earlier revelation
that George W. Bush was photographed wearing military ribbons he never
earned, arguments were made against the charge, in some cases based on
the
political
leaning of the source. The Air Force Personnel Center and the Air
Force Historical Research Center both state that Bush never recieved
the award displayed in the photograph. The
Un

04/27/2004 01:56 AMWhen I have posted particularly anti-Bush or partisan views, many
people have complained in the comments or by email. Some of the most
intelligent comments on my blog have come from conservatives and some
of the most stupid from liberals. In order to keep some of the more
intelligent conservatives involved in the dialog, I've tried to
generally steer clear taking strong stands on the war in Iraq and on
the presidential election.
I thought about it and I've decided that this is stupid. I don't
want Bush to be re-elected and I think going into Iraq was wrong. I
will try to be thoughtful about how I make my assertions, but I'm
going to stop pretending that I'm non-partisan. I hope that
Republicans or people who do not agree with me will continue to read
this blog and disagree openly with me. I have just decided that it's
getting too close to the election and there is too much at risk for me
to just sit here and act neutral.

The Gilmore Commission warned that
American institutions,
including academe, are losing momentum in responding to the
threat of terrorism . In its fifth and final report , the group charged that the federal government has failed to create comprehensive security
standards.
"By the time clear definition and objectives are provided, many
communities and states may have embarked on paths that are measurably
different from those adjacent to them and potentially inconsistent
with a national approach."
The Commission was initially
known as the Advisory Panel to Assess Domestic Response Capabilities
for Terrorism Involving Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Bi-Partisan Environmental Improvement?
04/24/2004 01:55 AM
A new study (in a biggish PDF) from
PRI states that most
environmental indicators in the United States have improved
dramatically since the 1970's regardless of the political party that
controls the White House. Notably: "CO (Carbon monoxide)
levels were the lowest recorded during the past 20 years"
(EPA, 2002, pg 48), ambient lead levels have fallen 98% between 1976
and 2002 (pg 46), and sulfur dioxide has fallen 70% since 1976 (pg
44). (Mostly) Happy Earth Week, right?
