This class is meant to generate a link that displays information about it in a pop-up when you click on a text icon adjacent to the link. A description paragraph will drop down underneath the link. The paragraph can subsequently be closed by clicking the same icon. This capability is an excellent alternative for when you do not want to use Flash mouseover descriptions and leave it up to the user to decide whether or not a link is worthy further investigation.

Accessibility Checker Recommendations

Accessibility Checker Recommendations 06/17/2005 07:17 PM

Among TopStyle's validation tools is integration with the Bobby accessibility checker, but I've received word from Watchfire that they've discontinued their free web-based Bobby service. So, I need to find a replacement, hopefully in time to include in TopStyle 3.12.

Personally, I've found the accessi bility checks built into CSE HTML Validator Pro more than sufficient for my needs, but I realize some TopStyle customers would like integration with a free web-based checker as well so I'd like to continue to offer this feature.

Since I don't have much experience with these tools, I'm open to recommendations from TopStyle users. Note, though, that whatever service I integrate with must be able to accept the HTML document via HTTP post (ie: application/x-www-form-urlencoded) rather than just through a public URL.

Email Personality Checker

Email Personality Checker 11/03/2003 03:36 PM
I use Eudora as my email client which has the amusing (if mostly useless) feature of noticing if I'm using any bad words, and warning me that I might be "flaming" someone (it also notes if incoming mail appears to be burning hot as well). Basically, if you put in a curse, it notices it. This is a slightly different take on the ever-popular spell-checker and grammar-checker offerings. We've already seen some other variations on the technology, such as the "Bullfi ghter" application that would help you cut buzzwords out of your documents. Now, however, a researcher in the UK is apparently working on something of a "personality checker" for your email. You first indicate what sort of personality you want to display ("why, I'm sort of morbid today, let's make my emails dark") and then it will watch what you write and suggest alternatives to more properly convey the proper tone. Consider it your very own personality coach. Apparently, we feel the need to automate even our own personality these days. Since studies have shown that spell checkers make good spellers worse, does that mean this new tool will give us less personality?

A University of Pittsburgh study reveals that using the spell-check button can create problems for writers and editors who rely too heavily on the software. While a spell-checker can identify some misspelled words, it is not always so reliable when used to correct grammatical errors.

Windows XP System File Checker

Windows XP System File Checker 04/12/2004 02:21 PM

scannow sfc: Here's a handy Windows XP feature I had never heard of until today.

From a command prompt, type "sfc /scannow" and Windows will look through all its system files for ones that don't match up with the others (if, for instance, a third party app replaced them with older versions). If it finds any, it will replace them off the install CD.

The main reason for using this utility is when you suspect there may be a problem with a Windows XP system file.

Perhaps you get a dialog box appear informing you of a problem with a .dll file, or your program will just not load! It is therefore worth checking to see if there are any corrupt system files using scannow sfc.

Additionally, this is a fantastic article on the utility. Well-written, well-researched, and full of debugging information should you have a problem. We need more tech support articles written like this one.

"sfc" stands for "System File Checker."

Spam Domain Checker for Outlook

Spam Domain Checker for Outlook 05/28/2004 12:39 PM
A growing percentage of the 2,000+ spams I'm receiving every day come to false names at my domain, evident.com. Here's a VBA script for Outlook that searches the selected entries in a folder and moves bogus ones sent to that domain into a folder of your choice. To use it, create a folder to receive the putative spam; I'm calling it YOUR_SPAM_FOLDER in the script, but you should change it to whatver yours is called. Also, replace "domain.com" with the domain of your mail, and be sure to specify the addresses to domain.com that you want to accept. (And watch...
