Welcome Wedge worshippers! In today's Jedi Journal update, we focus on the first four issues of the monthly Dark Horse comic, X-Wing Rogue Squadron, "The Rebel Opposition". Not appearing in any trade paperback, this will be your best chance to see what those pesky Rogues are up to, short of securing the original issues. A big thanks to Crazy Chris Holoka for adding a lucious link to Jedi Journals in the magnificently manicured menu at the top of the page. Lock those s-foils in attack position and blast on in!

DRM Locks Out Library Patrons?

DRM Locks Out Library Patrons? 12/26/2004 11:03 PM

DRM at Its Worst? Here's a Prime Example

"DRM is actually a part of Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system and has been for a while, but it wasn’t until I picked up a DVD recently that I witnessed the ugly and very user unfriendly side of DRM in person. The DVD in question, T2: Extreme DVD, produced by Artisan Home Entertainment Inc., is a two-dvd disk set, which holds a digitally optimized version of the T2 movie on one disk, and a high definition version of the same movie on the second disk, encoded in WMV9 format....

Unfortunately, after trying to play the DVD back with Windows Media Player 9, I couldn’t get it to work. For some reason I needed to install a 3rd party application, InterActual Player, that was required to play back the content. I was a bit surprised as to why I needed to install InterActual Player as it clearly says Windows Media Player 9 on the cover. Why can’t I simply play the content back without having to install yet another application? But then it became quickly apparent that I did not only have to install and download an update for the InterActual Player over the internet in order to facilitate playback, but would also need to acquire a license. So obviously the WMV9 content on the DVD was protected by DRM and could only be unlocked after connecting to the license server to obtain a license, which it failed to do. I was surprised to find that it failed to give me a license as it had determined that my physical location was not in the US or Canada. Apparently the content was only to be played back in either one of these countries and nowhere else. After routing my IP address through an anonymous proxy server in the US I however managed to unlock the content just as well and was presented with a license agreement I had to agree to prior to being able to play the content back.

That agreement, amongst other things, stated that I could only play back the content for a period of five days, on the computer I installed the InterActual Player application onto, after which I had to re-acquire a license. To be honest that really pissed me off, I spent about an hour trying to play back a disc I legitimately bought and went as far as installing and updating a 3rd party application to my system that would allow me to do so, and now I’m only being given a temporary license, where’s my rights as a consumer?... Shame on you Artisan Home Entertainment Inc. and may this serve as a prime example of DRM at its worst." [Hardware Analysis, via Slashdot]

I wonder if any libraries bought this title. Unfortunately, looking in just my local catalog, SWAN, some did. I wonder how their patrons are faring trying to access these features. Would you go through all of that to watch a movie? I sure wouldn't.

Whatever did happen to fair use and the right of first sale in the digital world? I miss them.

China Locks Up VoIP Provider 07/08/2004 12:33 PM
If you thought that US VoIP providers were having trouble because everyone wants to regulate them, just look at the situation in China. A man who was accused of the crime of offering VoIP in China now faces five years in jail. The government is pissed off because they believe he "stole" approximately $1 million in phone call fees that would have gone straight to the government controlled phone monopolies. See how much easier it is to run an inefficient business when you're the government and you can just throw the best competitors in jail?

Glitch Locks Out Money Users

Glitch Locks Out Money Users 07/29/2004 11:58 PM
It's the end of the month--bill-paying time--and some Money 2004 users are wishing they'd kept their cash in an old mattress instead of relying on Microsoft's financial software. A snafu with a couple of Microsoft servers has frozen users' access to their own financial data, even though the encrypted files are on the hard drives of their own PCs.

Microsoft officials acknowledge the ongoing problem, which began Monday, and say they hope to have it fixed by midday Friday. Meanwhile, unable to view their budgets or pay their bills, many affected users are livid.

Angry Customers

"Clearly they screwed this up and have cost all of us time, and money!" says one user's post on Microsoft's Money Community Newsgroup.

Kenneth T. Van Wie, II, a computer consultant in Atlanta, agrees. "It is unacceptable that this could happen," he says. "While I have been inconvenienced by not being able to access my financial records, what about the small business that use this program for their day-to-day financial operations?"

Kensington security locks vulnerable?

Kensington security locks vulnerable? 08/09/2004 05:56 AM
According to Slashdot and Security.org, Kensington Locks are extremely vulnerable to very simple attack. With the most basic of tools costing less than $1, it's possible to unlock the device that offers 'security' to many thousands, if not millions, of laptop users worldwide.

Security.org report that using a bic pen and a pair of scissors, the protection from theft can be over come within 30 seconds. More worryingly, the procedure does not leave any damage to the cable / lock. As such, you would not be able to claim the $1500 that Kensington offer if a product is stolen whilst protected with one of its locks, due to the specifics of the guarantee.

So far, Kensington have not commented on the issue. One would suggest that you keep, as ever, a rather good eye on your laptop and any other products protected by their kit.

TiVo Upgrade Locks Up Hacked Boxes?

TiVo Upgrade Locks Up Hacked Boxes? 07/12/2004 08:52 AM

tivo_logo_thumb.gif imageMany people in the TivoCommunity.com forums who have hacked their TiVos to add additional hard disk space are finding that the latest firmware upgrade, 3.1.0c (which started hitting boxes about two weeks ago), is causing intermittent picture freezing and lock ups. These aren't people who have done anything crazy to their boxes necessarily, either; Many of them simply replaced dead, stock hard drives with new units. If you've had a similar problem, I'd head over there and try to work it out together. A group of concerned users working with TiVo will do a lot more to fix the problem than sending an email to me would (hint hint).

Kensington Cable Locks Easily Defeated
Says Security.org
08/09/2004 07:27 AM

KENSINGTON_2.jpg imageBearing in mind that Security.org usually wants to sell you a fix to the problems they talk about, they are warning users of some models of Kensington cable locks for notebook computers that the product can be easily defeated with a dollar's worth of common office supplies (the exact method isn't given). While that's sort of disappointing - and something Kensington should address, certainly - if you were leaving your laptop unattended in places where someone has even 30 seconds of time to try to fiddle with your locks, you're sort of asking for it anyway.

As many of the posters in the referring Slashdot thread say, notebook lock are like The Club. It's not that it secures your car; it's that it secures you car a little more than the next guy's.

03/22/2005 05:04 PM
Apple on Monday confirmed they have closed what's described as "a security hole" in the iTunes Music Store that allowed users to purchase songs without DRM attached. As a result of closing the hole, users of iTunes older than version 4.7 will need to upgrade in order to continue purchasing songs. This update also locks out users of PyMusique, a software application for Windows and Linux that served as an alternate interface to the iTunes Music Store.
