gzip vs. bzip2 vs. rzip

gzip vs. bzip2 vs. rzip 04/09/2004 04:00 PM

For a short article in the June issue of Linux Magazine, I needed to compare the relative performance of gzip, bzip2, and rzip. I used a 180MB mbox file, consisting of my non-spam e-mail from last month. (I know, it's only one test and doesn't represent how the tools will work on other data sets.) command cpu time new size ------- -------- -------- gzip 17.63 sec 87 MB gzip -9 23.26 sec 87 MB bzip2 -9 114.90 sec 76 MB...

More on RSS and gzip compression

More on RSS and gzip compression 01/04/2004 06:58 PM
Ted Leung follows up to my post from yesterday with more about RSS and gzip compression.

“So I’ve been looking at the statistics, and it’s not looking good out there folks,” Ted writes. “As far as gzipped feeds go, about 10% of the feeds in my NNW (about 900) are gzipped.”

RSS Bandwidth and Gzip compression

RSS Bandwidth and Gzip compression 01/03/2004 04:35 PM
There are several ways to cut down on the amount of bandwidth your RSS feeds use.

The very best way is to make sure your server returns 304 Not Modified responses. (See HTTP Conditional Get for RSS Hackers for more details.)

But today I’m talking about another method (which should be used in addition to conditional Get): gzip compression.

The idea is simple: the server compresses the feed before returning it to your newsreader. This means less bandwidth is used because fewer bytes are transferred.

One of the nice things about this is that if a given newsreader doesn’t support gzip compression, a server will return an uncompressed feed, so you’re not locking anybody out. But it turns out that lots of newsreaders do support gzip compression, so it really is worth the effort. (Ted Leung has been maintaining a list of which newsreaders support it.)

Today I (finally) turned on gzip compression for my feeds. (Here’s a handy page you can use to
check for gzip compression on any URL.)

Since my feeds are generated by PHP, I used Dean Allen’s super-easy instructions for turning on gzip compression. If your feeds are static files (which is probably the best choice) then you can probably use Apache’s mod_gzip or mod_deflate.

Can GNU ever be Unix?

Can GNU ever be Unix? 07/30/2004 05:14 AM
When AT&T balkanized its Unix holdings in 1993, two different companies ended up walking away with pieces of the original Unix. Novell originally bought it all, then decided to keep the Unix source code and sell the Unix trademark -- the name, in other words -- and the Single Unix Specification standards to the X/Open Company. The Open Group, as it is now called, has since learned to use these assets profitably by offering qualification testing and certification for operating systems. If your OS meets certain requirements, passes the qualification tests, and you pay the fees, you get to call it Unix. Should GNU/Linux get certified?

In Bed with Unix

In Bed with Unix 02/10/2004 02:51 AM
I picked up a copy of O’Reilly’s Learning Unix for Mac OS X Panther the other day. I’ve only really read through the first few chapters but it’s interesting stuff. Before Apple jumped into bed with Unix, and OS 9 died a slow death, my knowledge of Unix and the command line amounted to precisely bugger all, and, more significantly, it scared the bejesus out of me (where’s the icons? where’s my desktop? what did I do??). Those days have now gone though, and I’ve become really impressed at the flexibility and power of the Unix system. The other day I set up an alias in my .tschrc file to connect and download a remote MySQL database — woohoo!
