Vendor-facilitated Donations 12/20/2003 10:54 PM

Just saw this image at Boxes and Arrows. It's like a regular donate-via-PayPal-to-keep-this-site-alive button, but it goes directly to the web host, who says, "Because you're donating directly through DreamHost, rest assured that your donation will only be used to pay for this site's hosting fees. The site owner won't be able to run off and spend your donation on DVDs, fine steak dinners, or anything else completely unrelated to their web hosting bill!"

Kinda interesting.

That is all.

Tethered to your hardware: don't get
leashed by your vendor!
07/29/2004 01:11 PM
Siva Vaidhyanathan, the author of the brilliant copyright/tech book The Anarchist in the Library, has a guest-editorial on Engadget today about "tethering" -- using technological measures to ensure that all the aftermarket goodies (coffee for your coffee-maker, music for your iPod) come from the same company that sold you the original hardware. It's easy to understand why hardware companies love tethering -- it's a license to screw their locked-in customers out of titanic sums of money -- but that's exactly why smart customers need to reject tethered products.
So we looked on with enthusiasm at the new pressurized personal coffee makers. They push hot water through a sealed “pod” filled with a precise measure of coffee. It was neat, slick, well-designed, and promised a strong, good, dependable dose. It’s the same technology that supplies those surprisingly good coffee available from coin machines in public spaces in Europe.

After a half-hour of debating the pros and cons of such a radical “format shift,” we left without one of these cool new machines. We opted out because these specialized “pods” are essentially “tethered” to this brand of coffee maker.

What if we hate the coffee that the company supplies for the maker? What if the company goes out of business? What if they raise the prices of pods? We would no longer order pounds of unpadded coffee from Peet’s in Berkeley or run across the street to the deli for an emergency brick of cheap coffee. And my favorite New York coffee supplier, Oren’s on Waverly Place, would no longer get my business.

Microsoft vs. Linux vs. vendor lock-in

Microsoft vs. Linux vs. vendor lock-in 09/04/2004 03:29 PM
One of the big reasons enterprise IT users eye Linux hungrily is that it offers a chance to break the ties that bind them to Microsoft. It's bad business to rely on anything, whether it's a truck or an operating system, that can only be repaired by one supplier. Indeed, one of Microsoft's big sales advantages when PCs were just starting to become popular was that it freed companies from hardware vendor lock-in by offering an operating system that would work with PCs and peripherals made by many companies. Now we need to ask how we can keep from getting locked in by Linux vendors. There's simply no getting around the fact that, from the vendor's point of view, customer lock-in is wonderful no matter what product that vendor sells.

Delphi XM Roady 2 Reviewed

Delphi XM Roady 2 Reviewed 07/02/2004 11:19 AM

delphi_roady2.jpg imagePC Magazine gushes about the Delphi XM Roady 2, an iPod-sized XM satellite radio receiver that fits easily into your car but can be just as easily removed and used elsewhere. Although the sound quality will be better if you hook up a wire to your stereo, the Roady2 comes with a built-in FM transmitter to make the connection as simple as possible. Of course, it won't do you much good if there aren't any stations on XM you like, but if you're already paying the $10 a month for the service, a pocket-sized all-in-one device will make a great option.

The Delphi Team: Why We Blog

The Delphi Team: Why We Blog 05/07/2004 04:52 AM
Secrecy was the norm, to prevent an agile competitor from "scooping" an idea and bringing it to market first. But today, development tools and operating systems are so unimaginably complex that nobody can turn on a dime to scoop anything. There are so many major platform milestones on the horizon that it's pretty obvious where the bulk of the tools work must go. I mean, seriously, does anyone really believe that a Delphi toolset for the "Whidbey" .NET 2.0 platform could not support generic types? Generics are a given, or die. So are many other platform artifacts.

A great insight into today's IT industry. Of course for niche players, secrecy will often still be the norm, because it's at the fringes that the really interesting stuff is done.

Delphi Readers Choice Awards

Delphi Readers Choice Awards 08/03/2004 06:01 PM

Although I've flirted with other languages, all of my shareware applications (HomeSite, TopStyle, FeedDemon) were coded using Borland Delphi. One of the great things about Delphi is that there are so many excellent third-party components and tools available, many of which were just honored in Delphi Informant Magazine's 2004 Readers Choice Awards. Since I get a number of emails asking which tools I use, I figured I'd highlight some of the winners that I rely on.

TopStyle and FeedDemon both use the excellent Express Bars and ExpressQuantumGrid component suites from Developer Express. Developer Express is one of few companies whose products I would buy without even trying them out - they're that good.

I use FinalBuilder to automate the creation of each TopStyle and FeedDemon build, and I wouldn't live without it. Likewise, I wouldn't live without AQTime, which I rely on for locating performance bottlenecks in my code.

Notably absent from the awards is the superb InnoSetup installer. Even though InnoSetup is free, I gladly donated to the developer since his work has saved me a lot of headaches.
