Is it time to face the music?

Is it time to face the music? 08/21/2004 12:47 PM
Whichever the answer, RealNetworks made the mistake of allowing a comment section on its petition, which was quickly deluded with pro-iPod comments. And at 49 cents, they are obviously losing money on every download. While Apple sits back and watches this one-sided battle play itself out, it has little reason to worry. Even with Harmony, RealNetworks offers little, if anything, that iTunes doesn't, and it’s been proven time and time again that Apple has built the better music service. And until this week, prices were largely the same, as long as you fail to include RealNetworks’s subscription fees. I mean, RealNetworks has been playing catch-up all along, and now they're taking shots at the founder? It just doesn't make sense. RealNetworks doesn't have its own music player to promote, and, seemingly, has no real reason to fight, other than a slight increase in download market share. There's no doubt that a 50-percent price cut will boost sales, but it will likely be a temporary spike — most music fans will return to their service of choice once the price goes back up. And with iTunes set to launch throughout Europe in October — and possibly Japan and Australia shortly thereafter — there’s not much that can knock iTunes off its pedestal… especially not an petition and a misguided advertising campaign. Perhaps it's time to really face the music.

The facts behind the "Get the Facts" ad
campaign
06/24/2005 09:35 PM
Commentary: Like many readers, I find Microsoft's Get the Facts (GtF) ads repugnant, especially when they appear on sites dedicated to Linux and open source software. I understand that such organizations' editorial and ad sales staffs operate independently, meaning neither side tells the other what content it is or isn't allowed to carry, but I still don't like it. Happily, however, the bogus GtF ads may not be around much longer.

A bushy-tailed morning in the quest for truth : MemeTank and dKosopedia This morning, I wondered - where's the update to (the deceased) Steve Kangas' mighty liberal FAQ ? "Update?", thought I, "Well, this attempt ran out of steam" Then..."Ah, a Wiki !" Then, "well, isn't truth the point ?...shouldn't it be Bipartisan, or multipartisan ?" Daily Kos was just sniffing (May 28th) along that trail, it seemed....partway : "We hope the dKosopedia will become the progressive-political version of the Wikipedia, a political FAQ so to speak" Would the "Dkosopedia" benefit from a less partisan stance ?

But, the MemeTank rocks -with it's bestiary of Liberal/Progressive, Right Wing, and "other" memes and the (MemeTank's) "Meme Development Project....This section is for people who want to invent new memes and try to encourage professional journalists to start using them."

The moment calls for a rough grilling by a special interest group eager to sink your standing with voters. (Liberals, too.) This would appear to be the logic of tonight's White House press conference. But that logic went bust.
