PCs out sick more than users

PCs out sick more than users 06/25/2004 08:37 AM
The average UK PC is rendered unusable for the equivalent of around nine working days every year because the owner is cleaning up spam or fighting viruses. This is two days a year more than the average UK worker takes off as sick leave, according to Yahoo. A survey of 2,500 UK e-mail users found that 70 percent of users had been infected by a virus in the past year and 42 percent say they found it less stressful fighting their way through rush-hour traffic than finding legitimate e-mails among the spam in their inboxes. Spam is a problem for all e-mail users but some companies are hit harder than others.

I guess I didn't take their privacy policy literally: 'Contacts are notified by a one-time e-mail notification about their inclusion in the Huminity network.' WTF?! Assume that when you install the program, the people in your contacts list will be notified with no further warning. Sick! Computers Make You Sick

Computers Make You Sick 09/09/2004 12:33 PM
Not feeling so good? Perhaps you should blame your computer. A new study says that three out of every four office workers have health problems because they're not properly trained to use their computer. The problems are pretty obvious: back problems, eyesight problems or headaches. As this becomes a bigger and bigger problem, the suggestion is that corporations need to be more proactive in training people on good computing and good ergonomics. Of course, none of this seems particularly new, and many companies already have ergonomics groups that make sure people are well set up to use their computer in a healthy manner. At some point, good computing practices and good ergonomics are going to be issues that people are trained in at an early age -- and not at the office. However, in the meantime, companies who want to protect their employees' eyes, back and head might want to do a better job ensuring good computing ergonomic practices.

How Many Sick Days Does Your Computer
Have?
06/23/2004 11:06 AM
A new study from Yahoo in the UK shows that the average British computer has nine "sick days", where the owner has to waste time fixing problems instead of being productive. Six of those nine days are due to dealing with spam, and the other three are from viruses. Once again, though, people are looking to their ISP to solve this problem, even if ISPs have been hesitant to do so. It's getting to the point, however, where ISPs that don't aggressively police their networks for spam, viruses and other malware may start losing customers to those that do.

"I think a message is being sent by both the school district and the district attorney that this behavior will not be tolerated," the teacher told the Associated Press. Link

Flick mosquitos or you could get sick

Flick mosquitos or you could get sick
and die
07/19/2004 01:32 AM
If you catch a mosquito feeding on you, you should flick it away rather than squashing it, lest you drive its infectious guts into your body.
The issue is reviewed in an article published this month in the New England Journal of Medicine that focuses on a 57-year-old Pennsylvania woman who died in 2002 of a fungal infection in her muscles called Brachiola algerae.

Doctors were puzzled because the fungus was thought to be found only in mosquitoes and other insects. But it's not found in mosquito saliva like West Nile virus and malaria, so a simple mosquito bite could not have caused the infection.

The article's authors concluded that the woman must have smashed a mosquito on her skin, smearing its body parts into the bite.

Fellow Yahoos, Apparently some of you have forgotten about our company's most excellent "sick days" policy. It basically states that there's no fixed number of sick days that you're allowed to use per year. You cannot accumulate sick days and they don't expire. Instead, when you're sick or have a medical obligation, you stay home or otherwise deal with it. The logical consequence of this policy, I thought, was quite simple--easy enough for a 5 year old to grasp. But...

Creative Zen Touch Shipping This Month 06/10/2004 09:52 AM

creativezentouchsmall.jpg imageYou know how we were saying Creative's new Zen Touch hard disk player (the one with the killer 24-hour battery life) was coming out this fall? Greg Anderson found this press release on Creative's site that said it was coming out this month. I'm not a professional dateist or anything (although I did take two semesters of Monthology), but I'm fairly sure that this month is sooner than fall.

The 20GB version is pre-selling for $270, so I'd expect to see the 40GB model for around $75 or so more. Of course in my magical land where you can announce upgrades to unreleased products, I would let people pay for their MP3 players with sugarplums.

But There's No Water in Phoenix...

But There's No Water in Phoenix... 04/07/2005 09:28 AM

La Vida Robot: My buddy Matt tipped me off to these kids. They built an underwater robot that whipped a team from M.I.T. in the Marine Advanced Technology Underwater ROV CHampionship. Not only are they in high school, but they're undocumented immigrants to boot. As such, they couldn't qualify for the financial aid to even attend a place like M.I.T.

Across campus, in a second-floor windowless room, four students huddle around an odd, 3-foot-tall frame constructed of PVC pipe. They have equipped it with propellers, cameras, lights, a laser, depth detectors, pumps, an underwater microphone, and an articulated pincer. At the top sits a black, waterproof briefcase containing a nest of hacked processors, minuscule fans, and LEDs. It's a cheap but astoundingly functional underwater robot capable of recording sonar pings and retrieving objects 50 feet below the surface.

The four teenagers who built it are all undocumented Mexican immigrants who came to this country through tunnels or hidden in the backseats of cars. They live in sheds and rooms without electricity. But over three days last summer, these kids from the desert proved they are among the smartest young underwater engineers in the country.

Stinky ROV from Phoenix Takes on MIT

Stinky ROV from Phoenix Takes on MIT 03/29/2005 02:59 PM
There's an entertaining new Wired article about a team of four Mexican immigrants from a Phoenix High School taking on MIT and other top schools in the recent MATE ROV contest. Their ROV, named Stinky, was hacked together from PVC pipe and other off-the-shelf parts. Their unconventional design combined with some last minute help from feminine hygiene products resulted in a favorable showing compared to robots entered by leading Universities. Stinky ended up with the design award and the team received a special achievement award in addition to being declared the overall winner of the competition. Their story inspired the Phoenix Union High School District to create the La Vida Robot scholarship fund to benefit the further education of the four team members: Cristian Arcega, Lorenzo Santillan, Luis Aranda, and Oscar Vazquez. More photos are available on the team's website, as is a technical report (PDF format) describing their ROV.

Just One
12/18/2002 07:04 AM
Here's a Nice Mozilla / Phoenix Trick: Just One Here's a nice trick for web developers. Its not rocket science at all but its certainly helpful. All (well at least folks like me) of us have too many browsers open. This makes it hard to know which browser is open to a Blog, which browser is open to Slashdot and which one has the web application you're working on. What I do is save Internet Explorer for blogging and content I'm reading / researching, Mozilla for development tools like PhpMyAdmin and Phoenix for what I'm testing. This makes my ALT+TAB switching between windows very easy -- I just look for that one icon for what I'm testing or the tool I need instead of trying to "Step right up. Pick an Internet Explorer icon and you have a 1 in 10 shot of getting the right one". (Replace 10 w/ the average number of IE windows you have). Note: This could also be very useful on OS-X where the implementation of ALT+TAB is brain damaged. At least brain damaged in my opinion. I suspect Jeremy who has vented on this same topic would like this trick. Just three browsers and you can always ALT+TAB directly to at least one or two of them.
