things are still not done. I hope we can get GPRS connectivity down

My hands are shaking. I've been typing non-stop all week.
I can't think straight. I haven't had a good night's sleep in days.
I can feel the adrenaline rush coming on. It's the same rush you get

It's odd: how did being fun become so serious?
I'll be so glad when this is over.

Kernel Panic? More like Major Pain in
the Ass...
Kernel Panic? More like Major Pain in
the Ass...
11/05/2003 05:18 AMPardon the pun, but it was a bad day yesterday. After a month with the
new PowerBook and a week running Panther, it suddenly developed a
kernel panic about 15 seconds after boot-up. I tried restarting in
numerous ways to try and get going. Eventually I managed to boot in
safe mode (holding down shift upon re-boot) and backed up any recent
files, so my data was safe. The intention was then to re-boot using
the Software Install DVD, but this resulted in another kernel panic -
arrgh!
After a couple of calls to Apple Support, it became clear the machine
would have to go back to them to fix. What totally puzzles me is how
it failed so suddenly and so catastrophically. There was no indication
that anything was going wrong. I had Panther running fine for a week
and it seemed really stable. In fact, until yesterday the machine had
never crashed and I'd never even had to force-quit an application.
It's the first time since using Mac OS X in all it's incarnations that
I've ever experienced such a failure.
Anyway, the DHL man is coming tomorrow to take the PowerBook away.
Hopefully, I should get it back within a week. I know all computers go
wrong (and some more than others) but the whole episode has certainly
dented my perception of Mac OS X. What ever happened to rock-solid
UNIX stability?

Interview with GNU/Hurd developer Marcus
Brinkmann
03/19/2005 02:51 AMMarcus Brinkmann is a developer in the GNU/Hurd and Hurd/L4 projects
(which aim to create a microkernel-based alternative to the monolithic
Linux kernel) and recently wrote the code that allowed the execution
of programs for the first time on Hurd/L4. He now provided a new
interview (Coral cache) answering questions on the Hurd architecture,
driver support, security, micro-kernel performance and more. He also
gives his opinion on the free software philosophy and the software
patents, and he reveals how he learnt programming on a C64 while he
was in the elementary school. In the end he is asked to provide some
advice on how to learn programming and he explains how experienced
developers can help the Hurd project, without of course omitting to
give some clues about the future of the Hurd, which looks very
promising after the new development.

My First C Compiler
My First C Compiler
01/09/2004 09:56 PM
I accidentally googled into this short page on
History
of PC based C-compilers which made me think about my first C
compiler: Aztec C
on Apple II. I was among the first wave of programmers who
cut their teeth on
PCs instead of minicomputers and state-of-the-art in PC software
has risen high enough
to make programming in assembly tedious.
So I just bought a copy of wonderfully thin K&R book which took
only an hour to
read and started writing in C. I really liked it but I wasn't
comfortable with
the idea of using it for production code yet because size and speed
still reign supreme
then. But it was fine for writing tools.
I think the first program I wrote with Aztec C was a double-hires
image editor because
that was when Apple IIc was about to be released and there were no
tools to edit double-hires
images. It was sweet not having to worry about registers and
being able to write
almost English like code (well, it does when compared to assembly
code).
Oh boy, time sure flies.
