Some Thoughts on Travelling for Work

Some Thoughts on Travelling for Work 03/17/2005 03:49 AM
We have all been there. Well, maybe not all of us, but I am sure that the majority of readers have considered a job travelling (full travel, I'm not talking about you wussies who drive to the next city once a month for a meeting). There are, however, many issues with travelling full time, some obvious, some not. Here are some thoughts to keep in mind if you ever travel for work.

Ask K5: Meeting locals when travelling 09/22/2004 02:34 AM
While travelling I like to meet locals. In some countries this is easy, I look different and peole approach me. In other countries people are more reserved. What can I do in the latter case?

Introducing Aunt Tillie to RSS

Introducing Aunt Tillie to RSS 04/09/2004 03:56 PM
This morning a story on RSS newsreaders appeared in the Personal Tech section of my local paper. The title was A simple program to 'refresh' the news; the byline was The Washington Post. I'm keenly interested in how the story of RSS is being told to Aunt Tillie, so I deconstructed this one with some care. ...

What website is Aunt Tillie really on? 04/09/2004 03:56 PM
Last Friday I visted CoreStreet, a company whose ingenious approaches to large-scale credential validation and physical security I mentioned in my Permissions on the edge column last fall. While I was there, CoreStreet's president, Phil Libin, who blogs at vastlyimportant.com, showed me a neat gizmo intended to help Aunt Tillie understand where she's really going on the web. Consider this screenshot: ...

Aunt Tillie's OS X adventure

Aunt Tillie's OS X adventure 03/06/2004 01:57 AM
In a pair of recent essays< /a>, Eric Raymond tears into the open source community -- rightly so -- for its failure to deliver software that Aunt Tillie can use. He's spot on. One of his comments got me wondering, though:
If the designers were half-smart about UI issues (like, say, Windows programmers) they'd probe the local network neighborhood and omit the impossible entries. If they were really smart (like, say, Mac programmers) they'd leave the impossible choices in but gray them out, signifying that if your system were configured a bit differently you really could print on a Windows machine, assuming you were unfortunate enough to own one. [Eric Raymond: An Open-Source Horror Story]
As it happens, I'd never tried printing to a Windows XP queue on my home network from my Mac, and I wondered how well those Mac programmers Eric talks about handled that case. So here, for your Flash viewing pleasure, is Aunt Tillie's OS X Adventure. ...

dalek.jpgIn a telling remnant of iron-fisteded imperial tendencies, armed police took down a friendly robot who was taking a lovely stroll near the UK's Parliament building. The Dalek, hand-built and operated by one Ken Meikle, was built as a project for his brother, who has Down's Syndrome. Apparently the remote control robots are fun to drive on the sauce:

'They are quite difficult to operate, and the huge dents in our living room wall are proof you should never get behind the controls of a Dalek with a drink in you.'

Linux to Solaris Diary

Linux to Solaris Diary 03/14/2005 05:56 PM
On February 25, 2005, I undertook to transfer a nontrivial software development/deployment setup from OS X and Linux to Solaris 10. I have lots of old Unix and recent Linux experience, but none with Solaris. This entry will serve as the permanent home for my technical diary documenting the learning process, which I shall update in-place. A9's Search Diary 09/21/2004 02:46 AM
So the big search noise last week was A9's launch of their new search interface. I got a quick glimpse of some of the thinking behind it at Foo Camp when talking with Udi (A9's founder and CEO) and some other folks. What I didn't notice until now (and haven't read much about) is this "diary" feature they offer. According to the on-line help: What is the A9 Diary? The A9 Diary is a feature that allows you to easily...
