The Konfabulator Controversy
06/30/2004 10:45 PMinessential.com:
Weblog: What should Apple do?: There's a bit of a controversy
brewing in Macland about the WWDC
conference and the Konfabulator knockoff Apple
introduced called Dashboard.
The theory is that Apple saw a great third-party app that people
loved, and decided it needed to be part of the OS itself.
Apple can’t do everything — they need other
developers to make software for OS X too. What concerns me is the
message the Dashboard thing sends. It goes like this, "If you come up
with a good idea and develop a successful product, we might copy it
and bundle it for free with the OS."
The Konfabulator folks, for their part, are having some fun with
it, poking fun of the posters that poked fun at Microsoft with a
banner on
their site that says, "Cupertino [where Apple is based], start your
photocopiers!"
Konfabulator was apparently written by some ex-Apple employes, and
they had this to say:
Regarding the conspiracy theory about Konsposé and prior
knowledge of Dashboard, here's the scoop. We knew Dashboard was
coming, and we'd been told by *many* people that it was being
developed as a "Konfabulator Killer". We never knew the specifics of
it other than it was rumored to be the exact same thing as
Konfabulator integrated at the system level. We didn't know that it
was going to be touted as part of Exposé, and we didn't know that
their format was going to be closer to a web page than a structured
XML file.
The threat of having the OS subsume your original work is a threat
Windows developers have lived with for years. I've always wondered
what happened to WinZip and PKZip sales
when Windows XP was introduced with integrated zip
functionality.

looking at prevention of cancer, had 2.5 times the number of serious
cardiovascular events compared to placebo. Curiously, another ongoing
trial looking at cancer prevention has not shown the same risk
increase, possibly in part due to the higher doses (400-800 mg/day

e Madness: Dean
over at blogs4God presents a really good wrap-up of the furor over the
new Movable Type release.
Unbeknowst to me, Six Apart
made a change over the weekend to say that mutiple Weblogs in MT
used to create one site (for instance, if you have another blog to
handle static pages for your site), do not count towards the Weblog
limit in the license. They also removed a single CPU restriction that
they said was in there by mistake, are allowing you to purchase
additional blog/author packs for $10 each, and have increased the
number of authors allowed in the mid-level version from 3 to 5.
Don Park links to some good
resources as well, including this very wise
column by Timothy Appnel over at O'Reilly:
As a developer and one who makes a living writing code,
this reaction to Six Apart's new licensing is really disheartening and
on a certain level frustrating to see. I am a firm believer and backer
of free software. [...] I've personally released quite a bit of open
source code myself and will continue to do so. However this apparent
expectation of the vocal part of community that it is their right to
have all great works of software at no cost is bothersome. If users
don't have the funds or won't pay on principle for my time, effort or
talent – how do I eat?
He makes a good point. Not everything in the world can be free, as
much as we would like it. Yes, I love free software, but I also know
when stuff is worth paying for. I'm reminded about what Nick Bradbury wrote in the pre-release FAQ to FeedDemon:
Will FeedDemon be free? Will it be open source? Sorry,
no. I have nothing against open source, but I also have two kids to
feed :)
I personally don't have a problem with Six Apart charging for this
version. Movable Type was a gift so far, and I guess I never expected
it to be free forever. I think they could have priced it a little
lower, but it's still worth it.

S.D. Library Web Site Controversy
S.D. Library Web Site Controversy
07/13/2004 03:44 PMS.D. governor pulls plug on part of library Web
site: Our governor, Mike Rounds, ordered some links removed from
the youth section of the South Dakota State Library Web
site this week because they linked to "inappropriate content."
The governor's office isn't identifying the links, but sources say
they were links to Planned Parenthood.
It's not censorship, Rounds said, because people can still
see the content by going directly to the sites. Others will have to
wait until state officials decide whether the sites are appropriate to
be linked from a state page, he said.
People are upset.
"The governor is not the master father of the state of
South Dakota," said Judith Krug, director of the American Library
Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom. "At least I don't think
he was elected on that basis."
I saw a group of people protesting outside the public library in
downtown Sioux Falls yesterday. At the time, I didn't know what they
were asking people to honk for. I didn't honk, just in case the signs
read, "Honk if you're an eff-ing moron." That's happened to me once
before.

Google's Overblown Froogle Controversy
Google's Overblown Froogle Controversy
06/09/2004 01:16 AMIt looks like some folks are making a big deal out of the fact that
Google searches on certain terms put
links to the
Froogle comparison shopping engine at the top of the results list.
It's unclear why this is suddenly an issue - as they've been doing
this ever since they relaunched their site a few months ago. The
links are pretty clearly separate from the actual search results
(though, not as separate as the regular ads) and are mostly designed
to take a guess at whether or not the user meant to search in Froogle.
They do the same thing with Google News. If the search term recently
appeared in a news story, they'll throw the Google News link at the
top as well. This seems more helpful than "evil" as the article
suggests.

Do Web Search Engines Suppress

Do Web Search Engines Suppress
Controversy?
01/09/2004 09:55 PMDo Web Search Engines Suppress Controversy? by Susan L.
Gerharthttp://firstmon
day.org/issues/issue9_1/gerhart/Web behavior depends
upon three interlocking communities: (1) authors whose Web pages link
to other pages; (2) search engines indexing and ranking those pages;
and (3) information seekers whose queries and surfing reward authors
and support search engines. Systematic suppression of controversial
topics would indicate a flaw in the Web’s ideology of openness and
informativeness. This paper explores search engines’ bias by asking:
Is a specific well–known controversy revealed in a simple search?
Experimental topics include: distance learning, Albert Einstein, St.
John’s Wort, female astronauts, and Belize. The experiments suggest
simple queries tend to overly present the "sunny side" of these
topics, with minimal controversy. A more "Objective Web" is analyzed
where: (a) Web page authors adopt research citation practices; (b)
search engines balance organizational and analytic content; and, (c)
searchers practice more wary multi–searching.
