The insanely great MacBand
The insanely great MacBand
02/10/2004 02:41 AMLast month, Apple released Garageband at
MacWorld, letting any budding musician create music from its suite of
sophisticated but simple audio tools. Given the potential for
thousands of musicians recording new songs at home, we knew it was a
great fit for Creative Commons and we're very happy to see a new
community has sprung up around the software, at MacBand. They've just launched but have
a system setup to categorize dozens of song styles and loops, with
every song available under a Creative Commons license, letting you
make remixes and new songs from others work. Garageband has the great
potential to become a collaborative music tool and MacBand looks like a great way to
facilitate that.

Edward Tenner, author of
Why Things
Bite Back: Technology and the Revenge of Unintended Consequences,
has a new book called
Our Own
Devices: The Past and Future of Body Technology. Meticulously
researched chapters trace the historical development of footgear,
chairs, keyboards, and eyeglasses. The unifying theme is the
coevolution of technology and technique: how we both change and are
changed by these "body technologies" as we use them.

New Storage Devices
04/13/2004 05:11 PMIO Data is set to ship the
first removable hard drive based on the IVDR (Information
Versatile Disk for Removable) specification. The system is comprised
of a hard disk drive sealed in a case which fits into an adapter
housing with a USB 2 interface (with USB 1 backwards compatibility.)
The initial release will have a 20GB capacity on a 1.8in hard drive in
a 3.14 x 2.6 inch cartridge, with larger capacities planned. The
adapter and disk will run $323, and disks a la carte at $229.
Meanwhile, Iomega is already
producing a similar doodad. The Rev
is a 35GB removable hard drive that is aimed at supplanting tape
devices for backups and archiving. The Rev costs $400 for the external
USB 2.0 unit and $380 for an internal ATAPI drive, both with a bundled
disk. The disks alone cost $60 each, or 4 for $200. That makes the IO
Data unit seem terribly expensive. Let's see what Moore's Law does
with that.
I've been looking at alternatives to my old, slow tape drive
system, which now fills five compressed 60GB tapes and takes two days
to do a full backup (I like incrementals!) I've been toying with the
idea of using a hot-swap RAID tower with a stack of big hard drives
instead of a tape library, but the cost and complexity of that is
making me hesitate. Either the IO Data or Iomega units might be just
the ticket.

Where Do You Use Wireless Devices?
Where Do You Use Wireless Devices?
09/10/2004 10:43 AMIf you ever needed more proof that people use wireless devices to help
them fill in the "empty" time when it used to be difficult to work or
communicate, Harris Interactive has the study for you. They've found
that a fair number of people use wireless devices
in places that previously were pretty much
off-limits towards anything productive: waiting in the
drive-through at the fast-food place (22%), while driving (20%) and in
the bathroom (15%). This isn't just talking about mobile data, but
mobile phone conversations, which would make you think that the
numbers should be higher. Of course, they are higher for the younger
generation, with 30% of college students admitting they used wireless
devices in the bathroom. Of course, whether or not this is a
good thing probably depends on whether or not you're one of the
people using wireless devices in these places.

Do People Want Converged Devices?
Do People Want Converged Devices?
01/05/2005 06:10 PMA new report has come out (and I swear we've seen similar ones in the
past) claiming that
people don't want
converged mobile phones and PDAs, as there are fears that
converged devices do everything badly and/or that they start to
include useless/pointless features. Of course, part of the problem is
that the survey is asking people if they want "converged devices," and
not about what they'd do with a converged device. The thing is, if
given the option of doing what a real converged device let people do,
many people would go for that option. It's not about the device, but
the applications of that device.
