Brent Simmons of NetNewsWire fame has defined a couple of new clipboard formats specifically for handling RSS feed data: RSSi ("RSS Item") and RSSs ("RSS Source"). As far as I know NetNewsWire is the only app currently using these formats so... I've whipped up a free REALbasic class module to make getting and setting RSSi and RSSs clipboard datatype easy in any REALbasic app. (If you're building a Cocoa app, check out Brent's freely-available classes). If you're creating an RSS-using app, I urge you to consider supporting these formats - the more the merrier.

Brent fever hits Microsoft UK 01/23/2004 02:24 PM
The Office's David Brent has gone down a storm at Microsoft UK, where staff are said to be queueing up for management training just so they can get a glimpse of the videos. Just don't tell Bill. Employees at Microsoft's UK office are said to be practically queueing up for management training after the company brought in David Brent, the infamous manager from the BBC's hit series The Office, to help with training.

Brent’s Psychic Predictions for
2004

Brent’s Psychic Predictions for
2004
12/30/2003 02:53 PM
Are RSS aggregators pretty much there, just needing some tweaks and small features—or at they still at the very beginning of their evolution, with a long road still ahead?

This question was asked on the NetNewsWire beta testing list. It’s a good question.

Answer: aggregators still have a long road ahead. What you see now is just the beginning.

I have an idea of some of the things you’ll see in 2004 (not just in NetNewsWire but in aggregators in general). So consider this as Brent’s psychic predictions for 2004.

1. Atom syndication support. Some aggregators already have this, and I suspect most will by mid-2004.

2. Synching. The idea is to synchronize not only your subscription lists but also the read/unread status of individual headlines—and to make it so it works between different apps, even apps running on different operating systems.

3. Easier subscribing. One of the problems for new users is the problem of subscribing to feeds. The “feed” URL scheme is a step forward here, because it makes it so you can subscribe to feeds directly from your browser. It also means instead of lots of ways to do this, which is inherently confusing, aggregator developers and users can collapse it down to one way. (I suspect there will be other good ideas too—especially in the realm of finding feeds.) Making all this easy for new users is a high priority.

Anyway... individual aggregators, NetNewsWire included, will add lots of other new features not listed above. The above are just the things I predict aggregators will do in common for 2004. I expect lots of innovation to come from all over, but I can’t predict what those innovations will be.

Years from now aggregators will be like email apps: we’ll know what an aggregator should do and what the UI conventions are. But for now we get to be creative, try new ideas, see what sticks. So—my last prediction—I except 2004 to be fun.

Slashdot Trolling Defined

Slashdot Trolling Defined 01/16/2004 11:33 AM

Slashdot trolling phenomena: Here's an example of awesomeness of Wikipedia combined with some pretty interesting reading. It's several thousand words on the trolling of Slashdot comments.

The Slashdot trolling phenomena make up a bizarre and complex subculture found on the popular Slashdot technology website. It is a mixture of juvenilia, sarcasm, deliberately bad jokes, tasteless nonsense and highly developed and artistic attempts to provoke outraged responses from other forum users, or amuse them. It is a subset and a microcosm of Internet trolling in general.

Folk Process defined and expanded upon

Folk Process defined and expanded upon 07/29/2004 05:05 AM
Hot on the heels of the attack on Woody Guthrie's memory (in the form of a lawsuit against political parodists who used his "This Land is Your Land" as part of a Flash movie) is this wonderful piece on what Pete Seeger called "the folk process" -- the way that traditional art has been made by ripping, mixing and burning the art that preceded it.
Guthrie may be right that Pete Seeger was the first to coin the term "folk process", but the process of oral song-transmission through through variation and selection was being analyzed even before Pete Seeger's birth in 1919. And the process itself has been operating as long as there have been songs. The folk process was described, though not so named, by Cecil Sharp in 1907: "[Development of a folk song] involves the three principles of continuity, variation, and selection."
