Backup Hard Drives: CMS ABSplus And
Maxtor OneTouch Offer Easy Backup And
Easy Storage
12/19/2003 11:33 AM
Both drives do a fine job of simplifying backup and providing external storage space. The ABSplus is a focused backup device that's easy to use, right out of the box, for backup and restoration, whereas Maxtor's cheaper and quieter drive is better for people who want extra disk space and more backup flexibility. Does DNA have a backup in RNA?

Does DNA have a backup in RNA? 03/23/2005 02:53 AM
Cory Doctorow: Becky sez, "According to a report in the journal Nature, one plant appears able to revert to genetic code that doesn't contain a mutation that its parents had, i.e., it appears to have some kind of backup. The authors of the paper theorize that the backup may reside in molecule RNA somewhere, and that stress may trigger the reversion. If this turns out to be the case in other species--like, oh, say, humans, and the lead author suggests that could be so--not only will we have to rewrite the genetics textbooks, but locating the RNA backups and/or learning how to trigger them might be a new route to cure of diseases with a genetic component." P2P backup

P2P backup 03/27/2005 12:43 PM
I think I'm missing something obvious, but why can't I find a p2p backup system that lets me and a designated buddy swap storage space? I'll give my pal, say, 5GB of storage on my computer if she'll give me 5GB on hers. My computer is pretty much always on, and so is my buddy's. All we need is some basic sw for letting us designate the directories we want kept up to date and for making the p2p connection. Maybe a little encryption and compression. Neither of us guarantees 24/7/365 access, multiply redundant raid arrays, or whatever, but it...

Now You Need A Backup For Your Backup

Now You Need A Backup For Your Backup 06/29/2004 04:05 AM
At a personal level, I now have learned that it pays to have multiple backup systems, because if you just have a single backup system, it's almost guaranteed to fail at the same time as your main system. Apparently, that's true on a larger scale as well. Following Akamai' s recent problems, some are suggesting that companies not rely on one partner for DNS resolution, but bumping things up to rely on two separate providers, just in case one of them can't actually keep their systems running -- even if that's part of their promised services. Apparently, redundancy now means "paying twice as much."
