Memphis is extremely cool

Memphis is extremely cool 03/14/2005 05:51 PM
On my way back from Memphis, where I spoke at the Rhodes College Institute on the Profession of the Law. This is an annual event (well, my speaking there is not an annual event, but you understand), and I was struck not just by the College (which seems plucked from Oxbridge), but by the seriousness with which 100 lawyers spend a morning thinking, and arguing, about real issues. Maybe its something about the pure Tennessee air (my mom's from Chattanooga), or the distance from Washington, DC. But it is such a pleasure to be able to talk about these issues with people thinking about them genuinely.

Winamp has extremely critical
vulnerability

Winamp has extremely critical
vulnerability
08/27/2004 01:56 PM
A vulnerability has been reported in Winamp, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system.

The problem is caused due to insufficient restrictions on Winamp skin zip files (.wsz). This can e.g. be exploited by a malicious website using a specially crafted Winamp skin to place and execute arbitrary programs. With Internet Explorer this can be done without user interaction.

An XML document in the Winamp skin zip file can reference a HTML document using the "browser" tag and get it to run in the "Local computer zone". This can be exploited to run an executable program embedded in the Winamp skin file using the "object" tag and the "codebase" attribute.

NOTE: The vulnerability is reportedly being exploited in the wild.

The vulnerability has been confirmed on a fully patched system with Winamp 5.04 using Internet Explorer 6.0 on Microsoft Windows XP SP1.

Graphics card names are the bitter end

Graphics card names are the bitter end 09/06/2004 12:50 PM
GRAPHICS CARDS ARE STARTING to bother me. No, not because they are expensive, not because they are cheap, and not because I don't have a good one, it is a problem with names. There are too damn many names for each chip line, and each bi-annual refresh, there seem to be twelve more models. XT, GT, PE, FU, they are multiplying faster than rabbits, and faster than I can keep up with.

To be fair, there are good reasons why there are nineteen different flavors of each chip, this week, and it is one of the things I hate most in the world, marketing. Yes, those little critters are at it again, and we all pay the price. Know the memory width of an ATI 9800XT? How about when you step down to a 9800Pro? Does it drop when you go to the non-Pro? How many pixel pipes does a NVidia 6800Ultra have? It goes down when you go to the normal, non-suffixed 6800, but where does the 6800GT lie in this scheme?

Ask the Captain

Ask the Captain 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

Ask the Captain: If you're an airplane junkie, then this column over at USAToday should be great fun. It's a Q an A written by Meryl Getline (she wrote this book), an airline pilot. In it, she answers some fun questions about the ins and outs of flying a $100 million airplane:

Her answers are always fascinating and well-written. She has a personal blog as well: From the Cockpit.

And for the truly obsessed, Jeremy Zawodny pointed me to this site this morning: the O fficial Boeing 777-200LR Flight Test Journal. Great reading about something I would never expect a blog about.

From Sun Feb 18th, 2001 to Sat Mar 23rd, 2002 Kuro5hin was host to an anonymous author who chose the nom de plume of Captain Ledford. This author serialized a set of stories in the K5 diary section that remain to this date as some of the best fiction K5 has ever seen. With the advent of the K5 fiction section I thought it would be befitting to bring back to the foreground these stories, so that they could be seen by the wider K5 audience. I am not Captain Ledford, nor was I able to get in touch with him or her. But I am a big fan.

"Sky Captain" opens

"Sky Captain" opens 09/18/2004 04:35 PM
Xeni Jardin: Stephen Holden of the NY Times reviews Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, which opens this weekend nationwide.
If nothing else, "Sky Captain" is a landmark in computer-generated imagery. Its actors cavort through an entirely synthetic, computerized retro-styled future world that fuses Art Deco, Futurism, Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" and the spirit of the 1939 World's Fair into an all-purpose eve-of-World-War-II environment extrapolated into a science fiction limbo. Its cheerfully ominous scenario of a planet invaded by robots that systematically set about stripping the earth of its natural resources resonates in any number of ways without seeming strident or promoting a political agenda.

But the visual elegance of the movie, which opens today nationwide, comes at a price. If its ethereal evocation of a pulp fiction future-past eclipses almost any other sci-fi franchise in subtlety and imagination, its shadowy washed-out color is a far cry from the robust hues of a movie like "Raiders of the Lost Ark." The monochromatic variations on sepia keep the actors and their adventures at a refined aesthetic distance, and the bleached, tinted face of Mr. Law is simply not as real a screen presence as the ruddy, flesh-and-blood Harrison Ford. At times the film is hard to see. And as the action accelerates, the wonder of its visual concept starts giving way to sci-fi cliches.

Captain Grunge Flies Again! 04/14/2005 03:50 PM
Captain Grunge Flies Again!
The first trailer for Gus Van Sant’s “Last Days” has just been posted (with sub-titles). “Last Days” is inspired by the tortured final days in the life of Kurt Cobain. Of the film, Van Sant says, “There are a lot of hypotheses about what happened, but I don't know of any full eyewitness account, just tiny momentary ones. Everyone has a different opinion, but there's not one true, authoritative account. He was just kind of missing." Much like the Cobain biography “Heavier than Heaven,” the film takes the stance that Kurt, who has grown increasingly uncomfortable with his fame, is resigned to his death, not accelerated into it by a chain of events concluding with his suicide. Leonardo look-alike Michael Pitt (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) plays the lead role, with Asia Argento playing the Courtney Love-like character. And here’s a good article about the film.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow 05/07/2004 10:36 AM
Wired has an article about a guy named Kerry Conran that is making a robot garage movie and it's now going to become a big screen movie. The movie called Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was produced in a guy's house living room converted into a sound stage and blue screen. The movie is like an old timey black-and-white serial set in Manhatten in the 1930's where a mad scientist and his evil robots do some dastardly deed (a sort of Buck Rogers or captain Proton kind of thing). What's cool about it is this guy just started out with a few of his friends in his house with a living room converted into a blue screen and basically made a movie. No sets, just all amature computer generated sets. He used a mac and off the shelf video editing software. He hooked up with some big time Hollywood types and managed to get Angelina Jolie, Gweneth Paltrow and Jude Law to star in the movie and more computing power and more animators, etc. Now it's going to be a big screen movie in 2004! Wow that must have been a real dream come true for this guy! Anyway, some people seems to think that the movie stinks, so it's being delayed, but it's still cool that a garage movie crawled up, saw the light and made it this far! All you hopeful amateur garage videographers out there might just hit it big like this guy did!
