A Puppy Called "It"

A Puppy Called "It" 09/10/2004 06:24 PM

One of the handful of English-language books that is easy to buy in Japan is Dave Pelzer's bestselling A Child Called "It".  Waiting for a train I managed to skim through most of this popular work and it has come back into my mind today as I take care of Roxanne, Alex's 5.5-month-old cousin.  Mr. Pelzer says that, as a child, his mother made him live in the garage and eat scraps of food while his siblings were dining on lobster at the table.  It made me wonder what kind of book dogs would write it if they could.  "While the rest of the family chowed down on $200 of natural foods from the Whole Paycheck supermarket, I was nearly starved for the whole day and then confined to the floor and given one small bowl of 6-month-old dried out nuggets that had come in a bag."

Why's it called Syndication?

Why's it called Syndication? 06/17/2004 02:52 PM

Joffrey Koliante asked...

I keep asking myself what does "syndicate" mean. I would say that Syndicators are systems that make any content available as an XML feed. When syndicators syndicate content, this is called syndication.

Right ?

So why do so many blogs, especially Movable Type powered ones, write "Syndicate this site" rather than "Aggregate this site?"

The short answer is: because the original use for XML content feeds was truly syndication and the term stuck.

RSS was first used by Netscape in their My Netscape portal. Content providers would syndicate their headlines to Netscape using RSS, a file format that they invented. The acronym meant "Rich Site Summary." When RSS began being used by individuals to grab content from multiple locations for display in an aggregator, the term "Rich Site Summary started to become less and less accurate. Much of the content was not summaries at all, but rather the content in its entirety. So a new meaning for the acronym was invented: "Really Simple Syndication."

If you want the long answer instead of my oversimplification of the history of RSS, poke around the Web looking for information about Dave Winer, Netscape, and the different versions of RSS: 0.91, 0.92, 1.0 and 2.0.

One of the meanings of syndication is the distribution of content to multiple locations for simultaneous publication. So in that sense, syndication is a good term for what is occurring. However, the act of consuming the content (what the end users are doing when they "syndicate this site") is not technically syndication.

While "aggregate this site" is probably a better description, "syndicate" is in common use and probably won’t go away anytime soon. But I’d argue that neither term is very good if you want mainstream Internet users to pick up on content feeds.

HOTLINK FIRST TO LAUNCH CALLER RINGTONES
IN MALAYSIA Latest ringtone innovation
set to enhance mobile personalisation
and communication
07/23/2004 02:52 AM
Hotlink from Maxis Communications Berhad today unveiled Caller Ringtones, the industry’s first ‘ringback’ service that is set to capture a bigger slice of the thriving ringtone business. Caller Ringtones replaces the standard connecting tone callers conventionally hear on the phone with music and sound effects while they wait for their call to the Hotlink customer to be connected. With this service, callers can now be entertained as how call recipients have been kept amused via ringtones before the call gets picked up. The service, not unlike ringtones, is built on consumers’ increasing appetite for mobile personalisation and communication. [PRWEB Jul 23, 2004]

The Ringtone Label?

The Ringtone Label? 12/24/2004 12:18 PM
With the rise of ringtones, it seems that some have really taken the idea and tried to run with it. So far, certainly, ringtones have done well for some companies, but it's still not clear if it's a sustainable market, or a faddish one. There's also the fact that the industry continues to deny that file sharing of ringtones could ever be a risk -- which suggests they're only asking for serious trouble down the road. Still, the latest move is that one company has set up a record label just for ringtones. Because, already, musicians have separate labels for CDs and videos and digital downloads and... wait a second... no they don't. Most musicians basically sign deals with a single recording label to handle all of their musical endeavors, so it seems sort of strange to have an entirely separate label for ringtones only. For recording labels that don't already include this in their standard contracts, they will soon -- and then this new "label" will be out of luck. Of course, the reality is that it's just a way for this company to get a little extra publicity for these "unique" ringtones. Considering that part of the reason ringtones are so popular, though, is that people recognize the songs they represent, it makes you wonder if people really are that interested in songs that are designed just to be ringtones. Seems sort of like a niche market within a niche market.

Ringtone Hype

Ringtone Hype 12/11/2003 01:13 PM
I've written before about the wireless carriers' current obsession with ringtones. It appears to be a booming business, to the point that others are muscling in on the carrier's turf by offering "non-authorized" ringtones or even the ability to make your own ringtones (for a fee, of course). While it may be good money in the short run, I still don't see how it's sustainable. As mobile phone platforms are increasingly open and standardized, ringtones will go through the same Napsterization process, where many will be available for free. Meanwhile, I still don't understand what's wrong with the good, old-fashioned vibrate mode that doesn't bother anyone around you. However, the article does mention the growing popularity of the silent ringtone that we wrote about last week. Apparently, it costs $2. Incredible. We've reached the point where people are willing to pay to have their mobile phone not ring. Maybe the next step is letting people pay to have someone else's mobile phone not ring. "My goodness is your ringtone annoying. Here's $2. Go buy yourself a silent ringtone."

Recording Industry's Next Trick?
Killing Ringtone Sales

Recording Industry's Next Trick?
Killing Ringtone Sales
05/25/2004 02:49 PM
It's like watching a bad movie over and over again, each time a somewhat promising market starts to open up for the recording industry, they all do their best to kill it. Earlier today we saw how they're looking to kill the promising market for immed iate live recordings of concerts, but now it looks like they may be killing off ringtones. For the last year or so, ringtones have been the surprising revenue generator for both mobile phone carriers and the recording industry, and despite plenty of warning and predictions that this market couldn't last, the recording industry isn't known for their ability to understand how technology changes will impact their business over time. Already we've seen applications like Xingtone take the industry by surprise by daring to let users make ringtones out of music they've legally purchased - and it won't be long until ringtones are easily downloadable directly to mobile phones via a Napster-like application (if it doesn't exist already). Still, the music industry sees money, and are increasing the royalty rates they charge for ringtones, making them more expensive. In fact, ringtones that are mere snippets of songs cost much more than actually downloading the full song from any of the various download music stores out there. Of course, all this will really do is drive more people to investigate alternatives like Xingtone, and make the "market" for selling ringtones disappear quite quickly. This was going to happen eventually no matter what, so maybe, by raising prices, the industry is just speeding up the process.
