Noisy Channels Models Provide Short Answers to FAQs
http://www.economist.com/printedition/displayStory.cfm?Story_ ID=3127462

Eric Brill is guiding his Microsoft research team to build a system capable of providing 50-word answers to questions such as "What are the rules for qualifying for the Academy Awards?" by using an approach called a "noisy channel model." Noisy channel models, which are already used in spell-checking and speech-recognition systems, work by modeling the transformation between what a user means (such as the word he or she intended to type) and what he does (the garbled word as it was actually typed). By analyzing many pairs of correct and misspelled words using statistical techniques, it's possible to predict how such transformations work in general cases, and to design a system to work the process backwards, so that, given a misspelled word, the system can guess what that word is most likely to be a misspelling of. Brill's question-answering system works in the same general way. Many question-and-answer pairs exist on the Web in the form of FAQs ("frequently asked questions"), and Dr. Brill trained his system using a million such pairs to create a model that, given a question, can work out various structures that the answer could take, and then to use those structures to generate search queries. The matching documents found on the Web are then scanned for possible answers to the question.

The Cat is back. After a hiatus of over 20 years, Yusuf "Cat Stevens" Islam is back with his first original song (as opposed to the voice-and-drum Islamic songs he did occasionally). Previously discussed here when he was deported from the US for allegedly being on a "terrorist watchlist", Islam has had a change of heart when it comes to playing the music he shunned for so long. "Music is a lady that I still love because she gives me the air that I breathe," he quotes from one of his old songs. "We need all sorts of nourishment. And music satisfies and nourishes the hunger within ourselves for connection and harmony. It's part of God's universe." His new song Indian Ocean is now available on iTunes, with all proceeds going to victims of the tsunami disaster.

And we thought it was just a load of Soviet propaganda: Buran was pretty sweet Well, no doubt a little bit of industrial espionage helped them in its design, but the Soviet Buran really was an impressive technological achievement and in many ways superior to the United States space shuttle. Of particular interest is the impressive technology the Soviet's developed for heavy-lift boosters. Does anyone know what's become of any of this, or know of any other interesting bits of Soviet -v- American space race trivia? This stuff always fascinates me. PHP developer wanted

PHP developer wanted 09/23/2004 01:38 PM

I’m looking for a PHP developer to work on contract for an upcoming project. The award of this contract is contingent on the the project in question actually getting started. While it’s highly probable that this project will come to pass, there’s a small chance that the contract will not be awarded to anyone.

You’ll be working some exciting stuff in an technology area that has been getting a fair amount of buzz recently. If you’ve always wanted to work on a project that’s well-known, this could be it.

You should be capable of rapid development of complex PHP modules and user interfaces using object orientation, PHP unit tests, and complete template abstraction. You should have a familiarity with the concepts behind Web services. Working knowledge of Perl and/or Python is desirable.

You’ll be involved in RDBMS design, optimization, and development; you must have strong knowledge of MySQL. You should have experience working with PEAR — specific knowledge of PEAR’s Auth and error handling classes is desired. You’ll be working with and extending existing code, some without robust documentation.

The ability to work quickly from conversations and loose specs is required. You should be security minded, have a strong attention to detail and comfortable working under strict time-constraints with little hand-holding. You should write code that is fast, portable, and is well-documented.

Applicant must display a proven track record of delivering projects on-time to specification. References are required and will be checked.

This is a contract position. You should be able to dedicate 20-30 hours a week for during the month of October to this project with at least half of that time during normal business hours (Pacific timezone). There is a chance of additional projects and perhaps full time employment if you are interested. You must be authorized to work in the United States. Applicants in Northern California are preferred, but if you’re good, it doesn’t matter where you live.

To apply, send an email to info AT kalsey.com with your resume in plain text format, your contract rate, an attached sample of 100-150 lines of your best PHP code, your availability for the next 90 days, and your level of interest in full-time employment.
