Meru claims it's more compliant than compliant: Meru Networks issued a very odd press release that stated that although they were already meeting Wi-Fi Alliance certification standards, they resubmitted their gear for "more rigorous tests than are used on its competitors." But the outcome is that Meru is..."completely compliant." There's back story here that wasn't exposed in the release. It sounds like someone has been talking smack about Meru. And now they are compliant, even though before they were...compliant. Sure, that takes the confusion out of the marketplace....

End of the Animal Kingdom

End of the Animal Kingdom 12/21/2003 01:19 PM

It turns out the wackily ponderous movie made in Pompignan last year (shooting of which complained about here, brief review by Herself of hometown showing here) isn’t going straight to TV after all – we’d heard it was going to show on Arte sometime around now – it’s been rele ased in cinemas.

If you’re near a major French city and possessed of nothing better to do, you can head out see our very own little red-haired kid in his star turn as “little red-headed kid in schoolhouse”, Noël the vigneron as “guy in baseball cap”, the old guy on a bicycle leading his white horse down the main street as he does every day, lots of purdy haute garrigue scenery, and much else besides, in a largely unsatisfying study of longing, sensuality, death and sheep.

It’s not that bad. In many ways it’s like a two-hour love letter to our little village.

Giving the finger to an animal

Giving the finger to an animal 05/19/2004 11:58 AM
A man got too close to a jaguar at the Rio Grande Zoo and lost a finger. Before zoo employees realized what had happened, the guy fled the scene. Apparently, it's illegal to pet the predator. After the finger was found outside the jaguar's cage, police took a print from the detached digit and tracked the guy down through his zoo pass. Sadly, the frequent visitor who came to the zoo almost daily is now banned. I bet the jaguar will miss him. "They're not your friends, they're not your pets," the zoo director said. "They're wild animals." Link

"No dogs please"

"No dogs please" 05/03/2004 04:48 PM
I'm such a lover of rummy prose. It's why I chortle at Wodehouse--that and his ridiculously involved plot-lines. It's why I press a copy of Jerome K. Jerome's "Three Men in a Boat" into the hands of passersby. Douglas Adams's "It hung in the air in exactly the way that bricks don't" is a constant grammatical companion. And, of course, there's the inimitable Winston Churchill's "This is the sort of pedantry up with which I will not put."

So, given half a chance, I'd drone on and on quoting just about every other page in Lynne Truss's witty yet precise Eats, Shoots & Leaves".

Here, though, are a couple of bits of humorous eloquence--the first by Ms. Truss, the second by Thurber--I just couldn't pass by without mentioning out loud.

p. 81.

Readers grow so accustomed to the dwindling incidence of commas in public places that when signs to up saying "No dogs please", only one person in a thousand actually bothers to point out that actually, as a statement, "no dogs please" is an indefensible generalisation, since many dogs do please, as a matter of fact; they rather make a point of it.
p. 70.
Thurber was once asked by a correspondent: "Why did you have a comma in the sentence, 'After dinner, the men went into the living-room'?" And his answer was probably one of the loveliest things ever said about punctuation. "This particular comma," Thurber explained, "was Ross's way of giving the men time to push back their chairs and stand up."

Isle of Dogs

Isle of Dogs 06/17/2005 04:27 PM

On the Rajasaari Beach

« The lovely beach on Rajasaari, a.k.a. dog island. »

We skipped the Samba parade today and took Otava up to Rajasaari again instead. I've rarely seen a dog so happy as he is to run around like a crazed puppy and swim around in the water. I'm continually impressed by the dog parks in Helsinki and Rajasaari seems like one of the best kept secrets in town since there are never many dogs around when we visit. It's a rocky knob of an island with lots of trees, water and sand for dogs to play in freely off the leash. It's doggie nirvana. It sits just off the shore from the Prime Minister's home in Meilahti which likely prevents any development.

Otava certainly likes to swim, but we're going to have to work on his floating ball retrieval skills as he wades in like a water buffalo, drinks around it, sniffs and then wanders off while drinking more water in search of something more interesting. Perhaps we need to stuff some sausage into the floating kong ball to pique his curiosity. :)

I left work early on Friday in order to try some mämmijäätelö at the Häme regional fair in Senate Square. Many of the Finnish regions seem to offer these during the summertime and it's fun to try regional oddities. I am still pouting that we arrived too late for the mämmi ice cream and I'm thinking that I'll just have to make some myself. Otava got to try some of the boar pyttipannu since he caught a whiff of it while we were snaking our way around the stalls in search of ice cream and decided that he was going to park it in front of the pyttipannu stand until he was served. Oh, the ladies loved him and gave him a wee taste which sealed our fate of having to buy some and lure him away with it. At least he wasn't behaving like he does at the pet store where he walks along the treat aisle and just shoves his face into the bin of stuff he likes the most. :)

One disappointment was being with a friend who wanted to take some pictures of some cute ceramic pots in the Häme market. I was busy holding Otava, who was interested in heading towards the food section, and couldn't quite believe that the vendor started giving her an incredibly hard time about 'using the pictures against her' or some really wacky justification for being viciously rude instead of saying 'please, no pictures.' It didn't occur to me until we were walking home that it was very likely because the friend isn't white and I thought about going back without Otava to see if I would get the same treatment if I tried to take pictures of her cute, but unoriginal, pottery though I wasn't sure how I'd respond if the vendor were to smile and offer to show me other items while I was taking a few pictures. It's always the little things that get under your skin and fester.

We may owe our speech and our existence
to dogs
01/16/2004 11:31 AM

In my pursuit to understand Bo better, I'm reading a book that Barak gave me called How to Speak Dog. It's really a great book about how to to communicate with your dog. Stanley Coren makes an interesting assertion about our co-evolution with dogs.

Stanley Coren
It is well established that the primitive humans who survived to become our forefathers formed an early relationship with dogs. Compare our success to that of the Neanderthals, who never got along with dogs, and who ultimately died out. Some evolutionary theorists have suggested that the survival of our ancestors had to do with the fact that our cooperative partnership with dogs made us more efficient hunters than Neanderthals2. With the dog's more acute sensory systems, finding game was easier.
[...]
Here is where the serious speculation begins. These theorists suggest that since these early humans now had dogs to do the tracking, they no longer needed the facial structures that would allow them to detect faint scents. This, then, allowed our early ancestors to evolve more flexible facial features, which were capable of shaping more complex sounds. In other words, our prehistoric association with dogs, who would do the smelling for us, gave us the ability to create speech.
[...]

Thanks Bo!

Cancer-sniffing dogs

Cancer-sniffing dogs 09/24/2004 05:36 AM
David Pescovitz: Scientists report that dogs can smell disease in the urine of bladder cancer patients. In the study, published in this week's Br itish Medical Journal, the canines successfully identified a cancer patient's urine sample placed among six control samples 41 percent of the time, far better than the 14 percent expected by chance. From an Associated Press article on the research:
"Perhaps the most intriguing finding, though, was in a comparison patient whose urine was used during the training phase. All the dogs unequivocally identified that urine as a cancer case, even though screening tests before the experiment had shown no cancer. Doctors conducted more detailed tests on the patient and found a life-threatening tumor in the right kidney."

Just Nuisance, Able Seaman. The only canine enlisted in the Royal Navy, Just Nuisance served from 1939 to 1944 in Simon's Town, South Africa (on his papers his occupation was listed as 'Bone Crusher' and his religion 'Canine Divinity League [Anti-Vivisection]'). Providing a great source of morale to sailors stationed there he would escort them on train trips and make sure they made it back to base after a night on the town. Of course being a sailor himself he was privy to a few brushes with the law as well by traveling on the railways without a pass (punishment: Confined to the banks of Froggy Pond, Lily Pool, with all lamp posts removed) or sleeping on an Officer's bed (punishment: Deprived of bones for seven days.). Married, and survived by five children, on his death he was afforded a funeral with full military colours. You can read his biography (which spawned a television series), or merely pay respects at his stat ue next time you're in Simon's Town.
