Austin Wireless City Announces PC Deal

Austin Wireless City Announces PC Deal

Austin Wireless City Announces PC Deal 04/09/2004 03:57 PM

The Austin Wireless City Project, which builds hotspots for local venues free of charge, is talking about a deal it has with Image Microsystems: Image Micro takes old computers that would otherwise be headed for landfills and refurbishes them. It has donated 50 of the computers to Austin Wireless City. After those 50 donated computers are used, Image Micro will start loading Less Network's server software onto the computers. Venues can buy the bundled hardware and software, which serves as an AP, for $199. Previously, Austin Wireless City loaded the software but this new development saves time for the project, which already has a waiting list of 90 establishments hoping to get hotspots....

He includes a bit of found poetry from the Flying J, one of the many thousands of truck stops that are or will become hotspots over the next year: God Bless America / Position Open / Wireless Available. Schwartz started in Austin, and he also filed this article about the work being carried out by Richard MacKinnon, Jon Lebkowsky, and a cast of dozens involved in Austin Wireless City to spread free Wi-Fi across the town....

If you haven't read enough about Richard MacKinnon yet, just click: MacKinnon is now officially ubiquitous, along with many other members of Less Networks and Austin Wireless City, through this extensive, multi-story coverage in the Austin Chronicle about the efforts that lead to the current free movement in that city, and how it's proceeding through cooperation with commercial entities, retail establishments, and the city. MacKinnon is a civic booster of the finest order: he doesn't talk and hold meetings--he builds. Zane McCarthy of Austin Unleashed (inset) is interviewed alongside his pal Bruce Sterling: McCarthy couples an interest in the community side with business-grade installation and support. This takes some load off volunteers and provides businesses who want someone they can pay to worry about their problems with an outlet....

Wireless To Blanket All Of New York City

Wireless To Blanket All Of New York City 08/22/2004 01:12 PM
New York City is preparing to go fully wireless by January, 2005. The deal is currently being finalized between New York City authorities and six technology companies. To strengthen coverage and signal, 18,000 new lamp post-based antennas will be installed virtually everywhere in the five burroughs that make up New York City.

The plan has already come under fire by local officials concerned what the new antennas will do to people's health, now and in the long run. Local activist John Campos of Queens, NY, says, "Within where I live, over a mile radius, there are over 300 antennas already," said Mr Campos, pointing at a cluster of small masts on a rooftop across the street. "What happens if in 20 years, there's even a minor adverse reaction to human beings?"

Peter Vallone Jr is a Queens council member and chairman of the city's safety committee who also shares Mr. Campos's concerns. "The city was in the papers when I first came out against this, saying there's less radiation than from a microwave (oven) from these antennas, and that may be true," said councilman Vallone. "But nobody runs a microwave 24 hours a day, seven days a week, outside their bedroom door when they are sleeping. That's why it's important we study this," he added.

Commissioner Menchini addresses these concerns by stating, "We've had industry experts come in and advise us on this and everything I've heard, from our health commissioner to the industry experts, says there's no health risk associated with these antennas and these devices."

04/30/2004 09:21 AM
London's Westminster Council will build an enormous wireless zone for closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring; public access, unavailable: The project might create the world's largest wireless zone, but this won't be useful initially to its citizens, only to the monitors of the peace who observe goings on by camera day and night. They also envision connecting people to "Council services," which might include monitoring the elderly. (The British have such a penchant for "monitoring." Thank goodness, as previously reported, they now have enshrined privacy rights...which allow CCTV everywhere.) Over at Techworld, Peter Judge reports that the network won't be connected to the Internet nor can the council offer for-fee access by law. The idea of free access doesn't appear to have come up....

10/29/2003 12:10 AM
After a couple days of using Mutt to read my mail, thanks to the constant crashing of Mail.app when presented with six years of email, I've recorded the steps I took to get sendmail communicating over an SSH tunnel to my actual host. Tips: I've added a '\' where each of the long commands is wrapped, to indicate that it's all one line. sendmail.mc and sendmail.cf are two distinct files. If you're not copy-pasting these instructions into your terminal, double-check these filenames before executing the commands. Open a terminal and become a superuser. sudo -s Create a local copy of the generic sendmail.mc file. cp \ /usr/share/sendmail/conf/cf/generic-darwin.mc \ /etc/mail/sendmail.mc Add the following lines into /etc/mail/sendmail.mc, above the MAILER lines near the end of the file. define(`RELAY_MAILER_ARGS', `TCP $h 10025') define(`SMART_HOST',`relay:[127.0.0.1]') DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA, Family=inet') FEATURE(`accept_unresolvable_domains')dnl Backup the system-installed sendmail.cf. mv...
