New Twist on Combined Wi-Fi/Cellular
New Twist on Combined Wi-Fi/Cellular
12/03/2003 02:42 PMI'm curious if the writer of this article didn't quite understand the
technology: According to this piece, Calypso is marketing a platform
that will route calls from a Calypso cell phone over Wi-Fi to a cell
phone network. I'm guessing that in reality, Calypso is marketing a
platform that offers voice over Wi-Fi when in range of a Wi-Fi network
as well as voice over regular cellular networks. Calypso's Web site
doesn't go into much detail about how its technology works. China
Telecom has spent $500 million on Calypso's platform, which is
described here as delivering voice over Wi-Fi and cellular....
Combined Wi-Fi/Cellular an Interim Step
Combined Wi-Fi/Cellular an Interim Step
08/19/2004 03:19 PMThe market for combining Wi-Fi and cellular on a single device is one
that hasn't quite been worked out yet: For cellular operators without
their own Wi-Fi plays, a combined device might not pay off and could
cannibalize their own cellular data networks. Technology Review
Magazine suggests that cellular operators may view the combined
devices as sort of a tease, to get users hooked on the idea of
higher-speed wireless data just in time for them to start unrolling
more ubiquitous and higher-speed cellular data offerings. The catch
will always be cost so there's a chance the tease may backfire. If
users get hooked on Wi-Fi networks that are free to access, they may
decide to go out of their way to find a free hotspot rather than pay
for the cellular access which at least these days is far more
expensive. However, it's likely that a certain market segment will pay
for the convenience of having the higher speed wireless data from the
cellular operators in more locations....

Cellular sounds
Cellular sounds
04/15/2004 01:10 PMWhat do cells sound like? Nanotech pioneer Jim Gimzewski and grad
student Andrew Pelling are using the tiny tip of an atomic force
microscope like the needle of a record player to pick up a cell's
sound-generating vibrations. Gimzewski has named the fieled
"sonocytology." From a Smithsonian Magazine article about the
research:
"The distance the cell wall moves determines the
amplitude, or volume, of the sound wave, and the speed of the
up-and-down movement is its frequency, or pitch. Though the volume of
the yeast cell sound was far too low to be heard, Gimzewski says its
frequency was theoretically within the range of human hearing. 'So all
we're doing is turning up the volume,' he adds."

01/27/2004 02:56 PMBridgePort Networks secured a $10 million investment from Polaris
Venture Partners and General Catalyst Partners: The company will use
the money for product development and market expansion. BridgePort
offers technology targeted at cellular carriers that integrates cell
networks with Wi-Fi networks. Customers could seamlessly roam from one
to the other using voice and data services. The network architecture
is probably more complicated than it needs to be but BridgePort is
appealing to the needs of the mobile operators. In a nutshell,
BridgePort's solution routes all data or voice traffic from Wi-Fi
networks through a BridgePort gateway. That way the cellular operator
can track and charge for all usage. The setup is ideal for cellular
operators who don't want to hand customers off onto a Wi-Fi network
where they stand to loose revenues if they can't track usage....

Boingo and the Mac
Boingo and the Mac
06/18/2004 01:48 AMI'm not at all sure that there's a business model in Wi-Fi
connections other than offering them as part of something else, but if
anyone is going to make this work it's probably going to be Sky Dayton
and his team at Boingo.
I haven't used Boingo, in part because it's been a Windows-only
service, and I've bugged Sky every time I've seen him for a Mac
version. It's coming -- a beta Boingo for the Mac has been sent to a
few folks, which means the real thing is coming soon.
Still not sure about the business model, but I'm glad to see the Mac
support.

Fiberlink Uses Boingo SDK
Fiberlink Uses Boingo SDK
11/11/2003 03:10 PMFiberlink, the remote access aggretator, said it will use Boingo’s SDK
(software developer's kit) to build a client: The client will provide
Wi-Fi and in the future 3G sniffing, connection and authentication.
The deal also means that Fiberlink customers can access the hotspots
that are part of Boingo’s service. In another deal from an aggregator,
Infonet, which caters to large multinationals, will use hot spots that
are part of GRIC's network. GRIC is an aggregator that appeals to
distributed enterprises. I'm seeing an increasing number of
announcements about aggregators like Fiberlink, iPass, and GRIC
including as many hot spots into their networks as they can and making
it easier for their customers to find and use the networks. They are
aggressively trying to lock their customers into relying on them for
Wi-Fi access before tons of roaming agreements happen between Wi-Fi
operators, making the aggregators irrelevant. It will be interesting
to watch what happens to these guys as the market evolves....
Boingo in 75 Airports
Boingo in 75 Airports
08/04/2004 11:42 AMBoingo partners with ICOA, expands to 75 airports: The battle for road
warriors hearts and minds starts and ends in the airport. Boingo now
has a roaming deal for all six of Icoa's airports, and 69 others
worldwide. The other day, I noted that SBC had signed up to resell
access at or operate service in many of the U.S. airports that offer
service. If they broker a few more deals, they could have the only
comprehensive airport service plan. A colleague of mine, a technology
writer who travels frequently, says he rarely sees people working on
laptops in airports. I don't know how that's possible, with the gate
areas full of laptop users before flights furtively plugged into
power. He's fallen in love with a Treo, which allowed him to skip
opening his laptop on a recent trip. I still wonder how many
applications people actually need. Does Blackberry's success show that
low-speed email is the primary application and that everything else is
a distant second? I doubt it every time I see a plane full of cramped
business people desperately typing away, reviewing Acrobat documents,
building PowerPoint presentations, running Excel spreadsheets, and
using proprietary software....
MCI Expands with Boingo
MCI Expands with Boingo
12/16/2003 05:23 PMMCI's Wi-Fi network includes 2,000 more locations via Boingo: The
press release and this article from News.com don't clarify precisely
what's going on here. I was unaware MCI even had a Wi-Fi option, and
its 600 locations sound very much like Wayport, a fact the News.com
article confirms (sort of: the current version says WavePort is the
partner, but I assume this is Wayport). Boingo already includes the
Wayport locations in its total, so if MCI adds Boingo, does that mean
that its customers will have double access to Wayport? And I've never
heard of MCI's client software, either. More clarification's probably
necessary to understand this deal....

Boingo Adds Mac Client
Boingo Adds Mac Client
01/06/2005 05:34 PM We Mac OS X users rejoice: Boingo has released their client for Mac
OS X. I'm a Mac user--as well as a Linux and Windows XP user--and
point out that the installed usage base of Wi-Fi on the Mac platform
is ridiculously high among mobile travelers, thus making it a good way
for Boingo to pick up customers. Boingo has the added advantage of
having a Mac-friendly CEO, Sky Dayton, who founded EarthLink, bringing
Internet access first to Mac users way way back in the mists of time
more than a decade ago. The client comes with a special coupon offer
for a month's free service when you sign up for the unlimited $21.95
per month package. The client is required to negotiate the
complexities of authenticating to dozens of different hotspot networks
in the absence of a clearinghouse, which allows cell networks to
handle cross-network roaming and settlement....
Boingo CEO Critiques Cometa
Boingo CEO Critiques Cometa
05/18/2004 06:18 PMBoingo Wireless CEO issues statement critiquing Cometa Networks'
failures: In a rare case of this sort, Sky Dayton, Boingo's founder
and CEO, issued a brief statement reiterating the overall growth in
revenue and use of public Wi-Fi hotspots, and critiquing Cometa's
missteps. The statement notes, "Cometa had the potential to become a
leading wholesale hot spot provider. The company's business plan made
a lot of sense -- build lots of hot spots on the cheap and wholesale
them to brands who shoulder the costs of marketing, support and
billing. But they didn't execute well. They spent too much money
before they needed to and demanded carriers pay high minimums for
access to a network that wasn't yet built. No carrier wanted to go
along with that." Dayton also noted that despite Boingo's ability to
sign up networks worldwide as part of their roaming and aggregation
system, that Cometa wouldn't work with them. Cometa signed a roaming
deal with iPass, but reports indicate that this was more theory than
an implemented reality. Dayton wrote, "Boingo had attempted to strike
a roaming agreement with Cometa, but they claimed to not be
interested. Even though their network wasn't much more than a promise,
they were acting as if they were already the market leader. They
succeeded in alienating the very people they needed to help them
succeed." We've heard now from other sources that Dayton's experience
was consistent with Cometa's approach to other firms....

Earthlink Integrates Boingo Software
07/12/2004 02:24 PMEarthLink will build Boingo's Wi-Fi software into its TotalAccess
package: TotalAccess has been EarthLink's key to user happiness from
its introduction about a decade ago. Originally, it handled the nasty
bits of finding the latest phone numbers and then dialing and
connecting. Now, it's broadened to include anti-spam, anti-popup, and
anti-scam software--and Wi-Fi. EarthLink's founder and chairman, Sky
Dayton, also founded and runs Boingo Wireless, and the two companies
have had a partnership for some time. The integration of Boingo's
Wi-Fi management software into TotalAccess makes it that much easier
for EarthLink's five million subscribers to choose to use Wi-Fi.
Boingo, by the way, used to note over 6,000 access points under
contract with about 3,300 live; in this press release they say 9,000
under contract. We're on the verge of seeing a large bump in network
sizes from aggregators to judge by this number and details provided
recently by GoRemote and iPass....
