Dead Grandmother Syndrome

Dead Grandmother Syndrome 03/13/2003 10:22 AM

"A student's grandmother is far more likely to die suddenly just before the student takes an exam, than at any other time of year," writes biologist Mike Adams. "The problem is clearly far more pervasive than most people realize." (03-10)

Deceased grandmother sued for piracy

Deceased grandmother sued for piracy 02/05/2005 10:11 PM
The American recording industry has filed a lawsuit against an 83-year-old grandmother, accusing her of illegally trading music over the Internet as "smittenedkitten." The lawsuit was filed by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) more than a month after Gertrude Walton died in December. The group named Walton as the sole defendant in a federal lawsuit, claiming she made more than 700 songs available for free on the Internet. Walton's daughter, Robin Chianumba, lived with her mother for the last 17 years and said her mother objected to having a computer in the house. "My mother wouldn't know how to turn on a computer," Chianumba said. She said she faxed a copy of her mother's death certificate to record company officials several days before the lawsuit was filed, in response to a letter from the company regarding the upcoming legal filing. A RIAA spokesman said that Walton was likely not the smittenedkitten it's searching for. "Our evidence gathering and our subsequent legal actions all were initiated weeks and even months ago," said Jonathan Lamy. "We will now, of course, obviously dismiss this case."

RIAA Sues Deceased Grandmother

RIAA Sues Deceased Grandmother 02/05/2005 09:14 PM
The recording industry's latest assault on file sharing has netted an unusual suspect: a deceased great-grandmother from West Virginia. In a lawsuit filed in January, the RIAA accused 83-year old Gertrude Walton of sharing over 700 pop, rock and rap songs under the alias "smittenedkitten." What the RIAA didn't know is that Walton had passed away in December.

Greg Linden took a look at Yahoo! MindSet and said the following: I'm surprised to see this focus on sliders. They aren't particularly useful. They fail the grandma test. Most novice users will not use or understand the slider; they just want the top result to be useful. It's not even that useful to power users since sliders fail to provide the level of granularity they need. First off, I think he missed the point. This isn't about producing a...

Grandmother Takes On The RIAA; Won't Pay
For Grandson's Actions
05/05/2004 09:27 PM
We've tried to highlight this in the past, but not many people are discussing one of the major problems with the RIAA's sue-by-IP address approach. An IP address doesn't tell you who was actually using the computer and set up a file sharing network to share unauthorized files. Now, one grandmother is fighting back against the RIAA for that very reason. Her grandson used file sharing networks, but she's the one who gets in trouble for it. AOL cut off her internet access and the RIAA plans to file a lawsuit against her, but have made her the same generous offer they make to everyone: pay up $3,500 and they'll leave her alone. However, this grandmother will have no part of it. She says that, first of all, she doesn't have the money, and it's not fair to hold her responsible for her grandson's actions. In fact, she had already gotten him to stop downloading songs, but no one realized that the file sharing system was still running in the background. Still, it does highlight the fact that the RIAA's tactic of simply suing by IP address means they're going after people who didn't actually break the law.

Remember when emails were flying around about the sulfnbk.exe virus? It began on the internet, spread like wildfire, and eventually made it all the way to the cable news channels. It turned out, of course, sulfnbk.exe wasn't a virus. It's a program that backs up long filenames created by Windows, but few people bothered to look it up before deleting it. As a result, the more unfortunate victims were puzzled to find some DOS programs had rendered many of their file names illegi~1. Less a computer proficiency deficiency than an aversion to independent thought, the sulfnbk syndrome seems to repeat itself with unfailing consistency. The story you're about to read is just the latest permutation.

"Judith Scott (born 1943), a fifty-five year old woman with Down's Syndrome, has spent the past ten years producing a series of totally non-functional objects which, to us, appear to be works of sculpture, except that the notion of sculpture is far beyond Judith's understanding. As well as being mentally handicapped, Judith cannot hear or speak, and she has little concept of language."

A friend of Boing Boing says, "I've just learned that she died last night."

Early bird syndrome linked to genetic

Early bird syndrome linked to genetic
mutation
03/31/2005 11:46 PM
David Pescovitz: In this week's issue of Nature, neuroscientists report that they've implicated a single gene mutation in Familiar Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome (FASPS), or "early bird syndrome." Often, people who have this condition have no choice but to crash in the early evening and wake up long before dawn. From National Geographic News:
"The net result is you can feel very isolated," (FASPS sufferer Susan) Middlebrook said. "Who wants to party at three in the morning? Nobody I know, and I'm not headed to the local bar to see who's still there." Instead, she quietly cleans the house, makes breakfast, or cuddles up with a book.

About three-tenths of a percent of the world's population lives like this, including two of Middlebrook's sisters, her daughter, and her mother. "Their whole clock is shifted," said Ying-Hui Fu, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco...

The researchers are not yet certain how the gene mutation works to shift people's sleep time. But laboratory experiments suggest mutation slows the activity of a protein called casein kinase I delta (CKIdelta). "The next step is to figure out why," Fu said.

Dead pixels instead of dead trees

Dead pixels instead of dead trees 12/22/2004 01:49 AM

I love books, I love browsing stacks, I love libraries, I love Powell's in Portland, I like collecting books, I always have a stack nearby to read, I love looking through picture books, and I love books even though I didn't really become much of a reader until the end of my college years (I never read for fun until then). Plunging into the Internet fed my book addiction further, as I had to read dozens of computer classics to get up to speed and stay ahead of the curve. Every computer desk I've had until recently was flanked by bookshelves loaded with titles.

Earlier this year, I remember hearing Cory Doctorow give a talk about how ebooks were going to rule the world and folks would abandon the printed page for the laptop screen. I thought it was a good talk, but I felt the thesis was a bit ahead of its time. There's really no comparison between curling up with a book and a blanket in front of a fireplace, versus trying to read thousands of words on a screen.

Last weekend I was doing some house cleaning and I kept finding stacks of books. A stack next to the reading chairs. A stack on the coffee table. A stack beside my bed. All these stacks contained books I bought in 2004, but never read. Some, I got halfway through, but even more I got maybe ten pages in. A few I never even cracked open.

When I think back to the last three books I enjoyed, they were all heard on my iPod, while on a road trip. I can't recall the last book I finished in my hands.

I'm going to take a holiday trip soon to a fairly remote location where there's not much to do besides read. I'm going to sit and read the only book I've wanted to read this year, and I have a feeling it might just be one of the last dead tree books I read for a long time.

As much as I didn't agree with Cory back during his E-tech talk, I'm finally realizing it's coming true in my own life. I read thousands of words everyday on my monitors and I rarely take time to read anything on the printed page, and there's no sign of reversal on that trend. The scariest thing for the bookfan inside me is that I don't think it's bad thing, either.

Long live the ebook. Long live the audiobook. So long, dead trees.

Dead Like Me - Dead or Alive? 02/01/2005 09:59 PM
In television these days, there is hardly a show that doesn’t have the blood flowing or the boobies showing. It is hard to find a show that makes it on wit alone. Till a few weeks ago, I thought I had found the saving grace with Showtime’s original show, Dead Like Me. I guess a few executives didn’t share my opinion. The fight is far from over though. In the past shows would have died…

I bet GarageBand.com takes off in the absence of MP3.com, they were like a better version, though they require users and musicians to actively participate for it to work.

The Slashdot trolling phenomena make up a bizarre and complex subculture found on the popular Slashdot technology website. It is a mixture of juvenilia, sarcasm, deliberately bad jokes, tasteless nonsense and highly developed and artistic attempts to provoke outraged responses from other forum users, or amuse them. Folk Process defined and expanded upon 07/29/2004 05:05 AM
Hot on the heels of the attack on Woody Guthrie's memory (in the form of a lawsuit against political parodists who used his "This Land is Your Land" as part of a Flash movie) is this wonderful piece on what Pete Seeger called "the folk process" -- the way that traditional art has been made by ripping, mixing and burning the art that preceded it.
Guthrie may be right that Pete Seeger was the first to coin the term "folk process", but the process of oral song-transmission through through variation and selection was being analyzed even before Pete Seeger's birth in 1919. And the process itself has been operating as long as there have been songs. The folk process was described, though not so named, by Cecil Sharp in 1907: "[Development of a folk song] involves the three principles of continuity, variation, and selection."

Here're my running notes from danah boyd's Re venge of the User: Lessons from Creator/User Battles at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego.
The response is an attempt to "configure the users" -- constrain behavior to acceptable behavior with messaaging, kicking people off, etc.

This won't work: you can't tell a hacker not to hack. These kids are social hackers. You can stop some bad behavior, but you chase off your best users, too.

Dating doesn't happen because you're in a dating context. Dating arises out of real contexts.

Taking away fakesters didn't make Frienster more real. Friendster is unreal because people never remove their friends, even if they never see them (the exception is when you break up, ironic, because ex-lovers are strong ties!).
