Bluetooth Headset Woes Show Limits

Bluetooth Headset Woes Show Limits

Bluetooth Headset Woes Show Limits 04/09/2004 03:57 PM

Engadget writes about the complexity of just getting Bluetooth headsets to work with Bluetooth cell phones: Can I second this emotion? Bluetooth has two different kinds of remote talking: headset and hands-free. Some phones support one, some the other. Bluetooth in cars uses hands-free, but with some phones not supporting that mode, they won't work with the vehicles. (Bravo, say I. Studies have popped up all over that show that it doesn't matter whether or not you're hassling with the cell phone to reduce your awareness of the road and increase the incidence of accidents. No talking while driving, please, says this bicycle commuter who has frequently almost been hit by cell-phone-enabled drivers--with headsets!) A related woe for Mac OS X users: the OS supports Bluetooth extremely well, and you can use Bluetooth with your cell phone to send SMS, shunt people to voicemail, and to dial. The remarkable Salling Clicker lets you trigger all kinds of operations from and to cell phones, including using a cell phones joystick selector to move a mouse, or using a cell phone's proximity (entering/leaving) to lock a computer down or set an instant-messaging status note to available/away. But if you use your cell phone with your Mac OS X system, you can't use a Bluetooth headset. You have to turn off your OS X Bluetooth connection to re-enable the headset's connection. Even more complicated is using a Bluetooth headset with Apple's iChat, support for which they added recently. The headsets can only pair with a single device. Since the Mac can't shunt sound (yet?) from the headset to your cell phone, you have to repair back and forth to use the headset with iChat and your cell phone. Bluetooth: It's so simple, even a child could swear at it....

I have read the various hints about using Bluetooth headsets on OS X. I've updated my Bluetooth firmware for both the PowerBook (G4 Model 867MHz DVI and the D-Link DBT-120 H/W B2 running OS X Panther 10.3.9), but I still get ...

bt_hellokitty.jpg imageNot one, but two Hello Kitty cellphone peripherals in one day? Be still my heart! The first is from Expansys and is a Bluetooth headset, but not the clip-over-the-ear kind, but the kind you keep in a pocket and then use a corded earpiece with (read: sort of pointless). The other looks quite a bit the same as the first (although it's hard to tell exactly from the tiny picture) but comes in a gift box with what looks like a charger or a in-car unit or something. Oh, and it's white, which means it's designed to compliment Hello Kitty evening wear.

In general, big boom microphones aren't appealing to me, but the chrome and black plastic isn't unattractive. Feature-wise, it has all the standard bits, and is available from Sony directly for $130.

Nokia Bluetooth Picture Headset HS-13w 09/10/2004 09:26 AM

nokia_hs-13w_narrow.jpg imageIn all the fuss over the new Nokia fashion phones yesterday, I missed this Nokia Bluetooth Picture Headset (the HS-13w); fortunately, our pal Josh Rubin's keen eye scoped it out. The cool thing about the HS-13w is that it's meant to be worn as a locket, where you can use the built-in color display to look up and dial contacts. That way you can keep Nokia's funky 7280 (or any other Bluetooth-handset compatible Nokia) in your pocket. Pretty slick.

logitech_5025.jpg imageLogitech has a new "affordable" Bluetooth headset on the way, as long as you consider $70 not a lot of money for a fancy speaker and microphone. Believe it or not, I've so far resisted the Bluetooth headset thing, mostly because I don't need one, but also because it pains me to pay almost half-again the price of a phone for something I'd really like to see bundled in. But hey, it's a step in the right direction, at least.

Logitech also announced a "Pro" model which will use AFH (Adapative Frequency Hopping) to prevent interference from other 2.4GHz radios, like Wi-Fi and cordless phones.

Nokia 9300 Communicator Interview

Nokia 9300 Communicator Interview 09/10/2004 07:04 AM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/nokia_9300_int.jpg" alt="nokia_9300_int.jpg image" width="220" height="139" class="right border"/>All About Symbian has a nice article with Mark Squires, Nokia's UK Head of Communications. It's a bit fawning, but considering the source I think that's somewhat understandable, and it does go a long way in explaining the mindset behind the 9300's relative lack of features compared to its big brother, the Nokia 9500. According to Squires, the customer base using the 9500 simply didn't want Wi-Fi and a camera, so they pulled those features out, scaled the whole thing down, and went for something more svelte and simple.

There's an implication that Americans want too many features crammed in, while Europeans are satisfied with something straightforward and "smart." And that's fine, except the planned price for the 9300 is around $850 - seems like a lot of money for a 150MHz smartphone with no Wi-Fi and limited features, doesn't it?

bt800_rev.jpgFor the life of me, I can't figure out how to configure my phone to pair with my Bluetooth headset and still ring, which means I miss a lot of calls if I'm not paying attention. The (relatively) new Jabra BT800 headset has a built-in vibrate mode that would alleviate that problem, while giving me another: embarrassment. While the BT800 does feature an integrated LCD Caller ID read-out, it's also sort of huge, which makes my likelihood of wearing it anywhere outside of a tech convention pretty slim. If you don't mind the bulkiness, though, Mobileburn gives it high marks, with good battery life, excellent noise-cancelling features, and decent sound quality.
