Ronco Spray-On Usability

Ronco Spray-On Usability 04/09/2004 03:58 PM

By focusing on Aunt Tillie (the archetypal nontechnical user), Raymond is ignoring the actual depth of the problem. It’s easy to say, The open source community needs to do better, we need to create software Aunt Tillie can use. But they’re so far away from this right now that even an expert like Eric Raymond can’t figure out how to use their software.

The strange thing is that there are many successful open source PHP projects with rich UIs such as phpBB or any of the Nuke variations that are used by non-programmers every day. To ask C hackers - especially those who have no respect for users - to write usable software is perhaps a bit too much. I think PHP coders do this better.

Uniform Application In The Spray &
Metering of Agrichemicals

Uniform Application In The Spray &
Metering of Agrichemicals
06/01/2004 02:26 AM
Positive Displacement pumps create a pulsating flow and hydraulic shock due to the reciprocating nature of their stroking action. This pulsation makes the uniform application of product in spray and metering applications extremely difficult and can potentially damage the entire pumping system. Blacoh’s SENTRY® Pulsation Dampeners remove virtually all system shock, enhancing all-around performance, reliability, and uniformity of fluid flow in spray and metering applications. This sounds phony to me, but there may be something to it, so read on: Alan R. Hirsch, M.D., director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, created Timeless View based on more than 25 years of research on human sensory function. He recently presented a study on Timeless View to the American Psychiatric Association’s Annual Meeting in Atlanta, which illustrated how his patent-pending blend of scents (which includes pink grapefruit and others),…

Hot pepper spray reverses "permanent"

Hot pepper spray reverses "permanent"
loss of smell
04/12/2004 03:34 PM
The cold remedy Zicam (which I swear by) has been under attack for possibly causing permanent anosmia (loss of the sense of smell). But a new product on the market called sinus Buster, made from capsaicin (the ingredient that makes chili peppers hot) might reverse anosmia when you squirt it up your nose.
"When my husband ordered the sinus buster over the internet I was skeptical. But I said okay I’ll give it a try. As soon as we got it I used it that night and the next day I noticed I could smell certain odors. I couldn't believe it. The first thing I smelled was my daughter coming home after a night of partying, and I could smell cigarette smoke all over her. I had to bring her coat out to the garage because the smoke odor was so strong. Then my daughter told me that’s how she always smells after going out, but I never smelled the smoke before. It's absolutely amazing," Anderson added.
I've always had a pretty bad sense of smell. Maybe I should give this stuff a try. Link

Spray AUV Starts Gulf Stream Round Trip

Spray AUV Starts Gulf Stream Round Trip 03/25/2005 02:51 PM
According to a WHOI Oceanus article, the Spray UAV started a seven week round trip from Bermuda across the Gulf Stream and back yesterday. The 6 foot long underwater robot completed it's first one-way Gulf Stream trip under remote control in September of 2004. To dive, Spray uses a hydraulic pump to move mineral oil between two bladders, changing the robots volume much like the swim bladder in a fish. Research hope to someday have fleets of similar autonomous gliders sailing the worlds oceans to collect physical and chemical data. For more on Spray, see the WHOI Spray FAQ and the Scripps Spray home page.

And like the majestic desert creature itself, the Scorpion also takes refillable liquid shot cartridges and can be purchased for around $130, if you can make it through the product copy ("Evil lurks in the darkest places.") without soiling yourself -- another great defense mechanism, let me tell you.

Not everyone has time to conduct a formal usability study, or the money to invest in a full blown usability initiative, and frankly, lots of times that might not be the best option anyway. Sometimes a designer or developer needs that one-on-one, maker-to-user interface. Gorilla Usability will show you some ways to get to know your users in a real world, out-from-behind-the-glass kind of way.

Homepage Usability

Homepage Usability 03/30/2005 05:47 PM
Product Image: Homepage Usability:
50 Websites Deconstructed by Jakob Nielsen & Marie Tahir
My rating: 5 out of 5

The book begins with a chapter of precise guidelines that serve as a checklist of the features and functionality to include on your home page. The specifics found in categories such as "revealing content through examples" and "graphic design" will quickly hook you and whet your appetite for more. These guidelines are followed up with hard statistics and an examination of the ominous Jakob's Law: "Users spend most of their time on other sites than your site." Here you'll find some interesting statistics about how various conventions like search, privacy policies, and logos are used. All this leads up to the showcase element of the book--a systematic deconstruction of 50 of the most popular home pages on the Web. The authors painstakingly pick apart each in an uncompromising autopsy of usability. Each site is graphically analyzed for its use of real estate and summarized with the frankness only found from true experts. Then each section of the home page is bulleted and analyzed for potential improvements.

Hyperlink Usability

Hyperlink Usability 05/22/2004 12:50 AM

Design Guidelines for Visualizing Links: A lot of really good guidelines for hyperlink usability that really boil down to one point: do links the way HTML was built to handle them and you won't have any problems. Ninety-nine percent of usability problems on the Net are a result of people trying to get cute.

Don't underline any text that's not a link, even if your links aren't underlined. Reserve underlining for links. Because underlines provide a strong perceived affordance of clickability, users will be confused and disappointed if underlined text doesn't have an actual affordance to match this perception.
