Merry Christmas...... 12/24/2003 04:19 AM
NetFuture< /a> "NetFuture is an electronic newsletter....It looks beyond the generally recognized "risks" of computer use such as privacy violations, unequal access, censorship, and dangerous computer glitches. It seeks especially to address those deep levels at which we half-consciously shape technology and are shaped by it. What is half-conscious can, after all, be made fully conscious, and we can take responsibility for it..... Can we take responsibility for technology, or must we sleepwalk in submission to its inevitabilities?"

A Very Merry Christmas

A Very Merry Christmas 12/25/2003 02:02 PM
This is the BEST Christmas ever. I got everything I wanted and gave everything I could. It's been absolutely magical - and the day just started. After all is said and done, I'll list the loot for ya. I'm very happy, my friends - and I hope that your day / season is turning out to be just as magical....

I wish you a Merry Christmas...

I wish you a Merry Christmas... 12/24/2004 01:02 PM

You know what drives me mad? "Happy Christmas". It's been driving me a bit nuts for a while now. Surely it's "Merry Christmas"? Cos otherwise how can you say, "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year"? Google agrees with me: Merry Christmas (661,000 results) vs. Happy Christmas (183,000 results). So stop it, advertising wankers. Stop it TV people. Stop it, annoying card makers. Merry is better. It means drunk.

Anyway, I'm off to see the family today, so I would imagine posting will be even more sporadic than normal over the next week or so. I hope you all have a good time visiting family and stuff. I'll be back online properly in a few scant days, no doubt busting at the seams with enthusiasm and turkey and ideas and vim. In the meantime, if you want to do something good in the world, why not donate to Oxfam US, Oxfam UK or to Stonewall. And if that's all a bit worthy for you and you've enjoyed the guff I've pumped out over the last hundred years, then why not buy me a present or something. Best wishes... xx Tom

A belated Merry Christmas 12/29/2003 09:47 AM

I'm back to work after enjoying that most precious of things: a holiday without computers. Comment spam has been deleted, email spam has been saved in a special folder (for rapid training of bayesian classifiers in the future) and the few emails of actual importance have all been flagged for follow up. Oh, and my Mac's shipping date has slipped to the 32nd of January. If haven't received it by Macworld and Apple drop the price I'll be understandably upset.

Merry Christmas, Spymac!

Merry Christmas, Spymac! 12/25/2004 05:20 PM
On Spymac this Christmas, Forums are littered with missed gifts, Bamboozled, glossed-over wish lists With iPod minis and iTrips. For some, the tunes will be rocking, For others, megahertz clocking But what of all of those stockings With neither socks nor a dock nor The shocking bow-wrapped black box With a Power Mac peeking out from Under out of a bounty of wound-up frowns Not an ounce of astoundment, wow or surprise Decline in all shapes and sizes, Stifled cries and replies Of, “Oh, that’s not the right size? Should it have been bigger? White? Pink, blue or green? Did you want the red click wheel Or the new color screen?” It seems the holiday spirit Has gone the way of the Cube It’s presents now that we care about Instead of renewing The vows of tradition and family and love we hold dear, having replaced what were tidings with an endless frontier Of wrapping and ribbon And piles of debt, After two months of sweat There’s no time for regret, It’s Christmas, so let it Be, lest we forget it, If you got the wrong iPod There’s always Apple Store credit. Merry Christmas, from the Spymac News Team

Merry Christmas and a happy new year

Merry Christmas and a happy new year 12/28/2003 08:58 AM
The Fink team and I wish all of you a merry Christmas and happy Holidays. We are looking forward to yet another year where we can help the Macintosh community grow into the world of UNIX together with Mac OS X. We wish you all, that your hope is not too frail and that you will carry on following through with your wishes. May the world we live in gradually become a better place and may peace and understanding settle just for a few days. Enjoy your quiet time and in case we do not get around to saying it soon enough. A happy new year to all of you, stay with us we count on your support.

SCO is celebrating the end of one year and the start of the next with a new twist in its long, ever-changing, and never substantiated legal saber-rattling against IBM and all things Linux. In this latest turn, they have embraced the DMCA, claiming in a news release today that "Distribution of the copyrighted ABI code, or binary code compiled using the ABI code, with copyright management information deleted or altered, violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act codified by Congress at 17 U.S.C. §1202. DMCA liability extends to those who have reasonable grounds to know that a distribution (or re-distribution as required by the GPL) of the altered code or copyright information will induce, enable, facilitate, or conceal an infringement of any right under the DMCA."

I confess, I have a soft spot in my heart for inside-out languages like PHP. The first real compiler I ever wrote was for a sort of text-processing macro language in which the commands were embedded in the data. This is part of a more general class of programming languages in which a peculiar form of processing is assumed by default, such as the pattern/action syntax of awk that assumes an invisible outer loop. -- Larry Wall

Brin and Templeton

Brin and Templeton 04/28/2004 11:31 AM
EWeek: Google's Brin Talks on Gmail Future The most interesting thing is that Google co-founder Sergey Brin knows Brad Templeton, an outspoken advocate of encrypted email, and they're discussing what to do. Sergey also says they plan to make Gmail public to everyone within three-to-six months, and an encrypted backend probably won't make it in by then. Templeton: The Gmail Saga. A good discussion of some privacy problems and solutions, but notice that Brad and the EFF haven't signed the anti-ads letter. I agree that the most important thing Google could do is encryption, and there are some simple steps that Google can take within their existing framework. First, they should immediately move everything to SSL. When I was at a conference last week, anyone could read my Gmail email, and with a little extra work, perhaps modify my account and things. With SSL, everything would be protected and encrypted. Second, they should use public-key encryption. (This part will be a bit technical.) When you create a Gmail account, your computer creates a keypair. The public key is sent to Google. The private key is encrypted with a password you choose, and the encrypted version is sent to Google. (Important: Google never gets your password.) When an email is received for your account, the server encrypts it with your public key before saving it. When you log into read it, you download your encrypted key, decrypt it with your password, and then your computer decrypts your mail with the resulting key as it's downloaded. (Already, all your mail goes through Gmail's JavaScript client to get processed and turned into HTML, so this won't be too hard to add on the client-side.) In this way, your mail is never stored in a way Google has access to. Third, they should investigate encrypting the indexes in a similar manner. If that's not possible or practical, they should do it the way Brad suggests (store them encrypted with a password sent to Google when you log in and deleted when you log out)....

Sergey Brin Gives LinuxWorld Keynote 08/15/2002 09:41 AM
Sergey Brin gave the keynote at LinuxWorld, which explained how and why Google used Linux for their 10,000-machine server farm. Some press coverage is below. Let me know if you find any other articles. Wired: Linux Feels the Corporate Love. "Imagine heading up a company that's powered by 10,000 Linux servers," Martin Felts, a systems security manager, said. "Logically, I knew it's not like Sergey can just muck around with Google's machinery whenever he has a whim, but still. I think everyone who heard his speech wanted to become Brin for at least a day." Infoworld: Google gives testimony to Linux scalability. '"We, on a daily basis, even get queries from Antarctica," Brin said. Google probably gets queries from the international space station as well, he said.'...

Sergey Brin in Drag - EXCLUSIVE

Sergey Brin in Drag - EXCLUSIVE 04/09/2004 03:54 PM
Privacy advocates have often discussed Google allows your past to haunt you. Any careless mistake or childish prank is preserved on the Internet, forever, available for anyone curious enough to do a Google search. Well, the problem has really hit home -- so to speak -- for Google's own founder, Sergey Brin, whose college website once included a photo of him in drag. It's tempting to laugh about how this will completely derail Google's IPO, and joke about how good Sergey looks in a Speedo, but I think we as a society need to move beyond our embarrassment, and admit that all founders of major companies did some pretty silly things in college -- the only difference is that Sergey was dumb enough to put them on the Web for all eternity. Thanks to alterego for the tip about the pictures....
