PCs out sick more than users

PCs out sick more than users 06/25/2004 08:37 AM
The average UK PC is rendered unusable for the equivalent of around nine working days every year because the owner is cleaning up spam or fighting viruses. This is two days a year more than the average UK worker takes off as sick leave, according to Yahoo. A survey of 2,500 UK e-mail users found that 70 percent of users had been infected by a virus in the past year and 42 percent say they found it less stressful fighting their way through rush-hour traffic than finding legitimate e-mails among the spam in their inboxes. Spam is a problem for all e-mail users but some companies are hit harder than others.

Assume that when you install the program, the people in your contacts list will be notified with no further warning. Sick! Computers Make You Sick

Computers Make You Sick 09/09/2004 12:33 PM
Not feeling so good? Perhaps you should blame your computer. A new study says that three out of every four office workers have health problems because they're not properly trained to use their computer. The problems are pretty obvious: back problems, eyesight problems or headaches. As this becomes a bigger and bigger problem, the suggestion is that corporations need to be more proactive in training people on good computing and good ergonomics. Of course, none of this seems particularly new, and many companies already have ergonomics groups that make sure people are well set up to use their computer in a healthy manner. At some point, good computing practices and good ergonomics are going to be issues that people are trained in at an early age -- and not at the office. However, in the meantime, companies who want to protect their employees' eyes, back and head might want to do a better job ensuring good computing ergonomic practices.

How Many Sick Days Does Your Computer
Have?
06/23/2004 11:06 AM
A new study from Yahoo in the UK shows that the average British computer has nine "sick days", where the owner has to waste time fixing problems instead of being productive. Six of those nine days are due to dealing with spam, and the other three are from viruses. Once again, though, people are looking to their ISP to solve this problem, even if ISPs have been hesitant to do so. It's getting to the point, however, where ISPs that don't aggressively police their networks for spam, viruses and other malware may start losing customers to those that do.

Flick mosquitos or you could get sick

Flick mosquitos or you could get sick
and die
07/19/2004 01:32 AM
If you catch a mosquito feeding on you, you should flick it away rather than squashing it, lest you drive its infectious guts into your body.
The issue is reviewed in an article published this month in the New England Journal of Medicine that focuses on a 57-year-old Pennsylvania woman who died in 2002 of a fungal infection in her muscles called Brachiola algerae.

Doctors were puzzled because the fungus was thought to be found only in mosquitoes and other insects. But it's not found in mosquito saliva like West Nile virus and malaria, so a simple mosquito bite could not have caused the infection.

The article's authors concluded that the woman must have smashed a mosquito on her skin, smearing its body parts into the bite.

Note to coworkers regarding sick days 12/13/2003 10:27 AM
Fellow Yahoos, Apparently some of you have forgotten about our company's most excellent "sick days" policy. It basically states that there's no fixed number of sick days that you're allowed to use per year. You cannot accumulate sick days and they don't expire. Instead, when you're sick or have a medical obligation, you stay home or otherwise deal with it. The logical consequence of this policy, I thought, was quite simple--easy enough for a 5 year old to grasp. But...

Grouping table data by header

Grouping table data by header 12/12/2003 08:57 PM

Andy's latest Javascript experiment is over a week old now but I managed to miss it the first time round. It's an interesting twist on the sortable tables idea, allowing table data to be grouped as well as sorted by dragging each table header on to a box at the top of the table. Unfortunately the grouping feature seems unstable in IE but it works a treat in Firebird.

Company Gets In Trouble For Ads
Promoting Fake Sick Days
08/04/2004 03:05 PM
Apparently, despite all the clever humor to come out of the UK over the years, the folks who work at the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK have no sense of humor at all. Tech giant Benq started an ad campaign this summer suggesting that with their products, your "bogus sick days will be 33% more enjoyable." Not laugh out loud funny, but an amusing little tagline to get some interest. Apparently, the ASA is scared to death that people will take this seriously and start calling in sick just to mess around with Benq computers -- because we're sure that before this ad came out no one ever faked a sick day.

Move Over DataGrid, There's a New Grid
in Town!
08/18/2004 01:30 AM
Despite the richness and versatility of its programming interface, the ASP.NET 1.x DataGrid control requires you to write a lot of custom code to handle common operations such as paging, sorting, editing, and deleting data. For example, while the DataGrid control can raise events when the user clicks to save or cancel changes, it doesn't offer much more than that. If you want to store changes to a persistent medium, such as a database, you have to handle the UpdateCommand event yourself, retrieve changed values, prepare a SQL command, and then proceed from there to commit the update.

Ventana Scroll Lamp 08/16/2004 08:06 AM

ventana_lamp.jpg imageSomebody needs to steal the concept of the Ventana scroll lamp and manufacturer a cut-rate version for less than the $700 the original goes for, because I would like to place dozens of them in my apartment for various uses, such as lighting up things, looking at, and swinging them out 180° on their mounts and saying "huh," and "would you look at that?" As it stands, though, a couple of halogen bulbs and a roll of space toilet paper isn't going to pry the better part of a grand out of my pocket.

The Ventana isn't the only lamp Pablo Designs has, either, and I found many of them to be pretty nifty.

New header graphic 07/22/2004 03:01 AM

Today there's a new header graphic. It was taken out the front window of a moving car on Interstate 25 just past Santa Fe, in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, in late afternoon during monsoon season. You can see the day's thunderstorm forming behind the hills.

The previous graphic was a picture of my grandfather, Rudy Kiesler, taken (probably) in the 1950s, in a small Georgia town where he had a schmatte< /a> factory. He's the good looking guy on the left. About the other guys, one is a pilot of an Eastern airlines plane, the other goyisha is a local cop, and we think the other Jew is one of my grandfather's associates. My grandfather died in 1995. Ea stern Airlines went out of business in 1991.

A list of previous graphics is here.
