Making OS X useful

Making OS X useful 03/13/2003 10:22 AM

This article on taming the dock looks like the solution to my frustration with OS X. I arrange my dock in much the same way shown here, with my favorite apps on one side, and the running apps on the other (though, still on the default dock), but I'm constantly hitting the wrong icon when the dock ballons up on mouseover, and I can never remember where exactly I need to point to launch an app.

I'm giving this a go and seeing how it works out. Funny how it looks a little bit like the windows start bar, isn't it?

Making IM Even More Useful

Making IM Even More Useful 02/19/2004 01:27 AM
IM in the Corporate World

"Today, IBM's IM users average about 3 million messages per day, up from 2.5 million messages per day in 2002. The company has also seen a 4 percent reduction in telephone use, and a reduction in the load on its e-mail servers.

IBM employees communicate primarily with each other, but can also communicate with certain applications. For example, Reuss-Caton says there are several apps, including a dictionary and the corporate directory, to which users can send IM queries and receive responses. For example, if Reuss-Caton queries the database with an employee name, it would return all the employee's details, including presence awareness information telling her whether that individual is online." Making RSS Scale

Making RSS Scale 09/06/2004 10:26 AM
I've been meaning to write about this since I saw a one-page article on the subject of RSS clogging websites' bandwidth in NewScientist back in June. But it wasn't until I saw this Slashdot story on the same subject that I knew I had to get my thoughts down. A lot of sites are suffering from a big problem — they are being systematically hammered by RSS newsreaders for new material at regular intervals. When I first came across RSS around two years ago and did some reading up on it, it sounded like another interesting protocol for a nonproblem. I wondered what was wrong with just refreshing a "What's new?" page. (I have a natural scepticism towards new and exotic protocols.) Nonetheless, after RSS established a niche in the realm of informing us, rolling news style, of new network content, I recognised its usefulness in this situation. I did still feel that its design was suboptimal, no matter how many thousands of bloggers now relied on it.

Making the Mind. "The general outlines of how genes build the brain are finally becoming clear, and we are also starting to see how, in forming the brain, genes make room for the environment’s essential role. While vast amounts of work remain to be done, it is becoming equally clear that understanding the coordination of nature and nurture will require letting go of some long-held beliefs."

Comparing photo slideshow computer applications, Thomas E. Weber writes for the Wall Street Journal, “Those using an Apple computer won’t need to agonize over which slideshow program to choose. Apple’s excellent iLife package ($49; included with new Macs) is all they’ll need. Users can construct slideshows in the package’s easy-to-use iDVD program or move slideshows from iPhoto into iDVD for burning onto a disc. For more effects, the iMovie video-editing software can add panning and zooming motion.” [Aug 17]

Making people look bad 05/12/2004 11:27 AM
Wired News has a great story by Mark Baard about the skilled make-up artists who create moulage, incredibly realistic injuries on people for emergency response training and exercises.
"The wounds' realism (deep, bleeding gashes and amputations, oozing blisters and burns) help get the rescuers' adrenaline going, by fostering empathy with the actors who portray disaster victims."

Making the News

Making the News 05/12/2004 08:27 AM
The murder of Nick Berg was horrible. He seems to have been a good-hearted man who went to Iraq because he wanted to help rebuild the country. But why is it the top headline in newspapers around the country? If the Iraqis had murdered a civilian hostage, the media certainly would have paid attention, but I doubt it would have been the lead story. After all, Berg's going missing on April 9 wasn't deemed newsworthy. Had the Iraqis murdered a hostage by beheading him, the savagery of the act would have made the story more newsworthy, especially in comparison...

There's a new Star Wars commercial making the rounds, this one includes several of Hasbro's latest '03 toys that have just now begun to hit retail. Among the highlights are Anakin and Dooku Speederbikes, Flying R2, and Mace Windu (Total Control). If you collect television spots, this will be one to watch for. I've seen it a couple times now, if you stay tuned (or tooned) to Nickelodeon and/or Cartoon Network, you shouldn't have trouble picking it up. Thanks to Garah for the heads up.

Making the new reality 04/29/2004 12:01 PM
From Chris Nelson's blog: The following is what one of the Bush administration's representatives told journalist Ron Suskind, regarding their philosophy behind the administration's actions and their relationship with journalists. I'm quoting from an Air America Radio interview with Suskind: Suskind: He says, you know, "You, Suskind, you're in what we call the 'reality-based community'" — that's actually the term he used. I said, "The WHAT?" He says, "The 'reality-based community'.". He said, "you all believe" — now let me see if I can get this right — "You all believe that answers to solutions will emerge from your...

Making the Most of the Blogosphere

Making the Most of the Blogosphere 12/19/2004 03:36 PM

I finally found my notes from last month's talk at the Internet Librarian conference. It was really Greg's show, and he did a fantastic job talking about how to make the most of the blogosphere from an information foraging perspective. (His Powerpoint presentation is here.) He sent me his slides ahead of time, so I knew he had covered all of the bases. Therefore, I decided to talk about the flip side of the coin, making the most of the blogosphere for your library's blog. Here's the abbreviated version.
