Friday Funnies... 04/09/2004 03:57 PM

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am." The woman below replied, "You're in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You're between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude." "You...

Daily funnies as RSS

Daily funnies as RSS 11/17/2003 05:46 AM
Now this is a fantastic idea: daily comic-strips syndicated as RSS feeds -- who needs a separate "comics reader" when an RSS aggregator can suck in anything that can be represented as a syndicated feed?

More Patent Funnies 02/01/2005 09:44 PM
Perhaps just now it’s unfashionable to grumble about patents, given that Sun and IBM are showering the world with bucketfuls of ’em (and a fine thing, too), but if you want a loud, ugly, wake-up call, start at VarChars, which is offered by someone who apparently wishes to be known only as “rayg”. Samples: IBM Receives Patent for Using Regular Expressions to Extract Information from Documents, Google Receives Patent for Highlighting of Search Results, and Microsoft Attempts to Patent Object Persistence. Read on for some predictably-negative commentary and—gasp!—a look inside some incredibly-advanced Google technology...

I didn’t think I was coming to Sun to work on blogging and syndication, but it turns out the whole industry has woken up to the fact that There’s Something Happening Here, and so it’s burning quite a few of my cycles, and has also generated a couple of amusing (and instructive) anecdotes...

Dubya Photo Funnies

Dubya Photo Funnies 08/28/2004 01:39 PM
What happened was, Lauren was away during the Democratic Convention, and as a politics junkie, I wanted to watch some of it, so the kid (just turned five) ended up watching a couple of the big speeches with me. (All on webcast, our TV is a movie box, doesn’t get any channels). He’s full of questions so I tried to explain, and as a result the candidate is the only public figure in the world whose face he knows, when we’re somewhere that there’s a TV showing news he’s apt to pipe up “There’s John Kerry.” This is a little embarrassing, especially considering he’s a Canadian. This morning I was reading news and made some remark about George Bush and he asked “who’s he?” so I tried to explain the big picture around the election and I went looking for some Dubya pix to show him. So I went to the bio page at the official Bush re-election site, and clicked on “View George W. Bush Photo Gallery”... busted link, a peek inside the source reveals href="\News\PhotoAlbum.aspx"... if I were mean-spirited I’d suggest that something about either being Republican or using Windows makes you stupid, but seriously, have to wonder about an organization that claims it can run America not being clueful enough to use a link-checker. Back to our story... I went to Google and looked for pictures of George Bush. This turns out to be a bad idea; the top-ranked pictures are by and large, shall we say, not Republican-friendly. Wanted posters, deranged-monster morphs, things that have just got ta be PhotoShopped. “Why are you laughing, Daddy?” said the kid, and I couldn’t really explain. (PS: Lots of nice pictures of George over at the White House site if you want ’em).

It's Crazy Sock Day at SLS, and you can see the entries on our terribly unofficial moblog! All of the pictures were taken with my Treo 600 or Kate's Samsung VGA-1000.

We're having great fun playing with Kate's new phone. It's got a camera with a flash, fun ringtones, Java for games, and a 14-day free trial of iKTV television! I took some pictures of the screens and posted them on my moblog.

Freebie Friday

Freebie Friday 07/23/2004 06:05 PM

It's raining free apps!

  • Picasa is a pretty terrific photo management software. Google just bought the company, and they're giving Picasa away for free. My father-in-law just got a digital camera for his birthday, so I set him up with Picasa. Now he just plugs in the camera, and up pops picasa. It slurps off all the pictures on to the computer, and clears the camera card for the next use. All he has to do is name the album. He can also remove redeye, crop, enhance, print, email, and etc. The interface is extremely friendly. I use Photosho p Album at home, but if I didn't have that, I'd use Picasa.

  • Microsoft snapped up Lookout, a search plugin for Outlook, and that's in the free software bin now too. Lookout is a lightning-speed email search that relieves you from organizing your emails (like I ever did anyway). The speed on this thing is amazing. Did the designer mail me that photoshop? 'attachment: psd' Where was I meeting Deane for lunch? 'lunch from: Deane'. What was the confirmation number for the flight? 'flight'. Sort of like the Gmail search features, but for your desktop.

Why hasn't Microsoft snapped up NewsGator? Newsgator paired with Lookout would be awesome. Instant search of every post from every blog you read. Maybe they have some larger RSS strategy in mind. After all, they've certainly noticed RSS.

Freaky Friday

Freaky Friday 03/20/2003 05:31 PM
For some reason, MT isn't allowing me to update my last post, so if you've got a mirror for my video, please add it via comment for "Mr. American Pie." (which, if you're too lazy to figure out, is the post that is sitting just below this one). If you post your mirrored URL in the comments stream for THIS post (Freaky Friday), you will be dubbed a retard for the rest of your life - and everyone will have my permission to make fun of you with reckless abandon. I normally wouldn't post something while I was prepping for a show, but this morning has been quite eventful. I woke up to the sound of Gretchen screaming: someone broke into our car, which was sitting directly in front of our home. They made off with random CDs, a Belkin inverter, a CB radio kit, and loose change. Bastard. I had to take a taxi to work. Gretchen's spending all day (in theory) at a shoot! She got called last night by her agency to be on some Japanese television show (its name eludes me). The premise is something along the lines of reinacting famous scenes. She's going to be part of the Versace murder, I think. Killer!...

Happy Friday

Happy Friday 10/28/2003 11:09 PM
I officially declare this day: Happy Friday! It's your duty to be thrilled about something in your life, and then put those feelings into action. Pants optional. Me? I'm gonna carve a pumpkin, watch a holiday movie, and then take the pumpkin to bed with me - in no particular order. Oh, don't worry - I'll blow out the candle beforehand. There will be absolutely NO funny business going on over here, either. Unless the movie happens to be a comedy. Methinks I'm out of candles, too. I wonder if glow sticks would work just as well? That way, I won't have to worry about starting any unnecessary fires. Flamage in bed = bad....
