Playfair is back!

Playfair is back! 05/11/2004 03:34 AM
Playfair is the iTuens music player that removed the restrictions from the music you bought from Apple. It was hounded off Sourceforge by Apple's lawyers, and then it relocated to a server in India, only to be removed again at Apple's behest. Now it's back a third time, still hosted in India, with a new name: "hymn" (Hear Your Music aNywhere).
playfair has been renamed to hymn (hear your music anywhere) and is back online with the legal backing of FSF India. It has been updated with the latest FairPlay code from VideoLAN.

PlayFair And The iPod Lock-In 05/20/2004 07:13 PM
Where Apple makes its money is from the iPod -- and the iPod is the only device you can play music bought at the iTunes Store on. Hymn/PlayFair removes that link between iPod and iTMS, making it possible to buy music on the store while using it on a competing player. That lack of tie-in is what makes Hymn a threat to Apple. Apple takes Playfair bullying to India

Apple takes Playfair bullying to India 04/16/2004 11:50 AM
Playfair is the program that removes the use-restriction wrapper from your iTunes Music Store tracks. It used to be hosted on SourceForge, but they chickened out when Apple sent them a bullying note demanding takedown under the ludicrous and loathesome DMCA. Playfair moved to a host in India, which apparently has no such law, but now Apple has nastygrammed the Indian hosts too, resulting in another takedown while the Indians get some legal advice. Gee, Apple, you really can't buy publicity like this. Well, you can. But why would you want to? Link (via /.)

05/11/2004 01:22 PM

Apple will no doubt launch its lawyers again, but the useful "PlayFair" software, which let purchasers of iTunes Music Store songs remove Apple's restrictions, is back online. It has a new hosting site and name: Hymn. Understand: You still have to have bought the songs in order to use this, and the songs are still tied to the unique ID created when you purchased. This is about fair use, not "pirating" other people's work.

Got a Mac, so shut up already

Got a Mac, so shut up already 02/10/2004 02:51 AM
I just installed OS X on the used G4 I bought for my father-in-law. Having installed Windows scores of times — probably more than a 100 in my lifetime — and having installed Linux a few times with mixed success, I was interested in how the Mac would do. Answer: Pretty durn easy. As easy as Windows XP, and definitely easier than Red Hat or Mandrake. And then the fun began. The UI effects are real crowd-pleasers. It matters to me that the droplets of water play catch as you wait for something to install. Let's not say I'm superficial....

Shut Up! "The EU has requested that member states come to a standstill at noon today to observe a three-minute silence for victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami. Is this just a shallow, belated gesture - or the best way to show our solidarity?" Blake Morrison of the Guardian asks. There's also an interesting "History of Silences" at the end of the article.
