NewsGator 1.3 Tightens Integration with Microsoft Outlook and Adds Newsgroup Support

NewsGator, the Premier News Aggregator for Outlook, Allows Users to Subscribe to Syndicated RSS News Feeds, and is First to Add Support for Newsgroups within Outlook

Denver, CO - August 5, 2003 - NewsGator 1.3, a new version of the popular news aggregator for Microsoft Outlook, was announced today by NewsGator Technologies. NewsGator retrieves news from news sites, weblogs, and other information sources that support the RSS syndication format, and automatically integrates the news items into Microsoft Outlook folders. In addition to RSS feeds, NewsGator 1.3 adds the ability to subscribe to NNTP (Usenet) newsgroups, the first tool of its kind to provide this capability within Microsoft Outlook.

The continued growth of RSS (Rich Site Summary) news syndication feeds makes NewsGator an extremely powerful way to stay abreast of rapidly changing information. Adding additional information sources such as newsgroups to NewsGator 1.3 further enhances this capability, bringing more business information into Outlook without driving users elsewhere to subscribe or search for it.

Version 1.3 also adds many frequently requested features to NewsGator, including tighter folder integration and support for multiple Outlook profiles. Tighter folder integration makes mapping folders to subscriptions easier, and support for multiple Outlook profiles helps corporate users access important information when on the road and disconnected from their Exchange server.

Further enhancing NewsGator’s offline support is the ability to compose new posts offline, which is a significant benefit for corporate users. Users can now compose new posts while offline and disconnected, and then post them later when they have a live network connection.

"The new support for newsgroups within Version 1.3 demonstrates NewsGator's leading edge capabilities for multiple information sources," said Chris Pirillo, president of Lockergnome. "This feature combined with the new offline posting support makes NewsGator the perfect information management tool for consumers and corporate users alike."

NewsGator users can monitor the ever-growing number of information sources supporting RSS syndication. News can be sorted, organized, grouped, or searched in countless ways, and features like offline reading make this information readily accessible at any time. NewsGator 1.3 works with Microsoft Outlook 2000 or later, and is available immediately from http://www.newsgator.com. Pricing is $29 (U.S.) per copy, with quantity discounts available.

NewsGator 1.3 is a news aggregator which runs inside Microsoft Outlook, and retrieves news from news sites, weblogs, NNTP (Usenet) newsgroups, and other information sources that support the RSS syndication format, and automatically integrates the news items into Microsoft Outlook folders.

About.com, the Web's largest content destination, recently created more than 400 RSS feeds, covering each of their content areas. Including these feeds in NewsGator's feed wizard will expand the reach and visibility of these feeds to NewsGator users. "We're very excited to be partnering with NewsGator Technologies to include our wide range of content feeds within NewsGator," said Ron McCoy, CTO of About.com. "We believe that publishing our content this way, combined with the ease-of-use and corporate reach of NewsGator, will increase the visibility of our content to a new audience and make it easier for our current audience to keep up with the topics in which they're interested."

NewsGator, the Premier News Aggregator for Microsoft Outlook, and the MySmartChannels Enterprise Weblogging Server Give Users Seamless Access to Important Business Information

DENVER, Colo. -- Sept. 3, 2003 -- NewsGator Technologies and MyST Technology Partners announced a partnership today to provide users with access to MySmartChannels directly from NewsGator, a news aggregator that runs in Microsoft Outlook. MySmartChannels is a business weblogging platform that allows anyone to securely publish information, and invite colleagues and business partners to subscribe to and collaborate on it. NewsGator 1.3 enables users to subscribe to MySmartChannels and other RSS-based syndicated news feeds and have important business information sent directly into their Outlook and Exchange server folders. These tools, used together, are a powerful combination because they allow teams to publish and subscribe to rapidly changing information with the tools they already use.

The first result of this partnership is the delivery of a NewsGator plug-in for publishing content to MySmartChannels, available today from http://www.newsgator.com/plugi ns. This plug-in allows users to securely post content to specific channels directly from Outlook, eliminating the need to use a separate publishing tool. "Making it easy for workers to contribute content is an important factor in maximizing the benefits of an enterprise weblogging platform like MySmartChannels," said F. Andy Seidl, co-founder of MyST Technology Partners. "Integration with NewsGator makes both knowledge contribution and consumption from within Outlook literally as easy as using e-mail - easier, actually, since there's no spam." Using MySmartChannels with NewsGator, enterprise users are able to subscribe to channels that are relevant to their work objectives, increasing awareness of important information and increasing productivity.

RSS (Rich Site Summary) News Syndication is an emerging method of staying abreast with rapidly changing information, and these feeds can be generated in many forms by MySmartChannels. When combined with NewsGator to bring these feeds into Outlook, a uniquely powerful solution emerges. "NewsGator and MySmartChannels is a revelation," said William Stow, chairman of Tsunamin Corporation. "For the first time in my career, I am able to see into the activities and news from all parts of the company.

MySmartChannels provides the information channels for each company department, team or individual to post their activities and discussions, and NewsGator provides the up-to-the minute news feed in my Microsoft Outlook folders."

NewsGator users can monitor secure feeds from MySmartChannels, in addition to the ever-growing number of information sources supporting RSS syndication. DENVER, Colo -- Aug. 26, 2003 -- New content from IDG's leading brands Computerworld, InfoWorld, Network World and PC World are now available inside Microsoft Outlook, NewsGator Technologies announced today. As a result of a new partnership with IDG, NewsGator users can now access valuable news and information from over 50 new RSS feeds. These new feeds are included in NewsGator 1.3's new feed wizard, allowing NewsGator users to easily and seamlessly find and subscribe to new content. The addition of these feeds is the latest in a series of announcements designed to add important and productive content for NewsGator users, while at the same time making the content easier to find - all without having to leave their working environment to search for it.

NewsGator 1.3 is a news aggregator which runs inside Microsoft Outlook, and retrieves news from news sites, weblogs, NNTP (Usenet) newsgroups, and other information sources that support the RSS syndication format. NewsGator automatically integrates the news items into Microsoft Outlook folders for users to access immediately or at a later time.

These leading IDG high technology publications have recently created RSS feeds in an effort to push valuable news and editorial content to their users in an unobtrusive manner. Including these feeds in NewsGator will expand their reach to thousands of additional readers. "Partnering with NewsGator Technologies is an important step for us," said Chad Dickerson, CTO and Columnist at InfoWorld, an IDG company. "As NewsGator continues to expand into the corporate market, partnering with NewsGator Technologies is natural for us to extend the visibility of our content to more enterprise IT readers within their existing Microsoft Outlook environments."

With IDG on board, NewsGator users now have easy access to useful high technology news and developments inside Outlook. As NewsGator expands its reach in both the corporate and consumer markets, and as more sources support RSS syndication, users will be able to take advantage of a variety of rich content across a number of industry sectors. News can be sorted, organized, grouped, or searched in countless ways, and features like offline reading make this information readily accessible at any time. Latest Version of NewsGator, the Premier News Aggregator for Microsoft Outlook, Adds Support for Multiple Machines and Synchronization with Other Platforms and Mobile Devices, In Addition to Powerful Developer Tools and Other Capabilities.

LAS VEGAS and Denver, CO -- January 7, 2004 -- NewsGator 2.0, a new version of the popular news aggregator, was announced today by NewsGator Technologies at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. NewsGator retrieves news from news sites, weblogs, newsgroups, and other information sources that support the RSS or Atom syndication formats, and automatically integrates the news items into Microsoft Outlook. RSS (Rich Site Summary) News Syndication is an emerging method of staying abreast with rapidly changing information and allows users to sort, organize, group and search news in multiple ways. Using NewsGator, users can read content offline making information readily accessible any time.

Major New features in NewsGator 2.0:

  • NewsGator Online Services integration -- NewsGator 2.0 includes tight integration for the new NewsGator Online Services platform, which allows users to take advantage of powerful subscription synchronization capabilities. With this move, NewsGator extends beyond just an application, becoming a platform allowing developers to build a variety of new applications.
  • Arbitrary RSS extension support -- NewsGator 2.0 is the first mainstream content aggregation tool to support arbitrary extensions in RSS or Atom feeds. Users or publishers can add arbitrary content into their feeds, and NewsGator is now able to process this custom data. Users can modify the rendering of items, add columns in Outlook, or build custom extension processors in .NET. For example, an extension can be written to add an appointment to the Outlook calendar when a meeting is announced in a feed. The possibilities are particularly exciting for businesses looking to integrate workflow applications with RSS and Atom feeds.

There are many other new capabilities and features in NewsGator 2.0, including support for enclosures and attachments in feeds, customizable rendering, and much more. And while NewsGator has always been tightly integrated with Internet Explorer to allow easy subscription to new feeds, NewsGator 2.0 enhances this integration with single-click subscription to feeds from a web site.

NewsGator 2.0 works with Microsoft Outlook 2000 or later, and will be available on January 19, 2004 from http://www.newsgator.com. Pricing is $29 (U.S.) per copy, with quantity discounts available.
