Modelling and Mining of Network Information Systems
http://www.maths tat.dal.ca/~mominis/index.html

A library, no matter how vast, is limited by the efficiency of its cataloguing and searching system. So it is with the World Wide Web. With the emergence of the Web as the pre-emininent information storage and retrieval system, the need for better organization and searching systems has become pressing. Between the pin-prick of desire for information and the fruition of a screen full of relevant links lies the latency of intelligent web search. We are getting used to seeing the world through the Web; the time has come to see every world as a web. Every collection of interlinked data (a networked information space) can be organized and searched like the Web. Networks of phone calls, networks of financial transactions, networks of social interactions can all be analyzed by the techniques used for the Web.

The secret to successfully searching the web has been known to the builders of better search engines. On the web, as in other networked information spaces, the required information about the information lies in the link structure. Understanding this link structure mathematically and being able to translate this knowledge into applications is the point of this project. The theorems, tools and techniques of graph theory are at our disposal. This has been added to Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog and Bot Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology crosses many disciplines in research and encompasses a wide range of applications. The technology can be integrated with a system that combines aerial (or satellite) photography, census figures, crime statistics and other information and then overlaid on a highly-detailed interactive map. This Topic in Depth covers some of the current uses of GIS and resources for learning more about the technology.

City governments have found various uses for GIS technology, (1) including helping firefighters avoid closed roads when navigating through New York City. Moving even beyond Earth, GIS was also used to gather planetary geography and geographic characteristics in the rover mission to Mars (2). Visitors to this website can learn more about Martian GIS and visualization tools and find image viewers for the advanced and beginner users of GIS that allow you to get a closer look at Mars, Venus, the moon, or your hometown here on earth. The Earth Satellite Corporation (3) provides this overview of some applications for satellite imagery combined with GIS technology. This website, Your Internet Guide to Geographical Information Systems (4), provides general information on GIS, sample images, and ways to get software, training and data. To gain some perspective on the expansion of GIS, the GISlounge provides links to where you can learn more about the history of GIS (5), and describes the history project, which includes a "critical history" that asks the question, "What were the precursors and ways of understanding the world that provided the conditions of possibility for GIS to emerge in the forms that did?" To give you a better sense of the rapid growth that has occurred in the field of geographic information and steps being taken to ensure that a coherent view emerges, visit this website of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS)(6) [From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

A comprehensive portal covering all protocols and sources related to text mining and web mining. Text mining is about looking for regularities, patterns or trends in natural language text, and usually is about analyzing text for particular purposes. Inspired by data mining, which discovers prominent patterns from highly structured databases, text mining aims to extract useful knowledge from unstructured or semi-structured text. Text Mining is a cross-disciplinary field including, but not limited to:

* Information Extraction(IE)
* Natural Language Processing(NLP) and Computational Linguistics(CL)
* Machine Learning(ML)
* Information Retrieval(IR)
* Data Mining(DM) or Knowledge Discovery from Databases(KDD)
* Information Management and Visualization

After "Dating Mining", Try a Little "Reality Mining"
http://www.techreview.com/articles/wo_pentland033104.asp

At the MIT Media Labs, the Human Design research group is working on "reality mining" projects that use commonplace wearable technology to identify a company's de facto organization chart (as opposed to the theoretical and often-ignored one on the wall). The group is using two approaches: The first provides an Expert and Collaborator Locator, which uses speech recognition technology to generate profiles of individuals based on the words they use in conversations; the second offers Collaboration Tools, which makes it possible to query a database of employee profiles of interests, skills, or even recently used vocabulary, in order to find people who might work well together. The researchers say: "We expect that by aggregating this information, interpreting it in terms of work tasks, and modeling the dynamics of the interactions, we will be better able to understand and manage complex organizations." There are privacy issues, of course, and here the key is to make the system transparent and to allow employees to scrutinize their bosses' behavior. This could be interesting.

Abstract:

The concept of Web-based Information Retrieval Support Systems (WIRSS) is introduced. The needs for WIRSS are shown by a detailed case study of existing research article indexing and citation analysis systems, such as Curent Content, DBLP, Science Citation Index and CiteSeer. The objective of WIRSS is to build new and effective research tools for scientists to access, explore and use information on the Web, which may lead to improved research productivity and quality.

But if you want to find truly cutting-edge health care technology, you can turn to the small, rural hospitals. In the wards and in the labs of cash-strapped rural hospitals, non-proprietary software is quietly making its presence felt.

Discover free of charge this new text watch platform "Pertinence Information Network (PIN)". PIN allows you to define your focuses of interest, then sends you e-mail alerts (NewsAlert bulletins) listing the latest publications relevant to these focuses of interest. You may choose a language from the list of 12 available languages, and keywords to target your focuses of interest (common names, proper names, phrases, sentences...). You can then select sources from a pool of several thousands – from classic publications (medias, press releases, news agency reports) to information portals, researchers' sites or individual news brokers (via controlled registration). All the documents in the NewsAlert messages are accompanied by a static, automatically derived summary. It is also possible to summarize each document automatically produced dynamically and where the selected keywords are highlighted. Moreover, you have at your disposal an online "personal folder " (shareable with other users) where you can classify and archive documents under customized categories and subcategories. Those documents can be selected articles from NewsAlert but also local files, notes, or the URL of a web page. You can also create a diffusion channel restricted to a group of selected users. PIN also proposes a customized information feed in which you can dynamically summarize all the articles. Look up our site for other interesting functionalities.

O*NET Online

O*NET Online - Occupational Information Network
http://online.onetcenter.org/

O*NET, the Occupational Information Network, is a comprehensive database of worker attributes and job characteristics. As the replacement for the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT), O*NET will be the nation's primary source of occupational information. O*NET is being developed as a timely, easy-to-use resource that supports public and private sector efforts to identify and develop the skills of the American workforce. It provides a common language for defining and describing occupations. Its flexible design also captures rapidly changing job requirements. In addition, O*NET moves occupational information into the technological age. As the basis for enhanced product development, the O*NET database can serve as the engine that drives value-added applications designed around core information. It provides the essential foundation for facilitating career counseling, education, employment, and training activities. The database contains information about knowledges, skills, abilities (KSA), interests, general work activities (GWA), and work context. O*NET data and structure will also link related occupational, educational, and labor market information databases to the system. This will be added to Business Resources 2005 Internet MiniGuide.

Semantic Web Content Accessibility Guidelines for Current Research Information Systems (CRIS)by A. Lopatenko
http ://eprints.osti.gov/cgi-bin/dexpldcgi?qry1123892181;12

Abstract:
The most exciting challenge for CRIS is to create a service for research information which should be wide-spread, distributed and actual like Google, but at the same time structured, trusted, with a complex search and navigation similar to today CRIS application. The core technology for such a "new" CRIS is the semantic web technology to integrate database contents with HTML and XML web pages for being provided to the research interested public. One (at the moment the best) possible way is to use RDF (Resource Description Framework) which is also recommended by the W3 consortium. Faking Out Social Network Systems

Faking Out Social Network Systems 01/02/2004 06:19 PM
It's no secret that I'm not a huge fan of many of these social networking services. I have nothing against them, I just don't see how they'll ever make much money - because they're mostly based on two ideas that have trouble standing up to scrutiny: (a) people with rich social networks have no problem subsidizing those with weak networks and (b) you can easily define relationships in a binary way. However, I hadn't even considered other issues with social networks, such as the ability to use them for questionable purposes. For example, this article, which focuses on the security weaknesses of some of these sites briefly mentions a very sneaky use of such a system: virtual identity theft. For example, you create a profile at LinkedIn, pretending to work at a competitor. Then, you sit back and intercept any messages that are intended to go that competitor and use them for your own business instead. Of course, in this case it depends on others in your network not noting that you're lying, but the number of people I've heard of using Linked in who have made connections with people they barely know makes this completely plausible.
