Steven Johnson, the guy who wrote the brilliant Emergence (a book whose lyrical description of emergent phenomena in ant-colonies inspired both my forthcoming novella Human Readable and the ants that crawl over Appeals Court, the sequel Charlie Stross and I wrote to Jury Service, which will be published as a fix-up novel by Argosy in just a couple weeks), has a new book out: Mind Wide Open: Your Brain And The Neuroscience Of Everyday Life, which he describes as:
...an attempt to look systematically at the question of what brain science can tell you about yourself as an individual. There are a number of great books that ask questions like: How did the brain evolve? Or: how does the brain work? This book asks a related, but more intimate question: how does your brain work? In what ways can science shed light on your own personality traits, emotional habits, mental blindspots or strengths? In the book I've set myself up as a kind of guinea pig for this experiment: I take a number of tests that evaluate different cognitive faculties; I do a number of explorations with neurofeedback; I help design a series of fMRI experiments on my own head. I also have conversations with some of the world's leading brain scientists, who function as guides through this amazing inner landscape.

Beyond Markets and Firms: The Emergence of Open Source Networks by Federico Iannacci and Eve Mitleton–Kelly
http://ww w.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_5/iannacci/

Abstract By Author:
Although hierarchies and markets (i.e., autonomy) have been subject to extensive study, heterarchies represent different modalities of organizing that have been little researched. Drawing on complexity theory and the main features of complex evolving systems (CES), this paper sets out to remedy this imbalance by showing that heterarchies feature highly decentralized and relatively stable interactions which are coordinated through an emergent process of parametric adaptation. Implications in terms of learning are discussed casting a new light on the delicate issue of motivation in Open Source software development.

SAX processing in Python 05/26/2004 04:20 AM
An application developer can choose any one of a number of strategies to read and use an XML document. In some very simple examples a script containing a number of regular expressions might do the job, but normally a more rigorous technique is required. The Simple API for XML (SAX) is one of the two key techniques for analysing and processing XML documents (the other is the more complicated Document Object Model (DOM)).

Next-generation e-forms

Next-generation e-forms 01/26/2004 09:11 AM
E-forms, a technology that's been around for a long time, is now a hotbed of activity. Microsoft's XML-oriented InfoPath, which shipped with Office 2003 in October, is now deployed and in use. Adobe plans to ship a beta version of its PDF-and-XML-oriented forms designer in the first quarter of this year. And e-forms veterans such as PureEdge and Cardiff, whose offerings are built on an XML core, are lining up behind XForms, the e-forms standard that became an official W3C recommendation in October 2003. MT Background Processing Limitations

MT Background Processing Limitations 09/07/2004 08:30 AM

One of the cool new things in Movable Type 3.x is that it forks processes to do stuff in the background. For instance, if you save an entry, you don't have to wait for it to rebuild. MT runs the rebuild process in the background, and the entry quietly rebuilds within 30 seconds or so of you saving the entry and returning to the menu screen.

However, this morning I was mass deleting 60+ comment spams (another great new feature: search for comments by IP). MT 3.x is automatically rebuilds the entry when you delete a comment (great improvement, BTW), so 60+ entries were rebuilding at the same time in the background.

Now, we all know that MT isn't terribly efficient with the database calls (doesn't have to be when it's write-one, read-many), so the database must have been getting hammered while these entries were rebuilding.

I made a change to another entry, tried to save it, and got this:

Got an error: Bad ObjectDriver config: Connection error: User [removed]@localhost has already more than 'max_user_connections' active connections

A small price to pay for background processing, but they probably should have trapped the error. Now I'm left wondering how many of my entries actually rebuilt, and how many died in process due to this error. Since they were being rebuilt in the background and thus wouldn't display an errror, I may never know.

The solution: Rebuild All Files. My hosting company must hate me.

A New Jersey mom who was sued for file-sharing by the RIAA has brought a countersuit for racketeering.
The Rockaway Township woman, who claims she was targeted for her teenager's school research project, is among hundreds of individuals sued by the music industry since last summer. Another 531 computer users were sued yesterday in "John Doe" suits filed in Trenton, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Orlando.

Labels are using "scare tactics (that) amount to extortion" in efforts to extract settlements, Scimeca alleges in legal papers sent to the U.S. District Court in Newark.

"They're banding together to extort money, telling people they're guilty and they will have to pay big bucks to defend their cases if they don't pony up now. It is fundamentally not fair," Scimeca's lawyer, Bart Lombardo, said yesterday. The Cranford attorney said he occasionally downloads songs for personal use and sees nothing wrong with that.

AJAX

AJAX 03/22/2005 04:58 PM

I am playing with AJAX myself but I see many problems with AJAX as the next generation DHTML application platform.  AJAX applications are more expensive to build, test, and update than traditional DHTML applications.

Frankly, I am not even sure whether current crop of popular web browsers can support AJAX because they weren't built with the expectation that a signle web page might stay up for as long as GUI applications.  When even small carefully written DHTML apps can cause enough browser resource leaks to require frequent browser restarts, I think good stable AJAX applications will be rarer than the picture recent hype paints.

And by the time engineers discover the cost of AJAX first-hand, .NET-based ClickOnce applications will look much more attractive than AJAX-based applications can ever be.

So Ajax it is...

So Ajax it is... 03/19/2005 02:31 AM
I guess I'll have to accept "Ajax" as the official term of the new breed of webapps. In Monday's Wall...

AJAX in Flash

AJAX in Flash 03/30/2005 09:01 PM

As I pointed out in my AJAX post, I think difficulties of writing AJAX make it a poor web application platform, particularly since there are easier alternatives.

Flash, for example, is a better platform for some applications than AJAX because it offers similar capabilities (i.e. XMLHttpRequest in DHTML) and comparable, if not better, level of availability along with much better graphics capability.  Flash tool developers such as Lazlo and Xamlon makes it easy to develop interactive web application.  Just take a look at this Google Maps like demo built over a weekend using Xamlon's upcoming tool.

Note that AJAX in Flash is inappropriate for web applications that manipulate DHTML DOM extensively and has a number of issues that makes it prohibitively expensive for uses beyond demos and small tightly-focused applications.  For example, you can't built PhotoShop with it without abandoning usability.

Beyond Flash, .NET looms with superior functionalities and flexibilities.  The only thing it lacks is the availability in several sense.

PHP Everywhere: Will Ajax Catch On?

PHP Everywhere: Will Ajax Catch On? 03/19/2005 03:26 AM
If you'll remember a while back, we posted something about Ajax, a new technology from Adaptive Path that combines XML and Javascript to make a new "rich DHTML application".

Now just call it "AJAX"

Now just call it "AJAX" 03/14/2005 05:25 PM
Last year we wrote about how some applications -- notably Google Mail and Suggest -- were taking advantage of Javascript plus XML-over-HTTP for richer interfaces. Now Jesse James Garrett of Adaptive Path has written a nice summary and (perhaps more imporantly) come up with a new name for the approach: "AJAX." Some CMS vendors are beginning to use AJAX methodologies, although from what we have seen mostly in a tentative way (if you're a vendor using AJAX, do tell where and how. Asynchronous communication with the server has tremendous potential to make heretofore very linear authoring and workflow procedures in a CMS much more fluid and therefore more, well, lifelike......

Why the term Ajax is useful

Why the term Ajax is useful 04/18/2005 09:55 PM

Software design patterns are useful mainly because they provide a shared vocabulary: rather than discussing the intimate details of a three layered application architecture, we say "MVC". Rather than describing an object that tracks your progress while looping over a collection, we say "Iterator".

The same is true for Ajax. While the techniques it describes have been around for years, grouping them under a single term is extremely valuable for raising the level of discussion about them. No longer will we have to explain XMLHttpRequest / hidden iframes / crazy cookie tricks in depth when discussing sites which pull fresh information from the server without reloading the whole page. Instead, we can say "Ajax" and move on to more interesting things.

Matthew Haughey says it's all about marketing. I disagree; it's about smarter and more effective conversations.
