But another type of weapon will become equally dangerous and much more available within the next decade: an artificially intelligent computer virus. Is It Fair To Ban Computer Use For Those
Arrested For Computer Crimes?
12/04/2003 02:37 AM
It seems like it's pretty common for anyone arrested for any sort of computer related crime to be "banned" from using computers for a certain period of time. Now, however, some are questioning that ban because computers have become such a necessary part of life for so many people. Security Focus is running an article talking about the case of someone accused of hacking into numerous company networks and defacing some websites. While his trial has not occurred yet, he's been banned from using computers since he was indicted three years ago. His lawyer is now arguing that this violates his constitutional rights, saying that it goes to far in violating his right to free speech.

So really, where did the computer go?

So really, where did the computer go? 09/04/2004 03:58 PM
When I awoke on Tuesday to the sound of my alarm at 6:45 a.m., I was groggy. Being a nighttime worker, my body has become accustomed to a late-morning sleep schedule, and believe me, I am not a morning person. But on Tuesday, I, like so many others, fought through my fatigue and reached for my PowerBook to open Safari and catch a glimpse of the new iMac. Of course, I had an idea of what the machine would look like. Since the sunflower idea had been exhausted, the notion of another base/monitor combo didn’t seem likely. Since the iMac just isn’t an iMac without a built-in monitor, a headless unit was also out of the question. That left an all-in-one design like the original iMac — or more recent eMac — that incorporated a flat-panel screen, a G5 processor and, at least in my mind, lots of vents and fans. To be honest, I wasn’t all that hopeful. We all know that the G5 is one hot chip, and Apple has had to be a little more creative than they’d like — between the Power Mac’s cheese-grater effect and the Xserve’s giant frontside chambers, a G5 iMac had the potential to be a design disaster. The iMac has always been known for its simplicity in both form and function, and without its clean lines, smooth exterior and eye-popping chic, the iMac would be no better than the similar offerings from Sony or Gateway. I knew that a bubble design wouldn’t cut, nor would a fold-up or detachable system make the grade. Apple had to neatly put a G5 system — that currently stands at 18-inches deep in the Power Mac — and somehow cram it into the back of a widesceen Cinema Display. Needless to say, when I opened up Safari and clicked Apple.com, I was amazed. Of course, there are critics. Some say the system is "unbalanced," but let’s remember that Apple had a the seemingly-impossible task of fitting professional power into consumer size. And they’ve performed admirably. People can, and will, diss the design, but the fact remains that the G5 iMac is a compact, all-in-one G5-based computer that’s fully-user serviceable without drawing away from the overall aesthetics of the unit. I mean, just look what's beh ind it. Where're the speakers? Where's the ventilation? Where’s the power button? And, as Apple itself has said itself, where’s the computer go? The design of the new floating iMac can't, and won’t please everyone,. With a bar so high, capturing the appeal of the masses time and time again is a near impossibility, but the design team must be commended for its consistency — no matter what, they get people talking. But give 'em a break… Tomorrow: So, what’s with the price?

The Computer Ate My Budget

The Computer Ate My Budget 08/11/2004 01:36 PM
What is it with large, government computer systems and their inability to actually work? Last month we wrote about problems with an expensive SAP computer system the Federal Technology Service had installed that was causing people to cry by having such user friendly features as making the simple "save" feature take 15 steps. Now, the city of Tacoma, Washington is admitting that their $51 million SAP implementation has made it impossible for them to do a budget. One of the reasons the city spent so much on this fancy new computer system was to have more accurate data for budget forecasts. However, it turns out that SAP doesn't actually have a budget module, so they've been trying to kludge stuff together. Right now, that means that the city can't actually figure out how much money they'll at the end of the year, or how much they're likely to bring in. Computer glitches certainly happen, but you have to wonder why the city would agree to switch on the system that couldn't do some of the most basic features it was supposed to.

I've just started the Windows File and Settings Transfer Wizard, a splendid utility that moves all your, well, files and settings to your new computer, which has never been known to work. On the plus side, the X40 is lovely. Light 'n' loaded. And, while the keyboard of...
