Allbritton has begun blogging from Iraq. He's the writer who raised
$13,000 last year from his blog readers to fund an indie-reporting
trip to Iraq during the war. His readers have asked him to go back,
and he raised another $11,000 in the last few months. He just arrived
in Baghdad, and has begun writing more of his excellent stuff --
slices of everyday life in one of the most fraught places on earth.
The first post describes the crazily harrowing landing you have to
endure when you fly into Baghdad, as the plane corkscrews down to
avoid shoulder-mounted missiles:"
After a normal flight, we went into a tight, corkscrew
dive that sent your stomach up into your throat and in the case
of two passengers, out their mouths and into their laps. Its a
vomit-comet experience. But if you like roller coasters in a sealed
container where you cant really see anything, its a lot of
fun. Just dont think about the very real threat of
shoulder-mounted SAMs.

How to Get Out of Iraq by
Peter GalbraithMuch of
what went wrong was avoidable. Focused on winning the political battle
to start a war, the Bush administration failed to anticipate the
postwar chaos in Iraq. Administration strategy seems to have been
based on a hope that Iraq's bureaucrats and police would simply
transfer their loyalty to the new authorities, and the country's
administration would continue to function. All experience in Iraq
suggested that the collapse of civil authority was the most likely
outcome, but there was no credible planning for this contingency. In
fact, the US effort to remake Iraq never recovered from its confused
start when it failed to prevent the looting of Baghdad in the early
days of the occupation. ""the war in Iraq is over, and we won""

AP: G.I. Joe Captured in Iraq!
02/05/2005 09:47 PMA little after noon on February 1, the Associated Press released a
news alert saying they'd found a photo on a message board
(ansarnet.ws, according to this AP article) along with a message that
foreigners had captured many American soldiers. Copies of the original
versions of the article are still floating around the 'net. A
couple of hours after releasing it, an advisory moved across the wire,
asking editors not to run AP Photo LON128, because of "questions being
raised about the image." As of the last version of the story I've
found (from around 4 p.m. EST), the AP is trying to not make a big
deal out of the fact they goofed ... big time. And yet the photo is so
G.I. Joe when you look at it the first time.

Bloggers in Iraq
Bloggers in Iraq
04/21/2004 10:06 AMA piece in today's USA Today about the growing weblog community -- in
Iraq.
Fadhil's blog, iraqthemodel.blogspot.com, tells of his life and the
lives of his two brothers. One brother also is a dentist, and the
other is a pediatrician. "We wanted to help bridge the gap, not just
between the U.S. and Iraq, but with the entire Islamic world," says
Ali Fadhil, 34, the pediatrician. "The media is always taking a look
at the bad stuff. We want to show the good progress in Iraq." The
brothers' blog is written with an unusually pro-American viewpoint,
especially coming from three Sunni Muslims. Sunnis — among them,
Saddam Hussein — dominated Iraq's majority Shiite Muslim population
before the war.
(...)There are about 30 Iraqi bloggers in Baghdad, plus a few other
blogs written by Iraqis abroad. Not all share the Fadhil brothers'
optimism. "You have your Fox TV. I am offering a counter response,"
says Faisa Jarrar, whose blog is critical of the U.S. occupation. Her
mixed Sunni-Shiite family began in December with a joint blog,
afamilyinbaghdad.blogspot.com. Now, each of Jarrar's three sons has
his own blog. Raed, 26, Jarrar's eldest, is studying in Jordan.
Khalid, 21, and Majid, 17, are in Baghdad.
"All of our efforts are more individual efforts, but we have one
common goal, to show the world what is really going on," Majid says.

The Bazaar in Iraq
The Bazaar in Iraq
03/23/2005 10:10 AMLA Times. Violence in Iraq. The
Bazaar's soup of
Guerrilla entrepreneurship,
gangs, and
primary loyalties at work.
Much of
the violence, officials say, is inspired by the ethnic, tribal and
religious rivalries that were held in check by Hussein's brutal rule,
and facilitated by a ready supply of firearms. That deadly combination
has let loose a wave of vengeance killings, tribal vendettas,
mercenary kidnappings and thievery.
Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff, echoed the police, saying Tuesday in Baghdad that
criminals-for-hire were playing a growing role in the
insurgency.
One such incident, the officer said, was the brazen killing of
11 workers and customers Feb. 11 at the Happiness
Bakery in New Baghdad, a working-class Shiite Muslim suburb on the
capital's east side. Investigators first suspected Sunni Muslim
insurgents the bakeries had images of Shiite clerics and
posters urging customers to vote in the Jan. 30 elections, and the
attack occurred just before Ashura, a major Shiite holiday.
Police changed their thinking when witnesses recognized
several killers as Shiites. Authorities now suspect a tribal vendetta.
They speculate that a gang may have been hired to commit the crime and
make it appear as though rebels were behind it.
Phillip Carter at Inteldump has some
good thinking on this...

04/20/2004 11:28 AMNo smoking gun in Iraq
No smoking gun in Iraq
02/01/2005 09:15 PMIn fact, there was no gun at all! In news that I'm sure surprised no
one, the US announced the search for weapons of mass destruction in
Iraq -- the justification for our pre-emptive invasion of that country
-- ended after two fruitless years. The New York Times opines in its
editorial Bulletin: No W.M.D. Found:
The search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq may have been one
of the greatest nonevents of the early 21st century, right up there
with the failure of the world's computers to crash at the end of the
last millennium. That Y2K scare at least brought us an updated
Internet. Fear of the nonexistent W.M.D. brought us a war.
No matter how the Administration spins it, the ends do not justify the
means. Lies, scare mongering, and faulty intelligence have no place in
a democracy, regardless of whether a democratic Iraq is the ultimate
outcome of the war.
This tactic has been so successful for President Bush that you can see
it being applied once again, now to Social Security and its current
'crisis' (though projections show benefits will be solvent until 2042,
see Democrat disputes Social Security 'crisis'). Americans, I beg of
you, in the words of Chuck D: Don't believe the hype!
