Credit Card Breaches Not Only Old Hat,
But Also Declining
06/22/2005 02:17 AMIn the wake of CardSystems
outra
geous 40 million customer data exposure and its
seemi
ngly quaint predecessors, the Monday morning quarterbacks are
weighing to explain what we've all known for a while now:
security breaches of this kind are nothing new,
it's just that we're finding out about them more. In fact, the
evidence shows that the incidence of
credit card fraud is actually
declining. Turns out that banks and merchants have been
tackling this issue for some time, and actually reduced illegal credit
card purchases by $100 million between 2003 and 2004. The industry
still has a ways to go (after all, $788 million worth of fraud is
still a serious problem), but at least there are signs of improvement.
The same can't be said of identity theft, which the BusinessWeek story
says is slightly on the rise and probably fueling the misperception
about fraud in general. Of course, identity theft is a much more
damaging crime with fewer solutions than a bunch of fake charges on
your credit card. And, scammers don't need to swipe tons of data to
cause widespread problems. Just a couple hundred thousand people's
info will do.

this summer, though motorists shouldn't expect dramatic decreases at
the pump, the Energy Department said Tuesday.
The declining state of diner dining
The declining state of diner dining
07/19/2004 07:57 PMA rather disheartening article in the week's New York magazine, The
Death of the Diner: What’s killing the cheeseburger deluxe?
Sad but true: The classic New York coffee shop is fading fast. The
recession is part of the problem; according to Pan Gregorian
Enterprises, a purchasing co-op for coffee shops and diners that has
475 local members, revenues were down 20 percent last year. But there
are other forces at work, from skyrocketing rents to Starbucks
hegemony, that are forcing coffee-shop owners...into retirement.
Some of my favorite Manhattan places to eat are diners: in Tribeca I
frequently had lunch at the Square Diner (at the intersection of
Leonard and West Broadway), closer to my hood I like Joe Jr's on Sixth
Avenue and the Bonbonniere on Eighth Avenue. And whenever I go to the
movies up on 34th Street, I like to have a pre-theatre meal at the
Cheyenne, at Ninth Avenue and 33rd Street.
One of the things I missed most about the east coast during my tenure
in San Francisco were diners, and one of the highlights of my first
return to New York City after an absence of many years was our trip to
the now-demolished Jones Diner. It might have been the final push I
needed to move back east. I've never tasted a better grilled cheese,
or a worse cup of coffee, or had a nicer time on a cold winter's
afternoon with the light fading into a cruddy January grey. There's a
lot I could do without in this world, but I can't say that I want to
live a life without my diners.

Are supergiant oil fields declining
faster than replacement?
Are supergiant oil fields declining
faster than replacement?
04/09/2004 03:57 PMNYT. Oman's oil production
decline on its large fields couldn't be stopped by new
technology. This is another indicator that
Hubert's
peak may be correct.
Oman's oil problems are relatively recent. Annual production
rose from 1980 to 1997, when the 35-year-old Yibal field began to
decline. Two engineering papers written last year by Petroleum
Development Oman officials show that production in Yibal has fallen at
an annual rate of about 12 percent for six years; that is more than
twice the normal rate of 5 percent in the region.
Perhaps more ominously for the world's oil outlook, he added
that the failure of Shell's horizontal drilling technology in Oman
suggested that even advanced extraction techniques "won't bring back
the good old days." In the case of the Yibal field, for example,
Shell and Omani oil engineers and auditors have expressed concerns
that a technique Sir Philip said would recover more oil not only did
not do so, but also increased the amount of water in the extracted oil
to as much as 90 percent of the total volume, increasing production
costs.

01/28/2004 10:17 AMMicrosoft founder Bill Gates expressed his vision Wednesday for a
future in which advanced software will seamlessly connect personal
computers with mobile phones, watches and other small devices. The
software, which Gates predicted would be widespread by the end of this
decade, would also be smart enough to let users know if and when it
should alert them -- and on which device -- with new information such
as weather forecasts or sports scores.

Dvorak foresees a helpless Mac community

Dvorak foresees a helpless Mac community
in the face of a spyware attack
12/24/2004 12:31 PMIn a recent online PC Magazine article "Panic Over Spyware" by
everyone's favorite curmudgeon, John C. Dvorak, the purposes and
implications of spyware are explored. On the final page of the story,
Mr. Dvorak writes, "The national media pay little attention to the
problem, and many mainstream media tech writers are Mac users, so they
don't get it. Who knows what will happen when the Mac community gets
hit? They feel immune, and are for now. But when they get hit, there
will be few resources to help them, since the antispyware community is
busy with all the PC-related problems."
I have a hard time disagreeing with the predicted outcome of John C's
"what if?" scenario: we probably aren't prepared because we have yet
to truly be challenged. But is a spyware attack on the Mac platform
even likely?

05/13/2004 05:19 AMThe Economics of Open Source Hijacking and Declining Quality
of Digital Information Resources: A Case for Copyleft by Andrea
Ciffolillihttp://opensourc
e.mit.edu/papers/ciffolili.pdfAbstract:The economics of information goods
suggest the need of institutional intervention to address the problem
of revenue extraction from investments in resources characterized by
high fixed costs of production and low marginal costs of reproduction
and distribution. Solutions to the appropriation issue, such as
copyright, are supposed to guarantee an incentive for innovative
activities at the price of few vices marring their rationale. In the
case of digital information resources, apart from conventional
inefficiencies, copyright shows an extra vice since it might be used
perversely as a tool to hijack and privatise collectively provided
open source and open content knowledge assemblages. Whilst the impact
of hijacking on open source software development may be uncertain or
uneven, some risks are clear in the case of open content works. The
paper presents some evidence of malicious effects of hijacking in the
Internet search market by discussing the case of The Open Directory
Project. Furthermore, it calls for a wider use of novel institutional
remedies such as copyleft and Creative Commons licensing, built upon
the paradigm of copyright customisation.
