Digital Photography Hacks: geek out with

Digital Photography Hacks: geek out with
your digital cam
05/26/2004 04:34 AM
I am no photographer, but ever since I bought my first Casio Exilim camera (I'm on my third now, and I can't recommend them enough -- small, light, easy and durable, I carry mine everywhere and always) I've found myself shooting nearly every day.

Not being a photog, I'm pretty pig-ignorant on subjects like focus, depth-of-field, ISO, and so forth.

I just scored O'Reilly's new Digital Photography Hacks, written by the inestimable Derrick Story, s geeek's geek and a photographer's photographer, whose work I've admired for years. Derrick's new book follows the form of all the O'Reilly Hacks books: 100 easy-to-digest tips and tricks for digital cams, aimed squarely at people like me, geeks who get computers but cameras not so much.

These hacks are just what I needed to start to get my head around more advanced phototaking. Passages like "The flow of traffic provides a great opportunity to add motion to your compositions. Automobiles are light-painting machines, and it's easy to put them to work for you" (emphasis mine) really did me in: automobiles are light-painting machines! Wow! Suddenly, the whole world looked different.

There are many many great hacks in this book, but my favorite is #47: Judge Image Sharpness From File Size. If you've taken a bunch of photos of the same subject and want to determine which one is sharpest, compare the file-size. Images that have more information will compress poorly, which means that the biggest files in your shoot are likely the sharpest. Keen. Link

Digital Photography Hacks Reviewed 08/06/2004 07:45 AM

gdigital_photography_hacks.gif imageWe don't normally talk about book reviews, but since Mark Goldstein's Photography Blog is one of our favorites (and we must admit a certain weakness for O'Reilly books) I think we'll make an exception as he reviews "Digital Photography Hacks" by Derrick Story. The short end? He likes it a lot, which is fairly high praise from someone who is already a photography, calling it "well-rounded and not at all shallow" and "most suitable for the Intermediate category," as well as "explicit," "concentrate," and "and."

Although I haven't read Story's book, one thing that caught my eye is that out of 100 different tips, only 13 are about Photoshop. I love me some Photoshop, but I'm more interested in learning what to do so I don't need it.

Casio Develops Tiny Ceramic Lens 08/02/2004 02:08 PM

Transparent-Ceramic-Lens-16.jpg imageCasio has developed the world's first optical lens constructed from transparent ceramics, making it possible to create cameras with optical zoom that are even thinner than existing models. Not only do the new ceramic lens have a greater refractive index (they bend light more than glass) they are also considerably stronger - important in something that gets dropped as often as cameras.

No word when to expect the tiny lens to start being used in cameras (and cameraphones), although I'm sure if you're a manufacturer Casio would be delighted to talk to you about it.
