Security Investigator: Case Of the
Heartless Husband - Part I
04/09/2004 03:57 PM

http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/security/investigator/archives/000258.asp I never know what my next assignment will be. One minute I'm up to my armpits in child pr0n distributors, the next minute I'm catching an overpaid executive selling company secrets... and before you know it I'm low on coffee and grumpy as hell. And so our next case begins... with me being low on coffee and *really* grumpy. The night before ended as the sun came up - only problem was that I had never made it to bed....

Information Architecture - Part 1

Information Architecture - Part 1 04/13/2004 03:42 PM
Information Architecture is an extremely under-valued tool. Well crafted IA makes a huge difference to the success of even a small website, and knowing just a few basics can work magic.

Heartless response

Heartless response 12/29/2004 11:52 AM
Heart less response An American couple survived while diving off Thailand during the tsunami. Because they had lost all their possessions, they had to have new passports issued. At the Bangkok airport other governments had set up booths to assist their citizens. The couple searched there for officials from the American consulate for three hours, before finding them in the VIP lounge. Oh, and U.S. officials demanded payment before taking any passport pictures.

Does medical insurance have to be

Does medical insurance have to be
heartless?
05/16/2004 12:08 PM
A friend of mine has been fighting chronic illness for years, a service-related disability (US Marine Corps), and has recently (finally) been able to get some relief ... and, naturally, insurance won't cover the costs. The Veterans Administration has been involved from the beginning, but has so far proven to be incapable of helping (drug pushing, mainly), and now she's stuck with thousands of dollars of bills for necessary medical treatment that insurance won't pay for. Oh, she works as a software engineer for one of the largest companies in the USA (and the world), and they treat her like she's a malingerer for having chronic illnesses. Where should she go for help and advice that will do as little as possible to make the financial issue any worse? How is it that a pretty well-funded system like the VA can fail so miserably at one of its primary responsibilities (care of veterans who suffer service-related disabilities)? Is there any compassion left in the US? Or have we all gone the way of the Almighty Dollar?

Groove is an integral part of Total
Information Awareness

Groove is an integral part of Total
Information Awareness
03/11/2003 01:59 PM
Mitch Kapor did the principled thing last week and resigned from the board of Groove Networks, which was founded by his old friend Ray Ozzie. John Markoff's article reporting on Kapor's resignation also confirmed something that Mike Helfrich, VP of Groove Networks, hinted at during the Q&A at the Supernova 2002 conference. Groove is an integral part of Poindexter's Orwellian Total Information Awareness. (Mildly interesting factoid -- Mike Helfrich was on the panel right before Mitch Kapor spoke -- did Mitch listen to Mike's Q&A?) One of Groove's biggest customers is the intelligence and defense community. As Mike said at Supernova 2002, driving a 757 into the center of the network does teach something about the problems with centralization, and the advantages of decentralization. Groove makes a lot of sense for intelligence work, when you think about. I've played around with Groove a little bit, and I am very impressed. And I don't have any problems with our intelligence community using good tools -- in fact I am delighted that they have good tools. But to have those same tools being used for Total Information Awareness is an abomination. As the article points out, commercial software developers are going to start wrestling with the same issues that physicists have wrestled with since World War II. To what degree are they responsible for the ends to which their tools are put? Congratulations to Mitch (even if he didn't recognize what an asset I would have been to OSAF) for refusing to participate in TIA.

Area 51 Investigator goes underground!

Area 51 Investigator goes underground! 05/26/2004 05:57 AM

I am a very proud and loyal American. I support the principles of this country and would never do something that would put me under Uncle Sam's scrutiny. As a citizen I pay taxes to Uncle Sam so that my children and I sleep well at night knowing that the government is watching our backs and doing the things that keep us on top of the technology power curve. So I am not all sympathetic
when I hear about some knuckle head messing around with government sensors out in the desert.

Everyone has seen the movies and heard the rumors about Area 51 and I am sure their are a lot of people that would give their eye teeth to visit the site. Uncle Sam has the area restricted for a reason and that is good enough for me. When someone is out there digging up sensors in my opinion that is bordering on treason. So I have no qualms when someone messes with federal property
I would expect the FBI to find out if the individual is a curious george or a foreign spy.

We all are entitled to our opinions and are responsible for our actions. You are free to do a lot of things but people need to realize their are consequences to actions such as this. [The Register]
